"Local L.A.: The ‘&’ in Aaron & Jane"

On a chillin’ Wednesday night, I took the train to South Pasadena for some wine and song.

I went to Firefly Bistro to listen to Aaron & Jane play their music, because I had met Jane briefly (through the Harry Potter group aforementioned in this blogsite), and she had told me about aaronandjanemusic.com so it piqued my interest. I must admit, I went in blind (deaf?), so that I could take in their sound as a fresh new thing. I wanted to sip on wine while listening to music that I’d never heard before. I wanted to be pleased by the brand-new.

Aaron & Jane far exceeded any expectations I could have possibly ever had! Their sound is a mellow tune filled with a lot of heart. What truly makes their performance(s) special, is the way they entice you and your eardrums by bouncing their talents off of each other in a musical combination that is both generous and remarkable.

Aaron & Jane are self-described as “opposite individuals” that blend “different musical and artistic backgrounds”. (Jane is classically-trained. Aaron is self-taught.)

Aaron Therol… sings, and plays the guitar. Jane Kim… also sings, and plays the cello.

They sing of hardship, broken love, and feeling forlorn. They also sing of hope, perseverance, and togetherness.

When Aaron sings, his voice presents you with a nice melancholy that you can easily relate to, while at the same time strumming a soothing vibe from his guitar. His songs are like a comfort zone.

Jane joins him with the cello, expertly played to achieve a string of musical emotions that seamlessly attach themselves to Aaron’s voice, to form a beautiful symbiotic song. When she sings, she exudes serenity.

I think these two musicians are pretty exceptional; and that they have achieved a successful fusion of their diverse talents/sounds. The best part of Aaron & Jane is the “&”.

I know a fair review must include constructive criticism, but I was so highly entertained by their music, that I don’t seem to have anything bad to say about Aaron & Jane.

Go ‘Like’ their Facebook page and then go see one of their shows (and/or buy their music on iTunes!) … I think you’ll like it. A good number of patrons at Firefly visited Aaron & Jane’s table to praise them with words like: “inspiring”, “enjoyable”, and “gorgeous”. - Bazinga

"Seattle Music Insider Greg Roth talks with LA based singer songwriter duo aaron&jane"

On this week’s show I speak with LA singer and song writing duo Aaron and Jane. They were recently in town for a series of Northwest shows.
- Seattle Music Insider

"Aaron&Jane"

How did you guys get started with all this??
Heartbreak. Writing songs was the refuge for aaron in the midst of a broken relationship. Sometimes emotional pain is so deep you have no other outlet except music. During this time, aaron was looking for a musical partner and was introduced to jane as a classical musician through a mutual friend. During our first meeting, we played music for a couple hours and immediately hit it off. The music blended beautifully, playing together just felt so comfortable, and we decided to play again a week later. We were divinely given opportunities to perform live and began to seriously invest in our music as a duo about two months after we first met.

What's the message to transmit with your music??
Our music is really just about life. Experiences in everybody's life, though different in detail, really connects us to one another through the sorrows, struggles, and joys we feel universally. Music somehow unites people through the expression of these emotions. We also understand that life is rough. Music and the arts give people an opportunity to "escape" or renew a sense of their purpose and grasp the beauty in life. We want our music to be able to touch people in this way.

What's your method at the time of writing a song??
Aaron is the primary songwriter in our duo. There really is no method to his madness. He is the epitome of "create when you're inspired." He will wake up in the morning and just come up with a song. While he is just creating, Jane is able to fill in and add a little more depth to the music once she hears the skeleton of the song. It's hard to describe to someone how you just hear or feel something. There's no magic or method to it. We just ... do it!

Who are your music influences??
Our music influences are Joshua Radin, Damien Rice, Regina Spektor, Priscilla Ahn, and Coldplay.

What plans do you guys have for the future??
We have both experienced the reality that life doesn't always turn out the way you plan. We have our goals obviously, but we are just thankful to have found our music together and really give thanks to God that we have come as far as we have in such a short time. Our plans mainly revolve around further publicizing who we are to the world. We want to record more albums and possibly collaborate with other musicians.

What has been the funniest prank you have been or took part while on tour or after a show??
This prank is not really funny, but it is probably funny to the people who committed this crime. We were doing a show and had brought Jane's cello and two guitars. For whatever reason, we decided to leave one guitar in the car and just use one guitar. When we went back to our car after the show, someone had busted the window of Aaron's car and Jane's beautiful Martin DM was stolen! Now, whenever we go eat after a show we bring all of our instruments inside with us. We're just joking. But we definitely won't go anywhere afterward unless we can park the car where we can actually see it from the restaurant.

If you were stranded in the middle of nowhere after a show or while on tour. The help is 65 miles away from where you and your band (If any) are, Who would you send to look for help? And if while the rest wait, there's no food and the only way to feed yourself is by eating each other, Who would you eat first?
We decided that we would send Aaron. First of all, because Jane is pretty frail she is prone to fainting. Aaron is sturdy and probably able to walk the 65 miles. Second, Jane is deathly afraid of many things including strangers and the dark. She probably wouldn't make it one mile. Jane also adamantly says that she should eat Aaron first until help comes along. Being the kind man Aaron is, he humbly agrees.

Which country you would love to play?
South Korea, since that is where Jane was born.

With which bands you would love to share stage??
Bono, if you're reading this, give us a call. Jay-Z, Eminem, Taylor Swift, Dudamel, our musical influences we listed earlier and many more. Performing music with other great musicians is not limited to any genre - we would find it exciting to collaborate with all different bands and solo artists.

Are you OK, with the direction the band is going actually?
We are very happy with the direction we are going! We have had numerous opportunities to perform and we are extremely blessed. In this field, there are many things outside of your control. We want to know that in the areas where we do have control, we have given it our best.

"New Acoustic Duo Shines Like a Diamond"

Even the best bands in the world were local at some point, right? It's easy to forget something like that when looking for a new sound in your area to throw into your music rotation. Only so many good bands out there are already established. Why not catch up on some of those?

Sometimes, though, true gems can be found in the local scene. Aaron & Jane, an acoustic duo out of Glendale, definitely qualify as one such act. And what is most interesting about the pair is that—on paper at least—they seem like they should not even be together.

Aaron & Jane are Aaron Therol and Jane Kim, two Southern California musicians with little in common beyond a shared love for making music. Therol is a passionate guitarist with a gritty voice. Kim, on the other hand, is a classically trained cellist, and her soft, haunting vocals seem almost like an afterthought in the wake of Therol's powerful delivery. And they have only been making music together for just over a year at this point, having met in late August 2009. Yet somehow it works.

Their first album, "A Long Road Home…," portrays their style and personality much better than words ever could. Instead of the usual hard plastic case, the CD comes packaged in an elaborately embroidered felt pouch. While this may seem quirky at first, this humble presentation perfectly matches the sound on the album within.

Aaron & Jane's music is sweet, simple, unaffected, but also layered and profound. The lyrics are not always the most original—on "Miss You," the album's first track, the chorus is essentially "I miss you more than words can say" repeated over an over—but the song still somehow manages to retain a startling power. They could be singing in another language, or complete gibberish, and it would still sound soulful and sincere.

At its most basic level, the band could be dismissed out of hand as just another singer/songwriter team. That criticism fails to take into account Kim's startling contributions. Her cello—and sometimes even her voice—breaks in at the most unexpected times, transforming each track from a solid acoustic solo tune into a compelling and layered duet.

Aaron & Jane's passion and genuine desire to make beautiful music shine on "A Long Road Home…." The album is raw and free of unnecessary production, largely owing to the fact that the band has yet to sign to a label. Local though they may be, it is doubtful that Aaron & Jane will remain unsigned for very long.
