42 Seconds Later: Rock And/Or Roll (EP)

Genre: Rock
Label: Independent

It's not too often that you hear something raw with this much class. I refer to 42 Seconds Later, a trio from Wisconsin that seems to take a lot of their influence from vintage bands as well as a little Mod/Punk.

The vocals are stunning ... Shari puts a lot of heart into what she's singing. I'm also impressed by the instrumental ability that shines through in her fat bass lines. The guitar is equally as fascinating in that very few effects are used to muck up the warm, crunchy sound brought out naturally by Matt's playing. The whole sound would be incomplete without Dave's almost tribal rhythms. As a whole this band meshes beautifully and certainly puts out the good stuff ... not just snakes and sparklers.

The Rock And/Or Roll EP had all the stops, stunts and illiterate BS removed ... leaving nothing but solid Rock and Roll to please the palette. I give 42 Seconds Later 4 out of 5 stars!

While many actually choose to move to the Inland Empire, there are probably just as many that circumstantially find themselves living out here. Matt and Shari Gugg, the married founders of rockers 42 Seconds Later, sorta split the difference on the aforementioned.

“We got to the I.E. kind of by luck and by accident,” says Matt, the act’s guitarist (the pair are actually Badger State natives). “We found a place to live online before we had moved or even been to California. We were just looking for nice places in or within roughly an hour of Hollywood, so that we could commute there and play shows. We didn’t realize how many cool clubs and bands were in the Inland Empire so we got the best of both worlds.”

Wife/bassist/vocalist Shari added that she’d always wanted to live in California since she was a child. “I believe in following our dreams and my biggest is to be a ‘rock star’ so to speak . . . But seriously, this is where dreams come true, isn’t it?”

Self-described as “classic rock with a middle finger” by Matt, the trio (with drummer Cory Chapman on board) fuses elements of rock, metal, pop and punk, without having to subscribe to a single genre. “No matter what, it’s always raw, guitar-based rock with a hook,” he adds.

42 Seconds Later have cast their lures across Southern California, hitting the Jam Bernardino festival with IE Weekly “Band of the Week” Sachi, the Orange County Fair and the Whisky. And relocating found the Guggs realizing their rock dreams, opening for heroes Joey Belladonna of Anthrax (“I grew up on classic Anthrax so this was a dream come true for me,” says Matt) and Steven Adler of Guns N’ Roses fame (now of Adler’s Appetite).

“They were amazing,” says Shari. “I never had the luck to see the old-school Guns N’ Roses in concert but this was damn close. They totally rocked and I got to meet Steven Adler and the band after the show. I’m a huge fan and I will always remember that!” (Waleed Rashidi)

"42 Seconds Later wins band of the month June 2010"

June Winner: 42 seconds later
Music Go Round® is proud to introduce the June B.O.M., 42 Seconds Later from San Bernadino, CA! This is guitar driven melodic rock. 42 Seconds Later is a 3 piece rock band based out of Southern California. The band got their start in Milwaukee, Wisconsin when guitarist Matt Gugg, looking to form a new band hooked up with bassist Shari Best. Disgusted with the current music scene both wanted to create something new, different and fun. After auditioning several singers with no luck Shari stepped up to take over the lead vocals herself and 42 Seconds Later began playing the club scene.

The band developed a strong following throughout the midwest with their catchy songs and electric stage performances. Eventually the band decided it was time to take things to the next level and relocated to Southern California. They have made their mark with amazing live performances at legendary Hollywood clubs such as The Whisky a Go Go, BB King's and On the Rox. 42 Seconds Later's sound is a unique blend of guitar driven melodic rock which makes you want to stomp your foot, pump for fist and sing along..... The songs are instantly recognizable and catchy as if you've known them forever, yet fresh and new unlike anything else in music today. The band has shared the stage with members of Guns n Roses, Anthrax, Pat Benatar Oingo Boingo, Adelita's Way and Suicidal tendencies. 42 Seconds Later recently released their second cd titled "Breakdown" The new cd was co-produced and engineered by Alien Ant Farm producer Phil O'keefe in Riverside California. Give Your life meaning and experience 42 Seconds.

I?ve always been fond of San Bernardino, a fairly unassuming city in its own right, for being the last place listed in the string of cities in ?Route 66?. It seems fitting that some good music should come out of there, which brings us to 42 Seconds Later. Everything about this band will remind you of something else, but in a way that reflects rich and well-employed knowledge rather than imitation.

The song ?Outta Time? kicks in with a Who-like start and then moves in to solid guitar and drum work. ?Rock and/or Roll? gets going with a crunchy arena-rock sound and delivers a nice anthemic refrain. The opening of ?Desperation? imparts a sense of creeping doom a la Black Sabbath, which the repetition of the guitar riff then builds on, getting truly frenzied toward the end before descending back into slow dread and the fade-out of feedback fuzz. Throughout these songs 42 Seconds Later produces a classic rock sound with a punk-like tightness, avoiding the sloppiness and self-indulgence that often characterize 70s rock.

My single complaint is that their vocals end up sounding thin on these songs, which I suspect owes more to production than any actual limitations of the vocalist. I would love to hear them live, which might well produce a more dynamic and emotive voice to match the music. Besides which, they cover ?Breakin? the Law?, which I have got to hear them play.
