Qwill & 2 Tone are 2 Austin Rappers from the Die Slo label, which has been garnering a substantial amount of regional success & some national attention lately. The duo recently released a song featuring Trademark, which they're preparing to release a video for. D & D chopped it up with them briefly about the song. Look out for Beautiful Music 2 coming soon & the video will be dropping 2/15.

Do you think you would smoke more, less, or the same if weed was legal?
2Tone: Honestly I think I would initially smoke more for the simple fact that it would become more available, but in the end after a couple of weeks I believe I would smoke about the same. Hell, we already burning trees like they legal anyways.

Qwill: Smoking is just a habit so probably about the same. If weed was legal here in Texas I'd be plotting on opening my own dispensary to get paid

How did y'all working with Trademark come about?
2Tone: We honestly ran into him after a show of theirs (JETS) at a SXSW showcase for the Smoker's Club. After the show we ran into them in the street outside the venue, and just began chopping it up and joking around with them. Eventually one thing led to another and before we knew it, we were driving to where they were staying in Austin during SXSW to smoke and collab on a track.

Qwill: We met him during SXSW 2011 and got the opportunity to do some things a while after that. I was really a fan before we got the chance so I felt it was a blessing. Also just another step towards our ultimate goal of making our own name, gathering fans, respect nationally and eventually internationally as individual artists and for Die Slo Entertainment, Beautiful Music 2 coming soon to a speaker near you.

Qwill, why do you feel you came through the ashes? What did you mean by that?
When I say came through the ashes it means you haven't had a easy life. No silver spoons, no handouts. You know what the grind is, to work for what you have. You know what it's like to try and fail. Deal with hardship, adversity, and situations life might throw at you. That's my definition of coming from the ashes and that's what I've been able to do and will continue doing.

Boxed minds get swept often/Under the footsteps of monsters/ is a catchy statement. What are the characteristics of a boxed mind?
2Tone: A boxed mind, is someone who refuses to look at things from a different perspective than their own. And their arrogance & ignorance only puts a restraint and limitation on their potential. A closed mind if you will, one unable to think outside the box. - Drank & Dank

Around the streets of Austin, Texas I constantly hear people say there are no true hip hop artist. That there are no artists that use soul, blues and old school hip hop elements in their music. As I sit and listen to Beautiful Music 2, I'd have to disagree. As poetic words begin to be delivered among a melodic beat the soul of this album is evident from the start. Like many rappers 2 Tone vs Q Will were influenced by the music of their parents who listened to predominantly R&B and Soul. But where these guys separate from the crowd is where their understanding and level of musicality far surpasses that of your average rapper.

Raised together in Austin, 2 Tone vs Q Will are blood cousins who got their start on the Austin Hip-Hop scene with the popular albums Beautiful Music 1 & Beautiful Music 2.

“2 Tone is my blood cousin we grew up together as kids and we’ve been on a life journey together thats led us to music. Since we were kids as teenagers we we’ve been working together and we’ve always had a different sound,” Q Will explained.

“We are different than anything else I am hearing in Austin, we have that type of organic sound that is a little different and our live show is engaging. We really get the crowd involved so people really get to be a part of our music. We don’t want to settle and we challenge ourselves everyday in our music,” 2 Tone added.

Now as they prep for their full length album Vegetables & A Handful of Candy, the guys are back with a 5 song EP dubbed, Legacy that has a more worldly sound and appeals to all type of musical lovers from Jazz to Funk to Soul.

“You don’t have to like rap to listen to our music, there’s another layer to it with the Jazz, Funk and Soul and some of our verses are more like spoken word than raps with a cappellas . What we do is very Austin, our music represents the city and we amplify what you see here at SXSW, ” 2 Tone said of their new Legacy EP.

“We sat down and collectively built the songs from beginning to end, we wanted to make music that had a world sound and it ended up really pushing me to make different music. I really feel connected with this project,”

For their Legacy EP, the guys are focused on two singles “The Motivation” and “Legacy”

“‘The Motivation’ is more of an uplifting song and ‘Legacy’ is more about everything in today’s world being disposable and how everything comes and goes, and theres only a few select things in this world and in this life that are here forever,” Q Will said.

With this project the guys look to catapult themselves to the forefront of the Austin music scene, which has quickly developed a reputable sound.

“The past five years Austin’s sound is diverse and it’s about being different. We have Country Cousins, Chamothy, Kydd Jones and many others, but Austin is big on bands. Its a big city but its a small town, its very talented and when people outside of Austin take a look, they will realize it can blossom into its own thing”
