"2 JIT 2 QUIT: IN SEARCH OF DETROIT'S STREET DANCE CULTURE PAST AND PRESENT"

"...Martez Claybren, 21, a club kid who organizes underground techno parties—including the Chicago-Detroit juke and ghettotech party at North End Studios last month that generated headlines as Chicago footwork pioneer DJ Rashad was supposed to play the night of his death— says there’s a lukewarm taste for jit among peers his age, even though we noticed jitters were in full force at Martez's most recent event. “In current day Detroit, there is not a proper platform for the up-and-coming new composers of the ghettotech or jit scene,” he told us “Because of this, the relationship between the youth and their exposure to art forms has declined, leading to a wavering in the connection between the style itself and the community.” Youth his age are not even old enough to get into the parties that might play this stuff. What the jit scene is left with is an aging following that does not have the next generation taking the torch, he says..." - NOISEY

Bio

Martez is a Singer/Songwriter from Detroit Michigan. He is a soul vocalist who's style is reminiscent of the 90's with an outstanding use of vibrato and understanding of harmonies. His song writing abilities range from the straightforward cadences used in contemporary pop music all the way to the complicated harmonies used in hip hop and jazz music. Martez's music has a strong focus on lyrical content and expression of self-freedom. Similar to Frank Ocean, Dwele, James Fauntleroy, James Blake, Jamie Woon

Through his original songs, dj mixing and event curations, Martez is helping re-ignite the heart of Ghettotek and its influence in hip-hop, soul, and live music in Detroit branching all over the world. Over the past year, he's been working with many respected electronic and hip-hop composers to Detroit who've encouraged and influenced hi work on his first project "Everything is Everything." His sound reminds you of a culmination of D'angelo and DJ Rashad collaborating on a track, with vocal accompaniment from James Blake.Creating a colorful sound of 90's soul and unadulterated ghetto-house, all glued together with a futuristic production.

Martez has collaborated with many Ghettotek producers and artists including Teklife's DJ Taye, Deejay Earl and Heavee Dee, DJ Orange Julius and other Chicago staples.  He's worked with renown Detroit hip-hop composer Nick Speed, leading bass music connoisseur Marshall Applewhite also known as Cocky Balboa, and plans to work with local producers DJ FLP, KRYSPY, Dayygs and others.
