"Track Stars: Add songs by Ane Brun, Abruzzi Spur and Catatonia to your playlist"

2. Abruzzi Spur, Dopamine. A jittery, Radiohead-ish number which captures the restlessness of February in Edmonton. We can taste the promise of warmer temperatures — and “the grass through your toes” — but we’re still trapped in a blizzard of swirling guitars, math-rock percussion and aching vocals. A stunning debut from a new Edmonton band.

"Northbest: Watch Abruzzi Spur's "The Skinny Set""

Abruzzi Spur is an Edmonton 5-piece outfit with a sound not unlike 90's alternative rock. They follow in the footsteps of fellow Canadian group Pilot Speed, with similarities in the effect-laden guitars and, of course, the signature vibrato and soothing ethereal presence of Jon Beleshko's vocals. Anguish is anticipated mere seconds into each track, shouldering an emotional weight in with each layer. The experimental instrumentation is well-arranged, at times feeling otherworldly, as you constantly lose track of time within the recordings. Last week they offered up "The Skinny Set", a 15-minute, 3 song session completed by band members Jon and Tyler.

Bassist Joel Carlton has this to say on the band:

"Right now we try to write songs with momentum. Either using energy or emotion or a tempo shift or a key change. But 'The Skinny Set' is about getting some live material out into the world in a more intimate setting, I know some of my favourite artists hooked me with sets on NPR's Tiny Desk or through KEXP's live performances. We wanted to create something in that spirit while making it our own."

The duo perform the tracks "Watertight", "Extractor" and "Hokusai" Listen below. - Healthy Phat

Still working on that hot first release.

Abruzzi Spur is Jonathan Beleshko, Stephen Buhler, Tyler Cantwell, Joel Carlton, and Nicholas Mayne.

A 5-piece experimental post-rock outfit from Edmonton, Alberta. Pulling influences from math rock, electronic music and art rock, they create moody, intricate music that aims to explore themes not found in the usual pop landscape.
