THEY CALL IT GARAGE COUNTRY - Fusing Southern Rock & Outlaw Country with Punk, Blues & Americana Roots, 29 MULES have a raw, soul-filled sound that gets the crowd on its feet!

Biography

“29 Mules are unabashedly ballsy and rowdy as f**k! They take their Texas roots seriously and their style is straight up country and ain’t scared of it, but they bring a californiacated and hard punching twist to it with the occasional infusion of rap inspired stylings.” –Eric Rasmussen FAR WEST ALMANAC

“These Mules don’t have many rules, but here’s one they live by: Country is meant to be played loud, fast and hard.” –Bill Locey VENTURA COUNTY STAR

“The union that’s been tearing up the L.A. rockabilly/psychobilly scene like a slow-moving twister through the plains, began as a funky blues-rock thing more than a decade ago. It is the symbiosis between Gonzalez’s shredding blues sensibility and Cannon’s multi-instrumental quickdraw plus clever, country boy charisma that give their sound the edge that separates them from the pack. Only fate could be responsible for such chemistry-- the result of which is balls-to-the-wall, boot-to-the-booty, hip-shakin’, rock solid, smart, sexy, badass country music. That’s not to say there isn’t the occasional sun-kissed ballad in the band’s 500-song repertoire, but inasmuch as a country band can genuinely rock — 29 Mules does.” –Michael Cicero VENTURA COUNTY REPORTER

“Hold on to your cowboy hats, you are in for a wild ride! (Mix a little) Texas Rock, Country, Blues, Psychobilly, a little theatrics, and you’ve got 29 Mules, one of the most versatile and exciting bands to hit the Los Angeles club scene in recent memory.” –Deborah Rose NATIONAL MUSIC EXAMINER

Songwriting duo, Casey Cannon & Xavier Gonzalez met in Los Angeles while working at Guitar Center and instantly connected upon discovering they both had roots in Texas and the wilds of the Mojave Desert.  They grew up listening to Waylon, Willie and Johnny Cash, and after playing around in the rock and punk scenes, they drifted back to their roots. The boys cooked up a swampy new sound and the 29 MULES were born kicking & screaming into the L.A. Country scene.

Casey & Xavier are the heart & soul of the band while the many All Stars that make up their rhythm section keep their music always pumping with originality. The usual All Stars include: legendary drummer David Raven (Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Carlene Carter), bassists Johnny G. (Slash, Carole King) or Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings) & Dave (Hillside) Spangler on Harmonica. The 29 Mules have broken genre boundaries and have gained a global following.

They have made a major contribution bringing Country back to the Southern California scene with their popular Wednesday night hootenannies at Ireland’s 32 in the San Fernando Valley. From corporate shows to Texas honky tonks, the 29 MULES always leave the crowd hollerin’ for more!

The band has toured with Stoney LaRue, and have shared bills across the West with Ryan Bingham, Robert Earl Keen, Hank Williams III, Bruce Robison, Asleep at the Wheel, Delbert McClinton, Shooter Jennings, Stonehoney, Southern Culture on the Skids, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Throw Rag, Guana Batz, Drive-By-Truckers, Anne McCue & many others.

Written By: Casey Cannon

Slow down you old caballero
Slow down my only true love
Cause I've caught the smell
Of that old dog whiskey
He's comin to steal your soul

Stopped Drinking Whiskey

Written By: Casey Cannon

I been beat up
Been knocked down
Got my teeth broke out
I been throwed around
Well, if y'all wonder why
I gonna tell y'all why
Why I stopped drinkin' whiskey

Devil Stole My Last $10

Written By: Casey Cannon

The devil stole my last ten dollars
Last night as I covered up my pain
It don't really matter
Cause everything means nothing anyway
I hate the world and it hates me
And I don't need your rotten company
Listen close as I scream
Cause you won't hear anything I say

California

Written By: Cannon, Gonzalez & Spangler

California
My Home
At least for now

California's the place you oughta be
So move up on down to Beverly
Beverly the Hills that is
So bring yer wife bring all yer little kids

Lowdown

Written By: Cannon, Gonzalez & Spangler

Broke and wonderin’ where my world went wrong
Ain’t nobody care when you got it all
There ain’t no where to fall when you’re
Low down

Mama didn’t need me, papa ain’t around
I learned to stay alive by staying underground
There ain’t no where to fall when you’re
Low down

Traveled long and far tryin’ to get home
Ain’t nobody care when you got it all
There ain’t no where to fall when you’re
Low down

Broke and wonderin, where my world went wrong
Ain’t nobody care, when you got it all
There ain’t no where to fall when you’re
Lowdown

Beat Down
Shot Down
Ashes to ashes
Like Johnny Cash is
Dust to dust we break it up
29 Mules break it up in disgust
We pull more shit than you can
We got gold from the mine shaft, bring it up man
Bring it up just like Big John did
Holdin’ up oaks and savin’ lives, kids
Like the miners, 49ers, bringin up gold gonna give y’all funky shiners
Cause we can kick it, we can kick it like you
Not 27, 28, 29 mules
Gonna give ya love & do you like you do
You gonna ride us and yeah be like pools
Gonna take you up, down, show you who the man is
Bring it up like the Grand Canyon, bitch
I been 6 feet
I been 8 feet
Still diggin’ up
Heart beatin’ in the ground
Heart still beatin’ underground
6 feet underground
Been beat down, shot down
Laid down, bloodied up, but I’m still around
Kickin’ up like a mule
Up from the shaft like 29 Mules
Bringin’ up like gold for you

Old Blind Dog

Written By: Casey Cannon

I realize I'm dirty
I confess my hair's a mess
This old blind dog's been sitting
On your front porch every mornin
Howling out let me in
Please let me in

I went to Southwest high
Kicked some ass at Benbrook lake
And drank that bourbon dry

Get Behind the Mule

Written By: Waits/Brennan

Molly be damned smote Jimmy the Harp
With a horrid little pistol and a lariat
She's goin to the bottom
And she's goin down the drain
Said she wasn't big enough to carry it

She got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow
She got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow
She got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow
She got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow

Choppity chop goes the axe in the woods
You gotta meet me by the fall down tree
Shovel of dirt upon a coffin lid
And I know they'll come lookin for me boys
And I know they'll come a-lookin for me

Got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow
Got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow
Got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow
Got to get behind the Mule
In the morning and plow

Big Jack Earl was 8'1
He stood in the road and he cried
He couldn't make her love him
Couldn't make her stay
But tell the good Lord that he tried
(Chorus)
Dusty trail from Atchison to Placerville
On the wreck of the Weaverville stage
Beaula fired on Beatty for a lemonade
I was stirring my brandy with a nail boys
Stirring my brandy with a nail
(Chorus)
Well the rampaging sons of the widow James
Jack the cutter and the pock marked kid
Had to stand naked at the bottom
Of the cross
And tell the good lord what they did
Tell the good lord what they did
(Chorus)
Punctuated birds on the power line
In a Studebaker with the Birdie Joe Joaks
I'm diggin all the way to China
With a silver spoon
While the hangman fumbles with the noose, boys
The hangman fumbles with the noose
