"A la Malibu: The Unbridled Spirit of 27 Miles"

A la Malibu: The Unbridled Spirit of 27 Miles
Published in Malibu Magazine July/August 2006

Without going into a detailed account of the last four decades of rock 'n' roll and the legends who shaped the music of today, let's just say that old-school rock 'n' roll has been recast into a new-school rock phenomenon that stays true to its roots and honors those who lived by their dreams and discovered that elusive pot of gold.

Heady notions abound, but the veritable reservoir of fantastic music from 27MILES, Malibu's homespun Southern rock band, founded by Kevin Solomon and Donny Kulp with Berry Oakley Jr. and Jody Kern, solidify a free and creative force all of its own.

"I wanted to start a Southern rock band for years," said Kulp, the band's viceral guitarist and songwriter. "I've played in Skynyrd and Hendrix cover bands before, but now I'm playing my own brand of music that I've always wanted to."

Melodic and mesmerizing, heavy and explosive, and with surprising emotional depth, each 27MILES' song tells a story.

Formerly called 454, the band originated five years ago after the tragic death of close friend Chris Williams, the legendary front man of the runaway epic Backbone69. Williams, the uncrowned musical leader of Malibu's bourgeoning rock scene, was a man who touched all deeply.

"We got together and started a band," said Solomon, the band's charismatic singer, songwriter, and guitarist. "I've played for years, but after Chris died, I started singing and taking it seriously. We wanted to carry on the tradition and make our own mark. We felt it from the inside out."

Kulp and Solomon envisioned an emotion-enriched band that combined blues, Southern rock and acoustic numbers that are set off with heavy choruses. They dropped their surfboards and gave selflessly to their dream.

The newfangled confidence fueled around-the-clock songwriting. This in turn created soul-stirring riffs and melodies that would become the band's signature sound. Its unique interplay runs from delicate and airy to dense and driving. Solomon's amazing guitar work coupled with Kulp's passionate style detonates and hypnotizes.

Like most bands, finding and retaining the right rhythm section is challenging. Fortunately, the original drummer and bass player have returned, and the band is as solid and uncompromising as ever.

Working musician Berry Oakley Jr., son of Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers Band, is anchored on bass. "I'm a vintage nut," Oakley said. "I've got a '60s Fender jazz bass and Ampeg SVT tube amp. The tone is more real with the old-school gear," Oakley explains, having toured with Robby Krieger of the Doors, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, the Allman Brothers, Marc Ford, and Backbone69, to name a few. "I enjoy playing with the extended family, and with 27MILES, I'm right back at home where I belong."

Local drummer Jody Kern, professionally trained at the Percussion Institute of Technology, brings to the mix his instincts and precision abilities, and compresses the band into a rollicking rhythmic juggernaut that is powerful, textured, unstoppable.

"It's amazing how life unfolds," Kern said. "Williams and I played together in the '80s in our band called Mutelage. He was one of the best guitar players I've ever worked with," Kern notes. "Back again wth the bosy, we're able to play with the freedom and creative license we've always hoped for."

Having remixed their latest EP with the ever-popular Brian Joseph Dobbs, producer/engineer for Metallica, Veruca Salt and Motley Crue, 27MILES is on a roll. CDs are available at Zuma Beach Video and their Web site, www.27milesmusic.com

The music world would not be complete without the brutally honest creative fire of 27 Miles. Was there a country crossroad in the dead of night with the Devil or one of his minions? We'll never know, but there's no need for an oversized rabbit's foot hoodoo charm, the unbridled spirit of four locals summoned their musical wonder and shows no sign of losing steam.

"Local Musicians Help Keep Southern Rock Close to Home"

The iron butterflies of rock and roll in the ’70s destroyed hotels, ravaged
America and sold billions
of albums. Tales of magic
and myth electrified the
revolution. The high-wire
balancing acts set the stan-
dard for wicked exuberance
and starshiploads of fun.
Many dreams come true,
and some have silver linings,
I live for my dreams and a
pocket full of gold—Led Zep-
pelin, “Over the Hills and Far
Away.”
A Malibu musician is a
propitious circumstance,
for the 27 miles of scenic
beauty is the epicenter of
a great burst of raw music
talent.
Old school rock has been
recast into a new school
rock phenomenon. A move-
ment’s afoot. Exploits are
toned down, diets are forti-
fied with wheatgrass and
ginger, and the music is as
explosive and fun as ever.
The band 27 Miles is
Malibu’s definitive South-
ern rock band. Founders
Kevin Solomon and Donny
Kulp, with Berry Oakley Jr.,
and Jody Kern, are shame-
lessly leading the pack of
troubadours. Melodic and
mesmerizing, heavy and
explosive, their music starts
at the top and doesn’t come
down. Songs are expressive
with surprising emotional
depth and lyrical imagery.
“I’ve wanted to start
a Southern rock project
for God only knows how
long,” said Kulp, the band’s
visceral guitarist and song-
writer. “I’ve played in Sky-
nyrd and Hendrix cover
bands for years. Now I’m
finally doing what I love to
do: write and play music.”
27 Miles, formerly 454,
formed four years ago after
the untimely death of Back-
bone frontman Chris Will-
iams. The guitar virtuoso
was the uncrowned fulcrum
of the musical renaissance.
Solomon, the band’s
gravel-voiced singer, song-
writer and guitarist with a
freewheeling gift of gab,
said, “After Chris died, I
started singing and taking it
seriously.”
Solomon and Kulp, both
self-taught ear musicians,
were inspired by Williams’
musical talents and genuine
friendship. They resolved
to keep the Southern rock
tradition alive in Malibu by
combining blues and classic
rock and roll with acous-
tic numbers that are set off
with heavy open choruses.
Their newfangled con-
fidence fueled around-thc-
clock songwriting and the
creation of soul-stirring riffs
and catchy melodies that
would become their signa-
ture sound. Their unique
interplay runs delicate and
airy, to dense and driving.
Solomon’s guitar work
is astonishing, while his
vocals run wild to tender
and unusually expressive.
Kulp’s signature licks can
be passionate, hypnotic, but
sometimes dark and daunt-
ing. Together they gel magi-
cally; songs are curiously
detailed, not unlike the rar-
efied fusion of combo leg-
ends Page and Plant, Len-
non and McCartney. “We’re
like yin and yang, we can’t
do without each other,”
Solomon said, laughing at
his animated British accent.
“We complete the circle.”
Like most bands, the duo
would go through drum-
mers and bass players like
Kleenex in a bad winter’s
cold. As it happens, they
found the ultimate team.
Working musician Berry
Oakley Jr., son of Berry
Oakley of the Allman
Brothers band, was anchor-
ed on bass. Oakley traded in
his skateboard for a guitar
at 13. “I’m a vintage nut.
I’m a stickler for old school
stuff,” Oakley said.
“I’ve got a ’60s Fender
jazz bass and Ampeg SVT
tube amp. The tone is more
real with the old verses
new,” Oakley explains, hav-
ing toured with the Robby
Krieger Band of the Doors,
the Jam Band Circuit with
Blue Floyd, Chuck Negron
of Three Dog Night and, of
course, the Allman Broth-
ers, Marc Ford, Backbone
and others.
Drummer Jody Kern was
schooled at the Percussion
Institute Technology. “My
number one influence is
Lucky Lehrer from the Cir-
cle Jerks. We met and talked
drums,” Kern said. “I was
so busy working and didn’t
have the time or money to
go into the studio,” Kern
remarked about recording
with 27 Miles’ first album.
“But Kevin was so excited
and overflowing with enthu-
siasm, I couldn’t pass it up.”
27 Miles just finished
mastering its first 11-song
album at J.T. Meskiel’s
Document Room Recording
Studio in Malibu, produc-
can stifle creativity.
The all-day and all-night
practice sessions sum-
moned the group’s dynam-
ic to the surface. “Once we
got in there, we saw the
level of where we wanted
to take it,” Kulp said.
“So we stayed longer.
The album takes you on a
journey and covers a lot
of different angles. It’s
organic. There’s a balance
between light and dark,” he
added.
Solomon notes judicious-
ly: “There’s a point where
you’ve got to let go and
allow the music to take over
without losing touch of what
it’s really about,” then adds,
“Otherwise the music might
get away from you. It’s not
suppose to be perfect. Rock
and roll is an art.”
Featured guest artists
include iconic guitar work
from Dean Deleo of Stone
Temple Pilots and Duane
Betts, son of Dicky Betts of
Allman Brothers, and back-
ing vocals by the angelic
Lea Felder, daughter of Don
Felder of the Eagles.
“I cherish kinship
between musicians,” Deleo
said. “Like so many of us,
music is a nice place to dip
our minds. When Kevin
asked me to come down
and play on the 27 Miles
record, I was flattered. I dig
the songs and their playing.
Honestly, Kevin or Donny
could have mustered up
anything I played. They are
both great players. They
were recording at the Docu-
ment Room, where I had
done some stuff for Chi-
cago’s 30th album,” noted Deleo.
By using alternat tunings with
no-holds-barred showmanship, 27 Miles
creates a rich and vibrant
show reminiscent of Zeppe-
lin, Skynyrd and Stevie Ray
Vaughn.
Heavy choruses explode,
wailing harmonies soar and
theatrically staged, back-to-
back guitar solos are part of
the act. “Hendrix played a
half-step down,” Solomon
said. “Then I’ll drop my
low E a full step to drop D
tuning. That’s when it starts
to get under the skin.”
“My live setup is fairly
simple,” Kulp said. “I play
through a Marshall Vintage
800 head with a 1969 cabi-
net and a few pedals.”
Currently shooting a
music video and writing
new music, 27 Miles can be
found playing locally at the
Dume Room and, of course,
in Hollywood. Their songs
can be heard on soundtrack
videos for Slednecks snow-
mobiling capers, Crusty
Demons motorcycle romps,
and in an HBO motion pic-
ture in post production.
Gigs, merchandise and
rehearsals are the daily regi-
men. “Music comes first,”
Solomon said. “Jewelry and
clothing are secondary.”
“This is it,” Kulp said.
“I’m finally doing exactly
what I want to be doing.
We’ve got the dream band.”
27 Miles is a band keep-
ing it real by staying true
to who they are, honoring
those who paved the way
before them, and bringing
home their own Southern
rock thunder.

"SOUTHERN ROCK IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA"

“27MILES is a four-piece original southern rock band spawned within the great outburst of raw musical talent from the burgeoning Malibu music scene. Their unique sound and a philosophy to "keep it real by staying true to who they are and honoring those that paved the way before them", come together to create unique and timeless music.

Formerly Malibu's popular band 454, 27MILES features the rarefied combination of its original co-founders: singer, songwriter and guitarist Kevin Solomon, a.k.a. "SOLLY" and songwriter and guitarist Donny Kulp. Front man SOLLY brings masterfully adept guitar work, a powerful, emotion-eliciting gravel voice and gift of gab personality; paired with Kulp's prolific songwriting abilities and visceral and passionately explosive guitar expertise.

As their sound developed and the songs began to come together for their debut album, they brought in British songwriter/producer Daniel Wills (Son of Rick Wills – Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Bad Company) to help finish some ideas and come up with a few songs to complete the album. As a trio these three are a force to be reckoned with. All understanding what the end result must be, timeless classics! "I knew just by the way these guys looked and played, and the fact that they were named after a muscle car engine, we would come up with some great stuff. I have never had as much fun working and writing with a band than these guys! They are truly the next classic rock band of our generation and they continue to aspire to live the dream!" says Wills. Daniel introduced the band to Producer/Engineer Brian Dobbs (Metallica, Motlëy Cru, Echo Brain, Man Made God), who would be the right man for the job to mix the band’s recorded tracks for their 2006 release 'Bringin' It Back'.

Kulp and Solomon launched 27MILES envisioning "the greatest rock band ever" that truly reflected their influences from the great 70s bands such as Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix, retooled and recast in their own style. By combining blues, southern rock and acoustic numbers that are melodic and mesmerizing, set off with heavy choruses, a highly combustible bloodletting is eminent and guaranteed to entertain.

27MILES brought in professional musician Berry Oakley Jr. on bass, (son of Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers). Oakley is a vintage nut who tours with The Robby Krieger Band of the Doors, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night and the Allman Brothers among others. Oakley's approach and abilities are extraordinary, spontaneous and world class.

The final role was filled by drummer Joseph Kern. Jody is an accomplished percussionist who graduated from the Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA where he blew away everyone in his jazz class with his creative and dynamic drum solos. It was there that he rounded out his drumming education. Throughout his career Jody has played with bands such as Malibu’s own Last Call, Venice’s The Degenerates, former Posh Boy and Fearless Records band Glue Gun in which he did two US tours. Jody is proud to announce rejoining with his old friends "from way back", and can be heard on their debut release, "Bringin' It Back".

27MILES finished mastering their 11-song album at J.T. Meskiel’s Document Room Recording Studio in Malibu in April 2006. "27 Miles are a great bunch of guys," said J.T. "They brought their A-Game and were very focused and disciplined, producing a remarkable album they so richly deserve."

27MILES "Bringin' It Back" is available for purchase online at www.27milesmusic.com, www.myspace.com/27miles and iTunes.

Featured guest artists include iconic guitar from Dean Deleo of STP on the songs, "Where I Belong" and "Lessons Learned", Duane Betts, son of Dickie Betts of the Allman Brothers on the song, "Brotherhood" and Vocals by Angelic Leah Felder, daughter of Don Felder of the Eagles on the song, "Life Unknown"

"I cherish kinship between musicians", Deleo said. "Like so many of us, music is a nice place to dip our minds. When Kevin asked me to come down and play on the 27MILES record, I was flattered. I dig the songs and their playing. Honestly, Kevin or Donny could have mustered up anything I played. They are both great players. They were recording at the Document Room where I had done some stuff for Chicago’s 30th album", noted Deleo. "If I can find any reason not to go south of Cross Creek I will. J.T.'s studio is the greatest, like water in the desert, state-of-the-art man. J.T. makes the time spent there quite easy and enjoyable as well as keeping us close to home."

The 27MILES interplay runs delicate and airy to dense and driving. Together they gel magically and soulfully creating a melodic and mesmerizing signature sound that plays heavy and explosive with a sophisticated integration of accompaniments, harmonies and an unstoppable rhythmic juggernaut: a single, powerful and textured sound.”

"Malibu’s 27MILES: Southern Rock Revolution"

by Kriss Perras Running Waters

| 27MILES blends Southern rock, Heavy Metal, Country, Jazz, R&B and gospel back-up vocals on a few tracks, into a tight ensemble sound on their debut album Bringin’ It Back. There is no fight to be center stage with their sound. These down to earth musicians have been around the Los Angeles music scene long enough to know ego doesn’t pay. They passed by the usual rock band material life flash for a clean Southern Rock band sound, including the great vocal harmonies. Despite no major label yet, although they are “looking for the right one that doesn't make us a deal with the Devil,” 27MILES has established a substantial following the old fashioned way, through combustible live performances at proving grounds like The Viper Room, The World Famous Malibu Inn and the Legendary Dume Room which closed in December 2006.

KRISS: Tell me a little history on 454, when was it formed?

SOLLY: We formed in October 2001, 2 months after the death of our inspirational musical mentor Chris Williams of Backbone69. We wanted to continue on were Backbone left off following his death. Donny came to me with some amazing song ideas and we got together and completed all the songs you heard on 27MILES Bringin It Back. What really was amazing was the fact that I did not sing or even consider singing before 454/27MILES was formed. Donny had some lyrics early on, and I just felt compelled to sing. Donny was like wow you sound great Kev, other people seem to like my voice too, and that's when my singing began in October 2001.

KRISS: why did you break up/stop?

SOLLY: We didn't break up, just changed the name to 27MILES in June 2005 due to legalities, plus 27MILES has more meaning to us, due to the fact Donny, Jodi and I grew up in Malibu together since grade school. Berry we met later on around 1998 when he joined Backbone.

KRISS: And the original band 454 was the same members as 27MILES?

SOLLY: No just Donny and I. The Og 454 was Alex Orbison, "formerly of Backbone69 and Whitestarr" on drums and Jesse Fishman, presently in Local Metal band "2 Cents", on bass.

KRISS: The title is Bringin' It Back because you brought all the original members back from 454 in addition to staying true to your roots? What is the idea totally behind the title?

SOLLY: Exactly like you said above, but mainly bringin back Rock N Roll the way it was meant to be played with heart n soul through life experiences.

KRISS: Who are the female vocals on back-up and the solo on Track 11? They are fantastic!

SOLLY: The female vocals on back-up are Natalie Coles back-up singers Valerie Pinkston and Sandy Simmons, and they were amazing in the studio. On Track 11 "Life Unknown" is Malibu local, Lea Felder, daughter of Don Felder of The Eagles, she’s also the singer in the local band Big Dume.

KRISS: Who have you and Donny sat in/played with, because I’m sure your list is longer than the bio provided.

SOLLY: To be honest with you, we've haven't sat in with that many big time players except Dean Deleo of STP when he came into the studio to throw down those solos on Where I belong and Lessons Learned. Oh yeah, I jammed with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols once back in like 1996. Also, Duane Betts, son of Dicky Betts, is a good friend of ours who sits in with us from time to time. He's also on the CD track 1 Brotherhood. Alex Orbison, son of Roy Orbison, used to play drums for us when we were 454 back in 2002. He was also the drummer for Backbone and Whitestarr. Cisco Adler (Whitestarr) has jumped up on stage and sang with me a few times at The Malibu Inn around 2003-2005. Actually I did an on-air radio interview in October 07. FM 97.1 Frosty, Heidi N Frank Show. Here's the link, check it out. We killed it http://podcast.971freefm.com/klsx1/724979.mp3. Also we do have a booking Management team working on tour dates. TNT Booking and Management. We are also being played on FM radio sporadically all over the USA and on many sites all over the internet.

KRISS: When did each of you begin playing music and where?

SOLLY: I started playing guitar in 1986 in my bedroom in Malibu on Busch Dr. I started playing because of Chris Williams, he blew me away with his skills on guitar. I was like wow, I’ve got learn how to do that it, it was so fuckin cool. It toke my breath away. Donny started playing after he saw me and Chris jamming together around 87. Donny lived in Malibu West at the time, and we were best friends. He was totally stoked on the whole thing to. We use to play a lot Hendrix, Metallica and Slayer together. We were full on metal heads for a long time, until we became more open minded and skilled on guitar. In fact I left Malibu in 1989 to go to college in Colorado. I was pretty much a hard rock/metal guy in bands called "Axis", "Pink Sprinkler", "Velocic Rage", "Standard Issue" until 27MILES formed. 27MILES just felt right, more meaningful, soulful and compelling than all my past projects.

Solly’s voice is a cross between the gravel Southern Rock greats, James Hetffield of Metallica and the powerful sounds of the 60’s Brits. Add in the backdrop, and at times in the forefront, the Gospel sounds of the female back-up vocals Natalie Coles back-up singers "Valerie Pinkston" and "Sandy Simmons", and the combination is explosive. The British rock invasion influencing their American Rock is ever present in the tight vocal harmonies of the track Brotherhood. Lost in the sounds of strong country rock-blues guitar and bass, it was a trip back to hear the blues sound being kept alive. The three rock ballads on this release (High, Travelin', Life Unknown) are a road trip to major hits of the 60’s and ‘70’s. 27MILES has a solid influence from the groundbreaking sounds of the early Los Angeles punk bands and self-proclaimed legendary influences from Led Zeppelin, Skynyrd, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Hendrix.

27MILES is part of the new rock revolution underground and includes all of 454’s original members. 27MILES is literally bringin’ back a revolution that is currently taking rock to its own distinctive American roots. No small surprise when these guys play around town with members of bands like Collective Soul, The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule, The Degenerates, Glue Gun, Bad Samaritans and the bass player Berry Oakley Jr.’s biggest influence, The Allman Brothers (he is the son of the Raymond Berry Oakley, founding bassist from The Allman Brothers). 27MILES is frontman vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Kevin “Solly” Solomon, prolific songwriter and guitarist Donny Kulp, Berry Oakley Jr. on Bass, and Jody Kern on Drums.

Berry Oakley Jr in 1992 joined Bloodline, featuring guitarist Waylon Krieger (son of Robby Krieger from the Doors), Erin Davis (son of Miles Davis), Lou Segreti and the highly talented Joe Bonamassa, who opened for BB King’s 80th birthday and voted Best Blues Guitarist by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. Oakely Jr. has toured with several bands including his godfather's band "RKB" (Robby Krieger of the Doors,) from 1991-2000.

Kern started playing drums at 11. Teaming up with Chris Williams, a talented and then up-and-coming local guitarist/vocalist and later to become a well known underground leader of the ever widening Malibu music scene. They went through an instrumental garage version of Metallica's "Disposable Heroes". After attending the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in Hollywood, Kerns got together with Williams to form the band Mutilage, Malibu's extreme metal power trio. Kern has played with bands such as Malibu's own Last Call, Venice's The Degenerates, former Posh Boy and Fearless Records band Glue Gun in which he did two US tours and recorded the album The Scene Is Not For Sale, Glue Gun's spin-off Unglued which at times included Louiche Mayorga (Suicidal Tendencies) and also Jim Cherry (Strung Out, Pulley, Zero Down) on bass, did session work with Jim Cherry, Soul Vibe featuring Donny Kulp of 27MILES on bass and the great Marc Palmer on guitar, Standard Issue with Kevin Solomon, also of 27MILES, and the Bad Samaritans, a maniac punk rock act from the San Fernando Valley. Kerns can be heard on their newest release, Regurgitate (2006) on Burning Tree Records.

You can check out the sounds of 27MILES at The Malibu Inn on Saturday April 12, 2008 at 10:00 pm. The band is also part of the headliners in the second annual Malipalooza this July at Bluffs Park.

27MILES brought in professional musician Berry Oakley Jr. on bass, (son of Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers). Oakley's approach and abilities are extraordinary, spontaneous and world class. Berry Oakley played on our album,"Bringin It Back" but is currently no longer with us. We now have Jason Benfield on bass. His bio is as follows:

Jason Benfield prefers his Gibson bass growl over the more jazzy fender bass sound. His biggest bass influences are the late great Allen Woody of the Allman Brothers Band & Govt. Mule and Jack Bruce of the Cream. "I love the dirtier thunder of Allen's Gibson basses and the crunch of Jack's playing. I would much rather see the bass player stand out than to hear a muffled bass tone in the background."

At an early age, JB was introduced to his brother Jon's large record collection and musical taste. "Jon, my bro, is a 'finger-pick style' bluegrass/blues guitarist. He had an amazing collection of bluegrass, blues and rock on vinyl growing up. I looked to my brother for musical direction and he was always happy to help me out."

JB picked up the bass @ age 13 and started practicing his blues/bluegrass progressions. "My brother and father were bluegrass musicians and they needed a bass player. I wanted to be in the band, so I picked up the bass. We played traditional bluegrass tunes mostly and spent a lot of time at local fiddlers conventions... My bro won second place @ Galax VA in the flatpicking competition. By the end of every convention my fingers would bleed from the large bass strings on my 17 year old hands."
