1 Achord is a talented collective of young people, which was formed in May of 2003. The group is made up of seven people, all of who embody different backgrounds and influences. 1 Achord's brand of urban/soul music takes from the many genres and artists that have influenced the band. As a band, 1 Achord is influenced musically and spiritually by all the bands that came before them and made great music such as Earth, Wind and Fire, The Whispers, Mint Condition, Tony Toni Tone' and the Roots. As for influences from individual artists, 1 Achord draws from the likes of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, and their many current soulful contemporaries such as D' Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill.
Within a month of their inception, 1 Achord began gigging on the east coast in venues such as New York City's Soul Cafe, Boston's M+M's Jazz Club and Hartford, CT's Sully's Pub, to name a few. Other engagments included hosting the spoken word open mic on Mondays at the Biarritz Lounge and community gigs for Streetpeace, which is an organization to stop youth violence in the urban community. Other community events include Willimantic's CT's Third Thursday Music and Arts Festival and various charity events. 1 Achord has also been featured at events for MBK Entertainment(Alicia Keys, Shawn Kane), Reebok, Inc., and the Cape Cod National Airport.
The band just recently returned from Washington, DC, where they made numerous live and radio appearances to rave review! 1 Achord is looking forward to engagments in Germany and the Dominican Republic, and a Maryland-D.C. area college tour in fall 'O5.
The Message of 1 Achord
The message of 1 Achord is one of Love, Postivism, and Unity through music. This message is put out over a background of organic beats, sweet, soulful chords, and true, raw vocals that tells stories and teach lessons about the everyday struggle of the mind and soul. 1 Achord uses all live instruments as well as write, arrange and produce all of their music.
