Aaron Black

Aaron Black

BandAlternativeSinger/Songwriter

Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and the Stones rolled up into one seismic singer/songwriter.

Biography

Aaron Black describes himself as "Another ungracefully aging punk rocker with an acoustic guitar."

He compares his voice to an overloaded gravel truck, and about his guitar playing, he says, "Believe me, a capella is way worse."

Despite this, he says, there are people who apparently find him quite entertaining.

Scoff at Love

Written By: Aaron Black

We are smoking, glowing chunks of weapons-grade plutonium
Our hearts are harder than that Star Trek ship of pure neutronium
Been burned so many times before, but always we returned again
Until we finally learned and swore we never would be burned again
All the slings and arrows that outrageous love has hit us with
Have turned us into toxic twisted lonely moonlit monoliths
Cupid's missiles shatter as they strike and bounce right off
And when we talk of love all we do is scoff.

Let's scoff at love - somethin' we've both had enough of
Let's scoff at romance, and fools who think they have a chance
Let's scoff at passion, because we understand
It's fleeting as fashion, always flashin' in the pan
Let's scoff at love, you know you always make me smile
So let's sit and scoff at love for a little while.

All the sacred, cursed promises we never should have made
All the times we tried too hard, denying we had overstayed
We have been betrayers, and we have been betrayed
And we have been the players, and we have been the played
And we have seen love shine so bright, and we have watched it fade
Our hearts have grown so jaded that they might as well be carved from jade
And if I tried to say those words I'd start to shake and cough
'Cause when we talk of love all we do is scoff.

Let's scoff at love - somethin' we've both had enough of
Let's scoff at romance, and fools who think they have a chance
Let's scoff at passion, because we understand
It's fleeting as fashion, always flashin' in the pan
Let's scoff at love, let's scoff at lovers and their plans
And maybe we can hold each other's hands.

BRIDGE:
Just a little contact, eye to eye
And I can kiss all my alleged resistance goodbye
Just a little contact, skin to skin
And look at this ridiculous predicament I'm in

Let's scoff at love - turn off those heavenly choirs above
Let's scoff at romance, we know it's just a mating dance
Let's scoff at passion, but maybe we're just lashin' out
Maybe there's a fragment of unreasonable doubt
Let's scoff at love, yeah, maybe we can scoff forever
Come on baby, let's scoff at love together.

Inside the Sun

Written By: Aaron Black

Inside the sun, there is no fire - fire cannot breathe
The protons share their body heat at ten million degrees
Upon that heat all life must feed, and in its light must learn to see
It's the furnace of creation for us all
It's the light that shines defiantly against the endless darkness
And never lets eternal darkness fall
It's the light that brings that heat to us, across the empty cold of space
And it's the light that I see shining from your face

Inside the sun, I understand, one mighty note must ring
All other wavelengths cancel out, on Amaterasu's koto string
Heaven and hell reverberate, the Earth would just disintegrate
If the ringing of that bell could carry here
From mountains down to molecules, everything but atoms
Would tremble, then fragment and disappear
And that's the sound that swells in me, to my confusion and surprise
Every time I look into your eyes

The Rightful King

Written By: Aaron Black

Long ago in the land they called Arcadia
There was a young cupbearer to the king
That was a title of prestige and power
And wealth and honor and everything

One day the old king, he just sorta vanished
They found the young cupbearer wearing his crown
He said, "My name is Sharru-kin," which means "The Rightful King"
And so that's the way they wrote it down

CHORUS
Cause the rightful king will always find a reason
And the rightful king will always find a way
And the rightful king will always do what's pleasin' to the gods
And the rightful king will always win the day

Far away in Khemet, Pharaoh sat on a golden throne
He ruled like a living god all down the Nile
And the rightful king he sat and thought about it
Well, he sat and thought about it for a while

The rightful king looked round at Mesopotamia
He decided Mesopotamia was a mess
Independent city-states, abrasive and contentious
But the rightful king had a better idea, o yes, yes, yes

REPEAT CHORUS

The rightful king he marched out of Arcadia
To make certain that his borders were secure
And he never stopped until he reached the ocean
Cause that's the only way he could be sure

Yeah, the rightful king he built a mighty empire
And he ruled it pretty much like a living god
In a few generations, the whole thing fell apart
But we still remember Sargon of Akkad

Well, maybe you really don't remember Sargon
Or maybe you know him better by another name
Call him Ashurbanipal or Nebuchadnezzar
Cause in the end they're really all the same

Cyrus, Alexander, or Caesar
Napoleon, or Stalin, or Mao
Or maybe you know the name of some new rightful king
Who's only just a young cupbearer now

REPEAT CHORUS

Now, the rightful king does not like to be questioned
Yeah, the rightful king will always shut you up
No, you better not let the rightful king be handing you your cup

Get On

Written By: Aaron Black

Check that locomotive, baby
It's hot, it's ready to run
Gonna pull out of the station
Like a bullet from a gun
Ain't no need to check my brakes
You know I ain't got none
Just climb on board your Engine Number One

Get on this train
Get on this train
Gonna rock you up and down, now, baby
Gonna shake you side to side
So come on, just get on this train and ride

This train don't stop at the border, baby
This train don't stop at Mars
This train gonna keep on takin' you
Right up to the stars
Your hand is on the throttle, baby,
Couldn't stop it if I tried,
So come on, just get on this train and ride

Get on this train
Get on this train
Baby you know my love is deep
You know my love is wide
So come on just get on this train and ride

Throw away your schedule
There ain't no such thing as time
The train is at the platform waiting
Whenever you've got the mind
Said if you get the notion,
Baby, you never gonna be denied
So come on just get on this train and ride

Get on this train
Get on this train
Have no fear, I'm your engineer
And baby, you know it's true
You know this engine only runs for you

Get on this train
Get on this train
And you don't need no ticket, baby,
Didn't I explain?
All you got to do is get on this train

Oh Goddess

Written By: Aaron Black

Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man
Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man
I feel so weak and foolish - this is not the way I am
Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man

Oh goddess, don't you send me from your light
Oh goddess, please don't send me from your light
Let me stay not just today, but forever and a night
Oh goddess, don't you send me from your light

BRIDGE:
I feel so lost and helpless – this is not the way I am
I used to be an oak tree in the world I understand
But you shook me to my roots when you took me by my hand
Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man

Oh goddess, won't you come and walk with me
Through gardens other eyes can never see
If only you would rise up to meet the god in me
Oh goddess, won't you come and talk with me

Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man
Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man
Wherever I can be with you, that is the promised land
Oh goddess, have mercy upon this man

Oh goddess, have mercy upon this poor, poor man

Little Red Rocker

Written By: Aaron Black

Born in Vladivostok with a rock and roll heart
Baby that deck was stacked against you from the very start
And the old gray men who ran your world could never understand
How your dreams they came from Hollywood and not from the Motherland

Moscow was a hotbed of artistic discontent
Artistic discontented you - of course that's where you went
In your torn black-market Levis and your AC/DC top
And a hunger for the new that burned in you and didn't know where to stop

My little red rocker - dancing underneath the lights
My little red rocker - yeah you're fighting that good fight
My little red rocker - little red star that shines so bright
Come on baby rock me tonight
Come on baby rock me tonight

Living on the underside brought a different kind of pain
Huddled in crowded cold containers - struggling in vain
Tried the life of a mother and wife and you got what so many girls get
But no matter how he beat you baby you're still not beaten yet

So now you dance in Hollywood, or maybe in Canoga Park
Perfect body shining brightly, perfect eyes so deep and dark
And you let the music take you and you close your eyes and dance
It's a vice it's a price it's a sacrifice, so your kids will have a chance

My little red rocker - dancing underneath the lights
My little red rocker - yeah you're fighting that good fight
My little red rocker - little red star that shines so bright
Come on baby rock me tonight
Come on baby rock me tonight

My little red rocker - dancing underneath the lights
My little red rocker - yeah you're fighting that good fight
My little red rocker everything's gonna be alright
Come on baby rock me tonight
Come on baby now come on
Little red rocker you're better than vodka
Come on let me rock you tonight
Come on let me rock you tonight

Clever Apes

Written By: Aaron Black

Funny little clever apes step onto the Savannah
Soon they learn to eat gazelle instead of the banana
Pointed sticks work very well for bringing home the dinners
And when they fight each other bigger sharper sticks make winners

Sticks and rocks and sharpened bits of bone
Clever apes never can leave bad enough alone

Now the finest monkey minds are working on solutions
Finding better ways of causing punctures and contusions
Spear and bow and arrow soon are schemed into existence
Ways of putting pointed sticks in someone from a distance

And these clever apes have just begun
Their efforts to make killing easy and fun

Next our clever apes learn how to cook up tin and copper
And from their ovens they pull out a conversation stopper
Cause bronze is bright and pretty, in esthetics it's not lacking
But best of all it keeps an edge despite continued hacking

And iron turned out better able still
To smash and slash those apes you wish to kill

No I don't hate progress, or science or technology
And yes I know that conflict is inherent in biology
I only wish that humankind had minds of less monstrosity
That ingenuity was not the slave of our ferocity
But down the long and bloody scar we jokingly call history
With chemistry and strategy we solved the greatest mysteries
Like how to force my will on other people who may not agree
And how to kill with ever greater power and efficiency

Gunpowder was clearly good for murder and for maiming
And cannon do the trick if you can hit where you are aiming
So Galileo stayed up late with plates of cold spaghetti
Working out the physics to turn apes into confetti

But these killer apes were amateurs
Their cultures could not kill like mine and yours

AK-47's, baby, Exocets and Stingers
Far too many itchy apes with itchy trigger fingers
Fusion warheads waiting to be launched sooner or later
Rocket powered pointed sticks that leave behind a crater

Hopefully they will not fly today
Tomorrow or the next day they well may
Don't kid yourself, and that's the end
