"Metal bands to get crowd headbanging"

When Zelan Buckelew first started setting up shows at Output Music in eighth grade, the townspeople weren't pleased, he said.

"These kids just get together and fight and play devil music and all that ..." Buckelew said about Lincoln City residents' reactions. "It's not like that at all. We're here to have fun."

Fast forward eight years and Buckelew is still setting up shows, which he says both support local bands and give kids something to do, especially in a small coastal town where there isn't much for the younger set.

This Saturday will see another one of those shows, with five metal bands playing what Buckelew says will be an "awesome" show.

"It's an amazing experience," Buckelew said. "I think everybody should see a metal show at least once in their lives."

Metal shows typically exude more energy than other kinds of music, Buckelew said. Yes, there will be mosh pits and hardcore dancing, but he says everybody is there to have a good time.

"If somebody gets knocked down, there's always somebody there to pick them back up," Buckelew said.

This show features bands Jean Grey, I'm a Tornado, Buckelew's band A Cemetery Sky, Arise the Dead and the debut show by a surprise band.

Jean Grey, a four-piece from Eugene, plays "The best music I've ever heard in my life," Buckelew said.

Together since 2004, the group recently released a death metal CD, "Apophis 2029."

"The best way to describe Jean Grey is they're pure brutal," Buckelew said. "I really think they'll be the next Oregon band to make it big."

Also coming from Eugene is I'm a Tornado, a newly formed five-piece from Eugene that plays ambient metal.

"Weird metal," Buckelew said. "It's really good though."

Lincoln County's Arise the Dead - featuring bassist Joey Edwards, drummer Nick Harper and brothers James Gilmer on vocals and Kyle Gilmer on guitar- will add their metal/melodic hardcore sound.

The band released a CD, "To Whom We Owe This Effort," in June and is working on new material with Harper, who recently joined the band.

James Gilmer said they wanted Harper's first show to be at Output.

"It's just the best place to play. The most energetic," Gilmer said.

Arise the Dead and A Cemetery Sky are also gearing up for a local Oregon tour in November.

"They're the nicest guys alive," Buckelew said about Gilmer's band. "We would take bullets in the chest for Arise the Dead."

The local bands try to support each other, Buckelew said.

His metal/thrash group features Buckelew on bass and vocals, Jeff Gregg on main vocals, Bryan Zibovioic on drums and Bob Marthaller on guitar.

They've released one CD, "The Thoughts of...," and hope to push the band as far as they can, Buckelew said.

Rogue Ales endorses the group - "We promote them, and they give us beer," Buckelew said - as does People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

We help promote cruelty-free living and not eating animals and such," said Buckelew, a vegetarian. "I really like our band to have a solid message."

At the same time, they play hardcore metal, which Buckelew says they like for its energy.

"When you hear music, and it makes the hair on your arms stand up, it's a good thing," Buckelew said. "Or it's a bad thing, and you really like it."
