"Rhode Island cover band, 5 Flavor Discount, takes southern New Hampshire by storm"

Rhode Island cover band, 5 Flavor Discount, takes southern New Hampshire by storm

5 Flavor Discount doesn’t want to bore anyone. This four piece cover band from Providence, Rhode Island keeps its audiences focused on them all night. They have a visual aspect that cannot be overlooked. Two go-go dancers perform on stage with the band. The lead singer is an experienced emcee. And if that isn’t enough, their drummer is a woman, still an unusual sight in modern bands.

Singer Robin Soares said the stage show presentation was inspired by being bored by her previous band and turned off by seeing other bands simply not looking their best on stage. “Every time you turn around,” she said, “you see bands that are just four or five guys that are just standing there. In a lot of cases the stage is tattered and paint coming off the wall and rips in the rug or the floor and the guys in tee shirts and jeans just looking pretty sloppy. The music sounded OK, but there was no visual to the show.”

So everyone in 5 Flavor Discount wears costumes that would make Liberace jealous. This is especially true for their two go-go dancers Sara Jane and Capri. The dancers are especially entertaining. “It’s adds more of a spectacle to the stage show,” Soares said. “We don’t feel that they make the band, but they enhance the stage show. They do sometimes dance with members of the audience. Sometimes they hand out fliers during breaks. They’re cute girls in cute outfits, and they’re not hard on the eyes. Sometimes we have one or two, depending on the venue.”

Drummer Angela DeFazio makes for another interesting twist. “I think we get more attention because we have a girl drummer,” Soares said. “She’s easy on the eyes, and she’s as good if not better than the majority of male drummers I’ve played with, and I’ve played with a lot of drummers. I went seeking her out when I started the band.”

Songs from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s adorn their set list. “We all like so many different kinds of music. There’s no favorite. We do quite a bit of modern stuff from 2000 and on.” Playing songs by Duffy and The Pussycat Dolls as well as Aerosmith and Sly And The Family Stone allow them to play to 40 plus crowds as well as college audiences.

Soares is confident she can keep Whippersnappers of Londonderry, their next area stop, on her roster of rooms. “Whippersnappers is a 30-plus crowd but does have college students to people in their sixties. I like that the owner is a musician, and he sits in with us on the saxophone. It’s our home base away from home because we play there frequently now and people have come to know who we are and we see a lot of repeat faces when we come back. It’s just a homey atmosphere.”
Soares found Whippersnappers on a Google search. “I want to make sure we fit in so we do well and the club does well. It’s a business approach, but you have to have that if you want to set yourselves apart and go back to places again and again.
This makes the drive back and forth from Rhode Island seem worth it. The drive back is always shorter. It’s worth it to us. We don’t break the bank, but we have a good time and we enjoy it.” 5 Flavor also plays the Derryfield and Jillians in Manchester. “We did run into people at the Derryfield that had seen us at Whippersnappers before.”

Entertaining is second nature to Robin. She’s an experienced emcee, starting in a wedding band. “I’ve always been a ham and never shy. I had to jump into this with both feet. There’s a lot of banter during the show. We have contests sometimes. We make light of people’s birthdays. We call them up on stage. I ask them trivia questions. Sometimes at random I’ll call people up to demonstrate a dance.”

The band name 5 Flavor Discount is partly a play on the shoplifting expression “five finger discount” but it also represents that they play five genres of music: rock, funk, reggae, pop, and hip hop. Songs on their set list don’t usually get played by cover bands, like songs by the White Stripes, Parliament Funkadelic, Jamiroquai, and The Bangles.
“This is one of the things I took a big chance on when I started,” Soares explained. I wanted to do something that was different from what everybody else does. Here in Rhode Island, you go see a few different cover bands in a night, and you will hear all of the same music. I’ve done it. I’ve researched it.”
5 Flavor Discount will learn a song to try out in three different rooms with different demographics. If the song flopped in all three, they drop the song.
“The Parliament Funkadelic obviously is very danceable. People enjoy that. We get out flashing lights and all kinds of stuff pertinent to the old Parliament shows that contained a lot of the elaborate costumes and props on stage.”
Songs by Beck and The White Stripes are included because aside from being popular, they are also danceable. “It needs to stay high energy regardless of the genre,” she said.
Soares took all the chorus and jazz quartet courses in school. Guitarist Jon Hathaway was educated in Alaska and has taught music for 25 years. Bassist Steve Cafaro and drummer DeFazio both give lessons.
In their Rhode Island rooms, 5 Flavor play two originals written by Hathaway. They plan to release a six song CD and promote it at some all original band showcases while playing out as a cover band in nightclubs . “Our goal is not to stay a cover band forever,” she said. 5 Flavor Discount play Whippersnappers on Saturday, February 28 at 9:00 p.m. $5 cover.
