"Three's the magic number for veteran metal act"

Knoxville Southern metal outfit Absolute Power takes an old-school approach to one of the city's most common genres.

While schoolboy death-metal bands have been springing to life in droves from area garages, most lack the substance of a band like Absolute Power. Unlike the garden-variety teen-metal band that typically contains a minimum of five members to fill out its sound, Absolute Power does it with only three.

The trio claims its name originally came about as a succinct description of its live presentation, but it also sums up the band's satisfaction at the individual control maintained by each member.

"We've all three been involved in previous projects, and learned that what we really wanted was to work together as a group and not follow any one man's agenda," says vocalist/guitarist Kristopher "Whicked" Hawkins. "All three of us have equal input to the creative process. We write a lot about the things that people don't have much respect for anymore, like being strong enough to be yourself, not be fake, and being able to overcome any obstacles in your way. We often use war and adrenaline-injected themes to get our point across."

Absolute Power also distinguishes itself from the clutter of local metal bands by not shying away from melody. Although the group is rooted to its genre by the standard jub-jub metal riffs and guitar solos, the vocals mercifully avoid noteless, dry-heavish screaming and often incorporate the harmonies of bassist/backup vocalist Jason Alley. Perhaps it is this display of legitimate ability that separates Southern metal from other metal subgenres.

"We've pretty much just trimmed the fat," says Alley. "We keep all of the strong riffs and don't use a lot of filler. We intend to get better and heavier, but stay true to the Absolute Power style. We don't plan to bend to a more radio-friendly sound."

As the band begins work on its debut full-length album, the members say their music is meant to be heard live. The density of the songs is even more appreciable when they are seen performed live, coming from such a slim roster, but with the album's eventual release, Absolute Power hopes its recordings measure up to the live show and not the other way around.

"The live show is big, loud and in-your-face," says drummer Mikey Rogers. "You'll witness three guys genuinely having a great time and playing music they've created together. No egos or arrogance, just complete confidence in their material. We are only a three-piece, and we get the job done as good as any and louder than most. We sound like a wall of power. Once you hear the first song, you'll know what you're in for. We practice hard, are very tight and conduct ourselves as professionals."

Discography

Have only a 3-song demo we've recorded ourselves, and are selling at gigs and using for press kit. It is however very good quality which further displays this band's musical talent. Tracked with a Tascam DP-01 recorder and mixed in Cubase, it sounds better than most local studio work.

Take a listen!
