Cincinnati Indie Pop trio 74 West celebrates the release of its debut album, Life on Shuffle, this Saturday at Backstage Café (724 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky., 859-491-2445). The band will be joined by Let’s Get Handsome, Kingdoms Burn and Dark Colour for the 8 p.m. show.
A thoroughly entertaining and jubilant listen, Life on Shuffle is an endearing blend of ’80s New Wave and classic Power Pop. 74 West slathers the album with vintage New Wave ornamentation (snyths that wouldn’t be out of place on a Cars album, electronic-drum/drum-machine handclaps, etc.), but the strength of the melodies and rock-solid songwriting keep it from sounding too much like a retro novelty. The band cites Weezer as an influence, and that band’s first few albums are a good reference point, but the vocal harmonies and back-and-forth between husband/wife team Joey (guitar, keys) and Michelle (bass) Sparto take the music to another realm. A very promising first effort, Life on Shuffle is an Electro-laced, non-stop barrage of charming hooks and playful quirks.

Joey and Michelle Sparto, along with their ever-growing fan base, are thrilled over the release of their debut album, "Life on Shuffle."
Armed with contagiously catchy tunes, solid rock tracks, and bright and quirky electric synth melodies, this club favorite is tantalizing the masses. Their zingy pop punk riffs and 80s rock sound are attracting legions of new fans by the minute! Hints of an edgy underground style, buzzing with the sounds of pulsating guitars, distorted bass lines, rippling chords, and uptempo rock - it's all unmistakably the very best of 74 West!
74 West is Joey Sparto on vocals, guitars and keyboards, his wife Michelle Sparto on vocals and bass, and friend Tony Strader on drums.
Joey was in a nationally touring metal band who played festivals such as Motor City Music Conference and performed with Foxy Shazam, (hed) P.E., Tech N9ne, and Mushroomhead, to name a few. Tony's significant roster also included playing shows with national touring acts and currently plays guitar for notorious metal band Kingdoms Burn.
Michelle had a major role in the business management and booking for Joey's nationally touring band for almost 10 years. It was only natural they would merge and marry their styles and loves into their dream band.
After playing heavy metal rap fusion, Joey decided to transcend all expectations and create and play the music that spoke to him. Influenced by early 80s new wave and tech-noir, his pilgrimage was well underway. Michelle soon learned to sing and play bass guitar. 74 West - named for the highway that pulses through the heart of Cincinnati's west side - was born.
Current alternative music of every sort is Michelle's thing, while Joey has a long list of influences, including The Cars, Blink 182, Martini Ranch, Devo, Talking Heads, Weezer, and Roy Orbison.
74 West is currently playing venues in Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Indianapolis.
