"Local metal band A Balance Of Power fill in the blanks for metal fans"

A Balance Of Power is among the favored in the SLC music scene. They have rocked our humble metal souls around seven years and have recently been attracting more then just metal fans attention.

I had the chance to chat with them not to long ago and discovered they have the heart and soul that metal music demands and an appetite for more that will surely slam them into metal history.

Shannon- How long have you been together and do you have a new album?
ABOP- We have been together about 7 years. We just released a 5 song E.P. "Stomp the Ground" which was mixed by the legendary Roy Z. and mastered by Maor Appelbaum. We are also writing for our 2010 release.

Shannon- Who has influenced you musically as well as in life?
ABOP- So many bands influenced and drive us musically. Bands like Iron Maiden, Unearth, Testament, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, etc. Music is our life, so music plays a big part in life experience.

Shannon- Where do you hope your music takes you?
ABOP- We hope it takes and keeps us on the road!! To us, the goal is to tour! tour! tour! If we can play shows, see the country and pay our bills....that's the dream!

Shannon- What do you guys get out of your music?
ABOP- Each of us have a personal love for music and it effects us each differently. For some, it's the adrenaline. For others, it's the love of traveling or the stage experience.

Shannon- What has been your best moment as a band?
ABOP- There have been so many over the years. One of our crowning moments was having lunch with Jagermeister artist relations, Steven Puente, at the famous Hodad's in Ocean Beach, California, That was the day we became the "first" Jager sponsored band in Utah!! Then the next night we played The Whiskey A Go Go....very humbling!

Shannon- Are you touring or planning on touring?
ABOP- We will be embarking on a 3 week Jager sponsored tour in July that will take us to the East coast and back, hitting a different city each night. A band out of Virginia, St. Diablo (also Jager sponsored), will be flying out to Salt Lake to kick the tour off with us and we will be traveling with them the entire way! The high point of the tour will be playing the New York MetalFest in front of an estimated 30,000-60,000 people!

Shannon- Wow that will be amazing. Do you have any last words?
ABOP- We have fought "literally" to overcome and are very lucky to be where we are and could not have done it without the people who believed in us; Rocky Mountain HardCore and our extremely loyal fans!

Gargling Satan’s Babies: SLC's A Balance of Power preps for the big time.

Sixty-five cities have hosted the Project Independent metal tour this year and each has entered one band into a contest worth thousands of dollars in gear, a record deal and a national tour. Salt Lake City metal heads A Balance of Power have advanced to the finals representing our region, primed for their close-up. The group’s tight musicianship and metal-as-hell live show hit me upside the noggin: It’s easy to see how they won the last round of voting.

The band has existed in some wicked incarnation for the last four years, culminating in the beast they are now—drummer Marvin Dixon, and recent addition Shane Garner on rhythm guitar (a “Tricky Ricky” greatly skilled at molding to his new environs). Add to the lineup of Chuck Stone, Colton Bales and founder Chris Margetts.

A Balance of Power’s favorite bands include Machine Head, Mudvayne, The Haunted, Testament, and Iron Maiden, and the resulting sound is that of Satan gargling babies and shreddin’ for your soul. Fans of real, hard metal flock to the showcases featuring some of the best bass playing I’ve seen courtesy of super-fast Bales. It’s strenuous stuff to finger pluck so rapidly and watching his chops up-close is humbling. Dixon’s steady hands on the sticks round out the rhythm section, giving the band the underbelly it needs to vibrate your spine. And he’s serious about his gear: “It’s made for hardcore pounding,” Dixon beamed after one gig, showing off his new cymbal—the heaviest sucker I’ve ever seen.

The band just finished recording their debut album with Bruce Kirby at Boho Digitalia, and Los Angeles producer Roy Z (Judas Priest, Alice Cooper) will complete the final mix-down in California. A Balance of Power’s investment, time- and sweat-wise, should be rewarded this year and would get a huge boost if they receive the needed support from City Weekly reader’s votes. Final nationwide voting starts Dec.1 at ProjectIndependent.net. Support your local scene with one mouse click. Wouldn’t it be nice to see a big local metal band make it big for once?
