Biography

Above the Atlantic first came into existence in October of 2009 with a simple goal in mind – to make creative, honest rock music that could be appreciated by indie lovers and radio junkies alike. Singer/guitarist Matt Martin grew up playing acoustic music in Atlanta, GA, but when he moved to the Cleveland area, he knew that he wanted to explore new musical horizons. After meeting bassist Robbie Bookshar and drummer Ricky Hamilton, he knew that great things were to come. The three guys quickly discovered an incredible chemistry and a love for making music together. Today, after being a band for just over a year, Above the Atlantic has released a 5-song EP and full-length record, all recorded under the guidance of producer Mike Brown at Lava Room Recording Studios. Though the band is young, they’ve quickly developed a unique sound, with each member contributing their own creativity to the songwriting process. Whatever your musical tastes, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to love about Above the Atlantic’s music, whether it be their energetic live shows, unique lyrics, memorable bass lines, or massive drum sounds. The band’s off to an incredibly exciting start; look for big things to come in the future.

Lyrics

Honor Me

Written By: Matt Martin

We started this without a sound
We started this underground
We saw the red, but no one said
That this is how it’d have to end

Oh but nothing’s gonna change it
And nothing’s gonna take it

Honor me, because I’m not gonna go
Down this darkened road,
Without your sunrise drawing near
Don’t bury me, because nothing grows
Without a light, so let it show

Though you said that this would be
The only way that we could live
I believe that autumn’s wind,
Won’t provide a fatal end

Oh but nothing’s gonna change it
And nothing’s gonna take it

Honor me, because I’m not gonna go
Down this darkened road,
Without your sunrise drawing near
Don’t bury me, because nothing grows
Without a light, so let it show

Oh maybe this way, the dark won’t crawl to me
And maybe this way, you will grow old with me
Maybe

Honor me, because I’m not gonna go
Down this darkened road,
Without your sunrise drawing near
Don’t bury me, because nothing grows
Without a light, so let it show

The Cycle

Written By: Matt Martin

When you're going down the corner
I'll see everything you are, yeah
When you're going down the corner

But don't you worry now my dear,
'Cause everything that you do here is
It's just a part of a cycle

Open up the door and run out
Of this place escape the flood now
Open up the door and run

Don't you know that he won't save you
Don't you know that he will cage you
Don't you know that he won't save you

Oh but it's alright now
I've just got to feel you
Because it's all right now
I've just go to feel you

The Closer

Written By: Matt Martin

Start it over,
‘Cause I feel that this place is blacking out
Turn it under
‘Cause I fear that this space is cracking now
Don’t let it break
‘Cause without it we are nothing now
Don’t let it take the ropes
‘Cause I don’t have the faith to let it out

So open up the black curtains
Free me, teach me how to live
Screaming underneath my skin
The cries that shake me from within

Can you hear the thunder?
Breaking up the skies tonight
Can you feel the rumble?
Of earth’s angry death from life
Oh but keep it close
‘Cause I can feel it coming now
Light arose, from your eyes
As you saw the heavens pouring out

So open up the black curtains
Free me, teach me how to live
Screaming underneath my skin
The cries that shake me from within

We're torn with hearts wide open
Screaming, reaching for the end
Just don’t let go, just don’t let go
It’s not gonna die this time again

You Made Me Know

Written By: Matt Martin, Robbie Bookshar

I know this wasn’t what you wanted
I didn’t know our love would crash
I wish I could tell you that all
Of these sparks are glowing
But I can’t

You made me know,
And now it starts to show
The days grow cold as these walls surround me
But there will be something left here
I will find a way
To rip away my heart's cage

Every time we jump, we fail to land
Hand in hand again
Please don’t paint the sky, from blue to red
‘Cause this storm must reach an end

You made me know,
And now it starts to show
The days grow cold as these walls surround me
But there will be something left here
I will find a way
To rip away my heart's cage

We've got to let this go
I'm begging you
I'm begging you

Now your heart will be so
Locked and faded, but
I must break it, cause inside lies the key
These new born cages, with scars erasing
We’re crying to be free
But I will try to save me from me

The Rest of Me

Written By: Matt Martin

And tell me are you out there?
Because the air's so cold here
And tell me are you coming?
'Cause I need something to trust in now

You're breathing in,
But you still feel nothing
You still feel nothing

We're all fighting,
But we're not sure what we're fighting for anymore
We're all searching,
But we haven't found what we've been searching for
Give me more than this,
More than just a kiss
Something to believe
This ain't no alibi, it's a battle cry
To get back the rest of me

Tell me is this it?
All these lies and hatred
Because we've built this kingdom
On war and guns

You're breathing in,
But you still feel nothing
You still feel nothing

We're all fighting,
But we're not sure what we're fighting for anymore
We're all searching,
But we haven't found what we've been searching for
Give me more than this,
More than just a kiss
Something to believe
This ain't no alibi, it's a battle cry
To get back the rest of me

You're breathing in,
Breathing out
You're breathing in,
But you still feel nothing
You still feel nothing

We're all fighting,
But we're not sure what we're fighting for anymore
We're all searching,
But we haven't found what we've been searching for
Give me more than this,
More than just a kiss
Something to believe
This ain't no alibi, it's a battle cry
To get back the rest of me

Destination

Written By: Matt Martin, Robbie Bookshar

I thought I was done here
Then I found out your love’s a gun, and
Why can’t you see that I want it to be released?
I wanna break it loose

But, soon you’ll show
All signs
This fire will glow
In time

I’m going to my destination
Without you I’ve no determination
Let all your levees break down
That’s just how it should be, oh I know it could be

You’re at a loss for words dear,
So let your body do all the work
Don’t think it, just feel it,
I want you to be so free
You know that it’s the truth

But, soon you’ll show
All signs
This fire will glow
In time

I’m going to my destination
Without you I’ve no determination
Let all your levees break down
That’s just how it should be, oh I know it could be

We are flowing with the tides
Trying to guide it with the moon
We’ll be ok when shorelines break through
It’s so much harder than you think
It’s so much harder than you think
It’s so much harder, than you eh oh eh oh

I’m going to my destination
Without you I’ve no determination
Let all your levees break down
That’s just how it should be, oh I know it could be

My Army

Written By: Matt Martin

I’m seeing all this burning red
I won’t believe this is the end
There’s hope inside the night
This ain’t the final fight
So run out of this wreck and
Breathe it slowly once again

Oh, it keeps repeating
‘Cause this heart is bleeding

I’m gonna tear these walls down
‘Cause surely they will crumble
But I will rise, my army will provide
Our love will overcome it,
These mountains cannot stop it
No, we won’t die, our army lies inside

We’re feeling tired and confused
First we’re wrought and then we’re used
But we can’t start anew
Until we conquer truth
So run out of this wreck and
Breathe it slowly once again

Oh, it keeps repeating
‘Cause this heart is bleeding

I’m gonna tear these walls down
‘Cause surely they will crumble
But I will rise, my army will provide
Our love will overcome it,
These mountains cannot stop it
No, we won’t die, our army lies inside

The Other Side

Written By: Matt Martin

Come round to the other side
Come round so I can see your face tonight
Don't let the fire die
Don't let the sparks go out behind your eyes

The night is young dear,
So won't you come out here?
The night is young dear,
So just take my hand and let's go, now

I'm hoping this way,
You'll be there before I'm gone
'Cause within these restraints,
I'm not feeling quite as strong
So give me your love, tangible
Give your love and don't you ever let go
So give me your love, tangible
Give me your love and don't you ever let go

Where are you going now?
It seems that somehow you've forgotten how
That this all started here
On the very ground where you now stand with fear

The night is young dear,
So won't you come out here?
The night is young dear,
So just take my hand and let's go, now

I'm hoping this way,
You'll be there before I'm gone
'Cause within these restraints,
I'm not feeling quite as strong
So give me your love, tangible
Give your love and don't you ever let go
So give me your love, tangible
Give me your love and don't you ever let go

Open Road

Written By: Matt Martin

Oh we're filling up the spaces
Like it once was
The memory is fading
But it's clear enough
To make these empty walls
Feel like home again
I'm trying to believe in
All our hopes in the end

But it's not quite, the same as it once was
'Cause this open road ain't going to the same place
Just don't let it, don't let it go
Oh 'cause I'm not sure, where to go from here

I am overwhelmed, dear
By all this fear
Tragedy is reigning,
I can feel it near
But please don't let it
Break your eyes tonight
'Cause maybe soon we'll see
Another light

But it's not quite, the same as it once was
'Cause this open road ain't going to the same place
Just don't let it, don't let it go
Oh 'cause I'm not sure, where to go from here

What others are saying...
"Heard them on 88.3. Great local band! One of the best I've heard in a long time. Above the Atlantic is a breath of fresh air with catchy, substantial lyrics, great guitar riffs and a lead singer with the voice of an angel. The lead singer is especially outstanding. I want to hear more!"
-iTunes Reviewer violentrockvigilante

"This is so addicting, always one of the first things i listen to. I know matt and his band, and they are just as good live as on the record. If you have an opportunity to see them live i say go for it!"
