"New Local Release News"

Derek Stinson (guitars/vocals) and Mark Karapondo (bass) of local band Cletus Romp have started a new group with drummer Brian Moeller (also of The Hiders and Liquid Hologram) called 40lbs of Lye. Earlier in February, the trio released the first taste of its dark, swampy, soulful Rock with The Hillbilly Deathtrap Demos, a five-track EP available at most online digital retailers (it is available for free download on Amazon here). This spring, 40lbs of Lye has plans to record its debut full-length as a follow-up.

The band will celebrate the release of The Hillbilly Deathtrap Demos this Friday at the Woodward Theater (1404 Main St., Over-the-Rhine, woodwardtheater.com). The band is part of a triple bill that also includes local acts The Darkhearts and The Stealth Pastille. Tickets are $5 and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. For more on 40lbs of Lye, go to 40lbsoflye.com. - Cincinnati CityBeat

Bio

When starting this new project, 40lbs of LYE set out to write dark, no holds barred rock and roll. With that in mind, their debut EP “The Hillbilly Deathtrap Demos” was penned.  Thunderous drums layered with growling bass lines throw down a solid backbone for the guitar to build upon.  No flashy guitar solos, just grinding catchy grooves that you can’t help but move to.  The vocals add the final piece to the musical puzzle.  They ring through with the clarity and resonance of a church bell struck by a heavy bag of gravel.

As solid and compelling as the music is, where the EP really shines is in the lyrics.  This is where their focus on all things dark and strange come through.  The songs all revolve around concrete imagery and story lines.  Stories of murder, mayhem and mental illness that have a way of sticking with you like that one episode of the Twilight Zone that you saw as a kid that still pops into your head on occasion.

Formed in the summer of 2014, these veterans of the Cincinnati music scene got together just to see what would shake out.  They clicked immediately.  Derek Stinson is at the helm as guitar player and chief songwriter.  Mark Karapondo joins in on bass and Brian Moeller rounds out the 3 piece on drums.  Both Derek and Mark were with Cletus Romp for the past 10 years.  During that tenure they had moderate radio success domestically, but even more so internationally while signed to Out of the Box Records.  Brian, besides 40lbs of LYE, currently plays with the legendary Cincinnati group The Hiders as well as the increasingly popular electronica based Liquid Hologram.  All three members come from their own musical places, but have managed to merge into something haunting and uniquely Midwestern.

All the pieces snapped together and 40lbs of LYE delivered what they set out to.  “The Hillbilly Deathtrap Demos” is a foot stomping, devil be damned vision of what they believe rock and roll should be.  Give it a listen and revel in the oddness.
