Bio

Taking the bull by the horns and not settling for second best, was the reason 5 Way Addiction’s soon to be released debut album, PLAY LOUD, took so long to be created.

Early 2013 saw changes in the band lineup, and removing people who didn’t share the same vision, was first on the agenda. Founding members, Bobby Russell (Bass, 43, Mt Druitt) and Robert Carney (Rhythm and Slide Guitars, 49, Mt Druitt) who had played together in a band called ‘Total Karnage’, bought a lot of old riffs and songs collected from over the years and started to collaborate with the other founding member Garry Tomkins (Lead Guitar, 48, Mt Druitt).

They spent over 6 months holding auditions trying to find a solid tight drummer, and a no holds barred vocalist and front man, to complete the line up. Filling these positions comfortably was, Darren Mcgilvray (Drums, 44, Mt Druitt) and Paul ‘Spyda’ Whyte (Vocals, 52, Granville). Darren and Paul had also played in a band together previously.

For the next 12 months the members poured their blood, sweat and tears into creating the songs for the album, Play Loud. Their family lives took a back seat as they focused all their spare time, writing and fine tuning the songs.

The goal of this album was to be a dedication to the time they have all spent being addicted to Rock & Roll.

So to the meaning of the band name, 5 members, each members Addiction to Rock, 5 Way Addiction.

To give this album the best chance possible, they got the right people for the job.

At the helm, they where able to acquire the services of legendary Producer/Engineer, Steve James (worked with, The Screaming Jets, Sex Pistols, The Angels and Cold Chisel). His experience and guidance got the best out of the band, and it left a lasting impression on the 12 songs recorded.

Play Loud was recorded at A Sharp Studio, with Steve and Co Engineer Richard Lake. It was the first time these two, and 5 Way Addiction, had worked together, but by the end of the album they had become the 6th and 7th member’s of the band.

The album was mixed by Steve at Phat Majik Studio, in Byron Bay. The the album was sent down to Melbourne, to get it mastered by Australia’s best, Jack “The Bear” Mantz, at Jack ’The Bear’ Mastering, at Brunswick. The 8th member of the outfit.

5 Way Addiction and their debut album, Play Loud, was complete.

The songs off the album cover many genres but has one main element, and that is Rock. From the opening riff of, Mutha Rockers, to the ending Harp playing out the dying seconds of, Shot in the Dark, the journey you will experience will have you craving more. “All Killers, no Fillers” a quote by Jack The Bear .

With a mix of heavier, borderline metal songs, a rock balled and a blues song, the album has something for everyone. Unless you are a techno or a R&B fan, then you will be disappointed, unless it gets sampled into one of their crap songs, then you might like it.

The sound is raw, angry and relentless. Something that has been lost in a lot of so called Rock songs today.

It is unadulterated Rock and Roll. Roaring Marshall amps, beefy cranking Les Pauls, thumping Bass, pounding Drums and a singer that rips paint of the walls with his screams. Rock and Roll is not dead, its just been asleep, and it has taken these five guys from the western suburbs of Sydney, to rip it out of it’s slumber.

Play Loud, is 47 minutes of Old School Rock with a New Age Loathing, Disgust and Confusion.
