A Banquet – brief biography
A Banquet are a three-member rock band from Prague, CZ, formed in autumn 2009. The band consists of Mathieu (lead vocals, guitars, synths, lyrics), Michael (bass, guitar, synths) and Richard (drums). Their first public gig took place only two years ago, in February 2010, since then they ranked unbelievably quickly among the top CZ indie bands. A Banquet reflect the contemporary music genres, but they do not forget the pearls of music history – covering all of that in their own music style called futu-roll. "We are mainly influenced by 80s’ underground and alternative rock bands of early 90s but we are also inspired by various music genres, which we still absorb from all around – starting from 60s and 70s rock bands, ending at contemporary electronica projects," reveals Michael band’s inspiration.
As the guys like to mix many music genres, they connect the past and the present even in the band’s name. Banquet refers to the legendary album of The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet, 1968, but also to the big hit single by Bloc Party called Banquet, which occupied top places of music charts nearly four decades later.
Richard joined Mathieu and Michael in autumn 2009 and the band considers this moment as the official foundation of A Banquet. Shortly after they recorded their first home-made EP called simply Futu-roll!. The EP, which consisted of 4 songs, had a great success among Czech indie fans and so the band went for their first CZ tour called Are you ready for Futu-roll?! in spring 2010. In April 2010, in the middle of the tour, the leading Czech producer Boris Carloff came across the band and proposed recording a debut single with him. The band liked the cooperation and the Dark Streets single was followed by the 6-song EP in autumn 2010.
Other singles, for instance Freeze to Caress (EP, 2010) or Lost in Your Shades (Single, 2011), were put on playlists of many Czech and Slovak radio stations (Radio Expres, Rockzone, Bonton, Rádio_FM and others) as well as on several TV Channels, such as Czech national TV, MTV Czech etc. A Banquet are also acclaimed among music critics due their diligence and originality. They were marked as the biggest anticipation of 2012 by MF Dnes (the largest CZ daily newspaper), announced as The Newcomer of the year 2010 by IndieMusic.cz (the largest Czech online portal dealing with Global Indie Scene) or nominated by fans as The Newcomer Of the year 2011 in Žebrík Poll (one of the biggest public voting competitions in CZ).
Very anticipated debut album Breath was released on 3rd of April 2012. A Banquet cooperated not only with Boris Carloff but also with American musician, producer and the father of grunge, Steve Albini. It was him who contributed to albums of such a great bands and artists as Pixies, PJ Harvey or Manic Street Preachers. His most significant achievement of cooperation remains on the last album of the legendary band Nirvana (In Utero). His signature is of course fundamentally reflected on the A Banquet’s album Breath, which was partially recorded in Chicago at Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio. After the release the album held top-sellers positions at supraphonline.cz (the largest CZ online music shop) for more than 5 weeks. First music video from the album (Far Away) was put on playlists of MTV (CZ/SK), many Czech and Slovak radio stations and the video still occupies top places in the biggest Czech music chart (T-Music Chart).
Currently Mathieu, Michael and Richard are getting ready for the upcoming summer festivals and preparing for an autumn European tour.

Hi! Let's start from the beginning: how were born the “A Banquet”?
Mathieu:
Hey! We got together in Prague in autumn 2009, 3 guys with a huge passion to play live, write music and with a deep hope of becoming a really big band someday. And… we still do that with even more enthusiasm than before.

In 2010 your first EP "Kiss The Night", followed in 2011 by a series of singles. The same year the project of your debut album: tell us all about this album..
Oh yeah, it’s called “Breath”, it was released on 3rd of April on one Czech online music shop – will be followed by iTunes and other music stores worldwide since approx. half of April. We were working on the album for almost a year. Our Czech producer Boris Carloff met Steve Albini in Chicago one day and after some while we arranged a one-week-long recording session at his studio called Electrical Audio in Chicago… We were absolutely amazed there… Steve is a living legend – he worked with Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey and many other huge names that we love. We wanted to put the best from us to the recording and Steve helped us to make it real. Boris also helped us a lot as we were recording a part of the album in Prague with him. The LP contains 11 songs and we love it! Hope someone else will too :)

Which sounds have inspired you?
Our sound is a mix of many many genres. This album is most affected by 80s synth-pop, 80s underground, 90s alt-rock and grunge bands creating a special mixture we call “futu-roll”. But we like hundreds of bands starting from 60s till nowadays so it’s hard to tell which ones they are. We simply want to make our own distinguishable sound – listen to our songs and let us know what you think!

The disc was recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini: he was one of the founders of bands like Big Black and Rapeman, and he is still a Shellac's component. How did this collaboration come about?
Yep, as I has mentioned higher, Boris met Steve in Chicago and as he always helps us and spreads our name, he told Steve about us. We wanted so much to cooperate with him that we decided to ruin our credit cards, borrow loads of money to pay for the studio and plane tickets and in November 2011 we flew there. Actually who could record a grunge sound better than the “father” of grunge music! Everything we recorded there was recorded live, playing together – on tape. That was a great experience to do the album in the same way as our idols did it.


In the meantime you have made the video from the new single "Lost in Your Shades" was born from one of your own idea?
Yes, we wrote a screenplay together with Michael. We wanted to express what the song is really about – it symbolizes a fight between one’s heart and mind. We wanted to make it dark and to keep the point that this kind of fight can never be won.

You have self-defined your musical style as "FUTU-ROLL": what we mean and why?
It was at the very beginning of our band when we were thinking about the name and this kind of stuff. We didn’t want to write 10 different music styles in a row so we came with our own. It’s great ‘cos with this style we can do anything we want - there are no borders.

You were announced as “the Biggest CZ Anticipation 2012” by MF DNES, the largest Czech daily newspaper: did you expect so much success in your home country?
We’ve been working really hard and so we’re very glad for this award. But honestly we are happy for any interview we can give or a small note that someone puts down on a blog – basically, if someone is interested in our band it all makes sense. We’d like to success abroad and tour Europe, first step is of course here in CZ, but if anyone liked our music and wanted us to play in other countries, just let us know, we’d be the happiest people, really!

Future projects of "A Banquet"?
Tour Czech Republic and Slovakia during this spring and summer and prepare a big tour for this autumn to support our album. And - Next stop is: Let the world know about us:)

„Chteli sme kapelu, která nebude trpet ceskýma komplexama a snese srovnání se soucasnýma zahranicníma kapelama," prohlašuje mladá pražská formace, kterou nekolik ceských serveru vyhlásilo za objev roku 2010. I pres svou krátkou existenci dokázali totiž A Banquet vystoupit z rady a slaví tak na naší scéne jeden úspech za druhým.

Clenové kapely Matej (zpev, kytara, samply, klávesy a texty), Michael (basa, kytara, klavír/ klávesy a vokály) a Richard (bicí) se spojili koncem roku 2009 a ve svých ambicích meli jasno: vystoupit ze šedi ceské scény a delat tvorbu na evropské úrovni. Už od pocátku tak tvorili ve vlastním, specifickém žánru, se kterým se ceský posluchac v našich luzích a hájích vskutku casto nesetká. Sami ho pojmenovali jako FUTU-ROLL a popisují jej jako mix 60. až 80. Let, nakombinovaný s moderními nezávislými žánry jako jsou nu-rave nebo electro. FUTU-ROLL byl i názvem debutového demo EP, který dala kapela na pocátku roku 2010 dohromady.

Následovala jarní mini-tour po vetších mestech naší republiky, behem které si A Banquet na víkend zaskocili i do nahrávacího studia Borise Carloffa (Kryštof, Sunshine), aby natocili svuj debutový singl Dark Streets. Ten vyvolal nadšené reakce, na bandzone.cz se stal nejposlouchanejší písní dne a v poradu FRESH! uvedlo jeho remix od Armina Effenbergera (Cartonnage) i pražské rádio EXPRESS. V cervnu se pak singl objevil na kompilaci CZECHSOUND, který vyšel jako príloha casopisu Report. Další „prukopnickou" cinností kapely bylo v léte 2010 usporádání online streamovaného koncertu (probehl celkem dvakrát), který se konal v obývacím pokoji kapely a po každé písni následovala diskuze s fanoušky kapely po Facebooku. Jako jedni z prvních ceských kapel hráli A Banquet rovnež na svetoznámé internetové televizi BalconyTV, která vysílá v nejvetších svetových metropolích, jako jsou New York, Paríž a další.

Na zacátku ríjna 2010 se A Banquet opet pustili do spolupráce s Borisem Carloffem a koncem listopadu dokoncili nahrávání svého debutového EP s názvem Kiss the Night!, které jako správní indie vydali na vlastním labelu Emerald Eyes Records. Debut obsahovuje ctyri zcela nové tracky a dve starší písne v novém kabáte, je volne ke stažení na stránkách kapely (http://www.a-banquet.com) stejne jako na jejich facebookovém profilu. Nahrávka sklidila nadšené reakce kritiku: Jan Hryc ze serveru indiemusic.cz napríklad prohlásil, že EP je jedním z nejlepších pocinu roku a špatne si nevede ani ve srovnání se zahranicními interprety. Deska se vskutku vyznacuje nápaditým zvukem stejne jako texty a jedná se tak o pocin kvalitní nejen „na ceskou scénu" (jak je castým zvykem domácí interprety hodnotit), ale i v rámci soucasné hudební produkce jako takové.

Svuj debut pokrtila kapela spolecne s formací NiceLand v pražské Lucerne a zanedlouho na to se vydala na své první velké turné s názvem FUTU-ROLL COMES TO RUIN YOUR CITY!. V jeho rámci koncertovala témer ve všech známých klubech v naší republice a podívala se i do slovenských mest Bratislavy a Pieštan. Konec roku oslavili A Banquet koncertem v Chapeau Rouge spolecne s britským objevem nezávislé scény The Feud a nelení ani v roce 2011: pro své fanoušky chystají tri zbrusu nové písne a chystají i další jarní turné. Prozatím bude kapela k videní 12. února v domažlickém klubu Rodriguez, 25. února v pražském klubu Chapeau Rouge (spolecne s formacemi Dead Pope's Company a Tescohippies) a 5. brezna v telcském klubu Metro. - Stagerine.com

A Banquet
Samozrejme že mne hned napadlo nekolik zahranicních interpretu, nabízejí se treba Chapel Club, Best Coast, Delphic, Was She a Wampire, Hurts, Sleigh Bells, The Smith Westerns nebo Lip Service (The Drums bych nepocítal vzhledem k tomu, že je znám už od roku 2009). Nicméne mne nikdo tak mile neprekvapil jako A Banquet, kterí, spolu s dalšími, pumpují novou krev do stojatých ceských vod. - IndieMusic.cz

A Banquet je nová nadejná kapela prinášející na ceskou hudební scénu vlastní styl zvaný Futu-roll. Skupina, která jako první v Ceské republice uvedla „do provozu“ pojem online streamovaný koncert, vydala koncem roku 2010 debutové EP s názvem Kiss The Night!

„Milujeme noc, protože se v ní clovek stává svobodnejším, protože je krásná a protože má nepopsatelnou atmosféru, která bourá konvence a stereotypy – i o tom je jak naše deska, tak A Banquet vubec,“ vysvetluje název EP frontman a kytarista Mathieu von A Banquet. Krome nej v kapele fungují baskytarista Michael von A Banquet a bubeník Richard von A Banquet.

Na EP Kiss The Night! spolupracovala celá kapela a výsledkem je dle jejich vlastních slov fúze spousty žánru, které mají rádi – od 80´s k tomu nejsoucasnejšímu. Je to deska plná energie, niterních pocitu, frackovství, deprese a nadeje, zkrátka je taková, jací jsou clenové kapely. „Chceme vystoupit z šedi, která panuje na ceské scéne, a chceme, aby cokoli, co deláme, bylo na evropské úrovni. Už nás nebaví si porád císt, že je neco dobrý ´na ceský pomery‘. Hudba je jenom jedna a my chceme neco dokázat,“ ríká Mathieu.
Produkce EP se ujal Boris Carloff, který v minulosti spolupracoval napríklad s kapelami Kryštof nebo Sunshine. „A Banquet je kapela, se kterou mi stojí za to pracovat. Krome nesporného talentu je tu i pracovitost a pokora, která se u ceských kapel vyskytuje s nepravidelnou vzácností…“ uvádí Carloff.

A Banquet založili Mathieu a Michael v léte 2009 poté, co rozpustili své predchozí kapely – chteli se venovat hudbe naplno. Oficiální vznik ale datují až od ríjna 2009, kdy je doplnil bubeník Richard. Za svoji pomerne krátkou existenci stihla tríclenná formace odjet více než padesát koncertu, zahrát si po boku kapel jako NiceLand, 100°C, Cartonage nebo The Feud (UK) a predstavit se hned dvakrát na Slovensku.

Jako první kapela v CR uskutecnili A Banquet dva online akustické koncerty vysílané žive z obývacího pokoje. Behem nich komunikují s fanoušky prostrednictvím Facebooku.
A Banquet se také jako jedna z mála ceských kapel objevila na svetoznámé internetové televizi Balcony TV, která vysílá také napríklad z New Yorku, Londýna, Paríže nebo Toronta.

Skupina definovala vlastní hudební styl FUTU-ROLL, který pro ne predstavuje mix 60., 70. a raných 80. let spolu s moderními nezávislými žánry jako indie, electro, nu-rave a dalšími.
V soucasné dobe A Banquet skládají nové písne, chystají se na jarní evropské turné a pripravují svuj první oficiální videoklip.



ROZHOVOR S FRONTMANEM MATHIEU VON A BANQUET

Kapela A Banquet je na ceské hudební scéne celkem novácek, jaké máte do budoucna vize, ceho chcete dosáhnout?

„Naším nejvetším snem je živit se tím, co nás baví ze všeho nejvíc – hudbou. Chceme hrát hodne v zahranicí a dokázat, že i v Cesku muže vzniknout kapela, která je srovnatelná se svetovou scénou. K tomu vede ješte strašne dlouhá cesta, ale my tomu veríme, jsme odhodlaní, makáme, jak nejvíc mužeme a milujeme to!“


Jak jste prišli na název A Banquet?

„Inspirovala nás k tomu deska Beggars Banquet od Rolling Stones a písnicka Banquet od Bloc Party. Je to spojení minulosti a soucasnosti, které se nám líbí a ze kterýho naše hudba vychází. ,A´ má hlavne vyjadrovat urcitou jedinecnost, kterou chceme nabídnout, a zároven jsme nechteli být ve stejný vlne se všema ,The´ kapelama...“

Do hudebního sveta jste prinesli nový pojem futu-roll, co to znamená?

„Je to náš hudební styl, naše škatulka, kterou jsme si sami vytvorili. Dává nám to velkou tvurcí svobodu, protože ve svém vlastním stylu si mužeme delat, co chceme. Obecne se jedná o spojení 60´s, 70´s, raných 80´s a nové fresh indie muziky – zkrátka toho, co posloucháme a máme rádi. Hodne elektra, hodne zkreslení, intimita, melodie, bordel a hlavne kurva hodne energie!“

Jak vznikalo vaše EP Kiss The Night!?

„Na Kiss the Night! jsme pracovali od jara 2010, kdy jsme natocili debutový singl Dark Streets, další písnicky jsme skládali pres léto. Je to dlouhej proces, protože toho opravdu hodne vyhazujeme – chceme si za vším, co deláme, vždycky stoprocentne stát. EP produkoval Boris Carloff, který si nás vybral pro spolupráci a hrozne jsme si sedli, jak hudebne, tak lidsky. V jeho studiu deska vznikala behem ríjna a listopadu 2010. Fotky na booklet nám nafotila Kristýna Erbenová. Zbytek jsme tvorili ve stylu DIY...“



Na co všechno se fanoušci mužou v dohledné dobe tešit?

„Na jaro a zacátek léta plánujeme evropskou tour, v rámci které bychom meli jet hodne koncertu na Slovensku, potom v Polsku, Nemecku, Británii, Rakousku a doufáme, že se podarí ješte další koncerty. A samozrejme budeme koncertovat i v CR, všechno je na našich stránkách a profilech. Fanoušci se mužou tešit i na videoklip k Freeze to Caress, na novej zvuk a nový písnicky, na kterých práve pracujeme. A taky nové oblecení, že jo;).“ - Mix.cz

Když jsme s A Banquet pripravovali rozhovor pro IMTV, Boris Carloff i celá kapela nás ujištovali, že chystané EP Kiss the Night! bude znít jinak než ostatní ceské desky. Omyl. Tohle EP si nevede špatne ani ve srovnání se zahranicními interprety. A Banquet jej na podzim nahrávali ve studiu Borise Carloffa a jeho krest probehl v pražském Lucerna Music Baru, což jste mohli zaznamenat i z naší fotostory. Trio Matej, Michael a Richard prichází se žánrem, který sami nazvali futu-roll a servírují nám ho hned na šesti kouscích. V ostravském klubu Templ se to poslední dobou jenom hemží koncerty. V nedávné dobe tam své show odehráli Niceland, Sunshnine neboToxique. Tentokrát se stal Templ jevištem další skupiny a sice pražských A Banquet. Nedávno vzniklá trojice mladých hudebníku rozproudila ctvrtecní vecer v rámci svého turné „Futu-roll comes to riun your city“ všemi možnými zvuky indie stylu. Po koncerte jsem se jich ptala nejen na to, jak se jim hrálo ale hlavne na plánky do budoucna. Za rok 2010 stihli odehrát pres 50 koncertu, vyjet na turné s kapelou Niceland a pokrtít své debutové album. Na ceste za úspechem si razí vlastní nekonvencní cestu, pritom se nebojí otevrene kritizovat tuzemskou hudební scénu. „Je to tady hrozne zoufalý, takový zastydlý a zakomplexovaný,“ tvrdí kdo?
