"Join 5th Generation for Sublime Musical Entertainment"

FRIDAY July 15th, 2005

Of all the goups a young band might name as a prime influence, Sublime isn't likely to leap to the front of the pack.
But thats the name that come to us when talking with Joe Petriello, the bass player in a band known as 5th Generation, playing Saturday, July 16 at the Pit Surf Shop and Boardriders' Grill in Kill Devil Hills, NC.
"Their music was very down to earth, :said Petriello, during a telephone interview from his home in Greenville. "It's emotional- and more importantly danceable." Known for such songs as "What I got," "Santeria" and "Badfish," the Long Beach Calif. based Sublime led by the late Brad Nowell was known as Southern California's ultimate bar band in the 1990's. The group was the rare punk group that could bring on the funk, but with the added elements of rock, reggae, and ska. If you needed to get the party started and keep it going, Sublime was the band to do it. But mainstream success eluded the group, although at the time of Nowell's death in 1992 the group was gaining popularity and its albums were starting to sell. _ 5th Generation _ Petriello(Bass) , Sean Gregory (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Joel Santora (Percussion) and Austin Lewis (Drums) remakes about 40 Sublime Songs, using off the record arrangements. "People say we sound a lot like them" said Petriello, "Sean really has Brad's syle down."
But the quartet is not a one trick pony. It also has a half dozen funky reggae originals and has been known to reinvent matrerial from artists ranging from Snoop Dogg to the Grateful Dead to Bob Marley.
"Whatever gets people dancing" says Gregory, "It's all about having a good time, and making great music."

"All in the name of FUNK"

NOVEMBER edition of the MIXER, 2006

Almost two years ago, Sean Gregory, Joe Petriello, Austin Lewis, and Joel Santora first took the stage as 5th Generation. Their first club show was at the Hideaway in downtown Greenville. "We felt like rock starts," Petriello said half jokingly. "There were probably about 100-150 of our friends and the place was packed." These days, Hideaway has closed and reopened as Still Life, and Corrigans's is now Red Rooster, where on Sept.15, 5th Generation held the release party for their first full album, "Let the Music Hit." And while the crowd was still replete with the people personally close to the bandmates, anonymous fans also packed the floor in front of the stage. Their name is a play off Gregory's father's former college band, named "4th Generation." It began with Gregory and Lewis, who went to high school together in Richmond, Va. Lewis met Santora after they all came to East Carolina Universty. Santora reruited Petriello from an ECU dorm. "We lived in suites right next to each other," Santora said. "I could hear him playing bass through the walls."
Bella, Petriello's Dog completed the group as their masot.
When they first started, they played California ska-punk band Sublime's hits exclusively. Covers of "Santeria" and "Caress Me Down" were staples at 5th Geneartion shows. But even from the beginning , the band worked on their first original, "Burning Away."
The originals are still reminiscent of Sublime's style along with a mixture of reggae, hip-hop and rock through a combination of guitar, bass, drums, percussion and Gregory's unique vocal ability. They've shared the stage with bands like The Spin Doctors, Afroman, Arrested Development, Jah Creation, The movement, Soldiers of Jah Army, and Passafire.
And how often do people comment on Gregory's Vocals? "Every time we play," he said." I don't know why that is. It definitely happens alot." "Let the Music Hit"_ also the name of the album's closing song was recorded at Minimum Wage Recording in Richmond, VA. The 11 track CD includes their four best known originals, "Burning Away," "I wish," "Peace of Mind," and "Maryjane," plus 7 new songs, including "In Funk we Thrust," where santora raps along side of gregory. The Cd also includes performances from friends and musicians The Echo Boomers, Maples(on flute) NateDogg (Saxaphone), D.J (on trombone) and John Charlotte (trumpett).
Gergory, Lewis, Petriello and Santora are finishing up at ECU and Santora plans to attend medical school. In the meantime, they'll look to tour up and down the east coast while working toward another CD. - Greenville Mixer

Bio

5th Generation is a reggae/ rock band that formed in Greenville, North Carolina. There are four people that make up the core instrumentation, Sean Gregory on lead vocals and guitar, Joe Petriello on bass, Austin Lewis on drums, and Joel Santora on auxiliary percussion and vocals.

Hailing from neighboring high schools in Richmond, Va. Sean and Austin began jamming at ECU in the winter of 2005. The pair brought in Joel originally from Charlotte, North Carolina to add a rhythmical flair of percussion. Being a bass player shy, Joel recruited the final piece of the group. From Greensboro, North Carolina Joe, brings a funky, in your face style on the bass. Once the quartet was primed, they began preparing a set list of favorite Sublime songs so they could start playing frat parties. Soon the frat parties turned into clubs and bars, and before too long the group began traveling to as many places as possible. The attention gained in early 2006 propelled the group into a summer full of playing venues, beach bars, and dance clubs packed with music lovers from all walks of life.

After a very successful summer in 2006 the group had a chance to record their first full length album. On Sep. 15, 2006 they released their debut album “Let the Music Hit.” 5th Generation brings a powerful reggae rock vibe that is sure to get the dance floor moving and the keg beer flowing. The quartet has had the opportunity to share the stage with such distinguished acts as, S.O.J.A, The Movement, Jah Creation, Ballyhoo, Passafire, In Session, Arrested Development, The Spin Doctors, and Afroman. The typical show consists of an energetic mix of originals and crowd favorites ranging from Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, Marley, Grateful Dead, Pepper, Jay-Z , Snoop Dog and more.
