Bio

Jose, Miguel and Andrew of the Orange County-based alternative rock band A Broken Opera are just in their 20s but it seems like these guys came from a time when Grunge ruled the airwaves and the late Kurt Cobain was king. “…It trips me out when I hear on the radio a song by Nirvana, STP or Pearl Jam…and I wonder when that stuff will get pushed to classic rock stations…then I’ll really feel old,” says lead singer Jose.

A Broken Opera’s unique panoramic pop/rock sound hardly resembles Grunge music of the early 1990s even though much of their rock idols came from that bygone era. The band’s musical experimentation is unmistakably edgy, characterized by harmonious guitar riffs, up-tempo piano melodies, ambient synth undertones and head-nodding beats that will make any listener rock out to their songs. “The three of us are influenced by music from the 90s but we’re not disconnected from the present. I personally like writing songs that grab people with a catchy riff…creating something that is current, authentic and unique for our generation, yet rooted in tradition” Miguel elaborates.

Formed in 2011, A Broken Opera recorded and released four songs produced by Marc Jordan (credits for The Cult, Slash, and Velvet Revolver) and mastered by Tom Baker (credits for 30 Seconds to Mars, Deftones, My Chemical Romance, Nine Inch Nails, etc.). Most notable of the four songs is Elevator, a Temper Trap meets Kings of Leon-styled anthem, which will hook you into chanting with the band and leave you mesmerized to a timeless sound that is A Broken Opera.

What will immediately strike you after listening to the four songs are their musical diversity and experimental nature: melodic rock (American Dreams), melodic punk pop (Elevator), ‘80s-styled synthpop (Sick Endeavor), and melodic alternative rock (Suffering). But regardless of how they are classified, A Broken Opera songs are for sure simply “melodic rock music” as Andrew puts it.

For a relatively new band, A Broken Opera has already performed at several popular live music venues in Southern California such as the Cabana Club, Detroit Bar, House of Blues Anaheim, The Foundation Room, The Slidebar, and Viper Room. Two notable shows that A Broken Opera has been involved with are opening for Adler’s Appetite at the Key Club Hollywood and Unwritten Law at The YOST Theater.

After making noise in the Southern California music scene in 2011, A Broken Opera is ready to take their songs on the road in 2012.
