2nd Guess’D: Short Biography

One evening early in 2004, Warren Forster approached David Gillham and asked the seemingly strange question: “wanna start a band?” Without much hesitation 2nd Guess'D (although this did not become the band name until 2008) was started. The aim of the band was to attempt a Blink 182/Greenday punk rock band. The Founding members were Warren Forster on drums, David Gillham on lead Vocals, Devon Mckenzie on Rhythm guitar and Johan Van der Merwe on lead guitar and Robert Van der Schyff on Bass. After a few attempts of covers of the above mentioned band the guys soon realised that this style of music wasn’t for them, mostly because David was not able to sing very high, Warren could barely keep a beat and the rest of the band had as of yet not figured out how to tune their guitars.

Never the less the band persevered and changed playing many a drunken house party, losing battle of the bands every time they entered but most of all slowly but surely finding the beginnings of what would eventually become their unique sound.

Like something out of Darwin’s book, the band evolved, becoming tighter and gruffer, exchanging some aspects of their pop punk culture for more hardcore aspects, bringing in old school feel change, and even using heavy metal break downs. Over this period the band line up changed many times keeping only David and Warren as the corner stone of the band. Finally on one auspicious day, David met a crazy looking metal head guitarist named Julian Vosloo, who soon became the Bass guitarist for band now formally known as 2nd Guess’D. After attempting to play three piece for a while (David was now on guitar as well as vocals) the band decided that something was missing. That missing piece turned out to be Allan Lancaster, who’s old school shredding style, with influences from Led Zeplin through to Metallica, was the ideal choice for the band who was already fusing everything from pop punk to metal.

The band finally managed to hit the Johannesburg circuit in earnest. We played on the mainstage at Thornfest international music festival 2010, and have been confirmed for Thornfest 2011 in early Feb. We have played many other local festivals. The band has gigged with all of the headlining acts of the current era, from Fuzzigish and Hog Hoggidy Hog, to Knave and Chromium and with bands like Pestroy and Fokkoffpolisiekar and Van Coke Cartel we are capable of holding our own on any stage. This is as of yet only the beginning of what promises to be an amazing career for 2nd Guess’D, and the South African rock lovers will find it hard to ignore this band for much longer!

We believe that with your support we can conquor the world (eventually), we are serious about our band and we promise that you wont be dissapointed. We want to tour the world and spend the rest of our lives playing shows. We are hard working and young and have our entire lives to give.
