Biography

At the centre of Abbe May’s charm is an extraordinary voice - a stirring howl borne on the melancholic balladry of a grieving heart. As confrontational as it is vulnerable, her characteristically anguished moan conceals an undercurrent of hot-blooded intensity within the poetry and grunge-fuelled candour of her music and band The Rockin’ Pneumonia.

Abbe May & The Rockin’ Pneumonia’s unadulterated talent does not go unnoticed, winning numerous WAMi Awards –including ‘Best Female Vocalist’ in 2007 and 2008, and ‘Most Promising Act’ in 2008. Abbe May and her rockin’ blues band have been captivating a growing audience and tirelessly amassing a significant repertoire.
In May 2008, the debut album ‘Howl and Moan’ by Abbe May was released and is set to capture the nation with the same ferocity as her volatile and electrifying live shows. Abbe says,

“Howl and Moan is about passion and grief.. these songs are about howling for the dead and moaning for the beloved.. Howl and Moan is the only way I could put a ghost to rest and exorcise another from my house.”

Recorded over the summer of 2007 and mixed in the autumn of 2008, Abbe May has produced her first great body of work in ‘Howl And Moan’ - an album about immense love and loss, the epitome of unleashed passion, it makes obvious the enormous talent of Abbe May and her band The Rockin’ Pneumonia.
“Sensational, confident and in possession of a rich, powerful voice”
Bradley Stevens, Drum Media

“Her powerful voice sounds scotch soaked, and her band are fierce”
Laura Miller, Drum Media

“May emanates the yearning and despair of a wounded heart with earnest words and stirring vocals”
Steph Kretowics, Drum Media

“Astonishingly captivating”
Harvey Rae, Drum Media

“Unique blues song writing talent”
Vanessa Stasiw, Xpress

“Not only does May have a mighty voice; an impressive vocal talent that can reach over the heaviest and grungiest sound, but she also displays an awesome grasp of the blues guitar, belting out an incredible set of riffs.”
Steve Groves, Xpress

“What is evident in watching May perform is her grasp of the fundamentals of blues, developed from a long study and practice of this genre.”
Steve Groves, Xpress

“Whoever has possessed her doesn’t want to stay bottled up”
Steve Groves, Xpress

“A genuine front woman is hard to describe, but unmissable when you see it and there is no mistaking Abbe May for anything else.”

Caroline Dempsey – Inpress

“Pulling heavily from country, rock and blues, her songs are both peripherally modern and anchored heavily in the roots of each genre. True to the blues she sings mostly about love, particularly the loosing and scorning of it, a theme that despite its years of practice remains just as riveting when the right person is singing it…..
Abbe May is certainly one of the right ones, the girl couldn’t miss a note if she tried”

Caroline Dempsey – Inpress

“exciting album”
Bernard Zuel - Sydney Morning Herald

” A voice that doesn't walk so much as strut over your objections.”

Bernard Zuel - Sydney Morning Herald

"If Johnny Cash played blues driven like a train then Abbe May has thrown Patti Smith on those same tracks, sending the train sideways." –Xpress Magazine

Lyrics

You Took My Geetah

Written By: Abbe May

Don't be like that
i said i loved you
and i swear i still do
Thought you might come back
i want to love you
but i can't get close to you

though i tried
yeah i cried
over you
yeah yeah yeah

You took my wallet
and you spend my money
and you took my heart
and you stood all on it honey
You took your lovin'
and you give it all to someone
better looking than me

Don't be like that
i said i'd call you
and i swear i meant to
didn't want you back
Then i seen you
i just don't know
what to do
over you
yeah you
yeah yeah yeah

You took my geetah
and you de-strung it
and you took my number
but you never rung it honey
You took my loving
and you gave it all
to someone better looking than me

O seasons change my mind
sweet rose that blooms then dies
The sun shines brightest
before it starts to go down
The moon just waits
for its turn to come round
Well i'll just sit here and wait
for you to come round
and see me sometime

you took my geetah
and you de-strung it
you took my number
but you never rung it
you took all yor loving
and you gave it
to someone better looking than me
