"Artist of the Month"

Absent is made up of three fellas in Year 10 at Cranbrook School. Introducing Themba, Nick and Nick. They’re a young band on the up and up, and we suggest you remember these dudes… They may be plastered all over MTV at some point, then you can say “I’m a true fan, man, I was into these guys before anyone even knew who they were.”

How old are you?
Everyone is 15 and there’s three of us.

How long have you been together?
Coming up for 3 years.

What’s one of the best things you’ve done in Absent?
I don’t know the best thing… the best part is people coming to see us and having a mosh… at the smaller gigs security always comes and tells our friends to settle down or leave.

Does your school support you?
Yes. Allows us leave to go play at other schools at lunchtime. Gives us gigs and detentions. That sort of thing.

Is it hard trying to play gigs and get practice when you’re not 18?
Gigs are very hard because most of the real venues are 18+. So we also try and play at school band comps/ school fetes and other under 18 stuff…

How would you describe your style?
Alternative rock

Who are some of your favourite bands/influences?
Block Party, The Arctic Monkeys, The Clash, Nirvana.

Do you have any releases/demos?
Debut EP released last week with 4 original tracks. Had a couple of videos on BaseTV and we're recording some new material.

How and where do you record your stuff?
We've been lucky enough to win recording time at a few competitions we've won. Also beg, borrow and steal what we can. Some recording studios have been really cool to us.

Do you have any gigs coming up?
Next one is 17 June at Bondi Pavilion and a couple in August. Join our mailing list at www.absent.com.au to keep in touch with gigs.
