Portsmouth teens rock the music scene
At a time when most teenagers are listening to and playing pop-punk, Acid Reign is covering rock legends like Led Zeppelin and the Allman Brothers Band at bars and night clubs across Newport County.

The band, which formed in the late summer of 2002, is currently made up of Nick Sinclair on lead vocals and guitar, Ian Haas on bass and backup vocals, Zack Rego on drums and Jesse Paiva on guitar. Except for 14-year-old Rego, who attends Portsmouth Middle School, the band members are 17 years old and attend Portsmouth High School.

"People think it's cute when they hear about kids playing in a band, but they're really good," Rego's father Michael said. He added that Acid Reign plays mostly covers, but they also have their own original tracks. In terms of covers, the band has played songs that range from "Rock 'n' Roll" by Led Zeppelin and "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Guns N' Roses.

Playing those two songs means more to the band than just a throwback to two classics. The parents of Acid Reign have joined their children on-stage to take part in the festivities. Michael has played drums on "Rock 'n' Roll" and Lucie, Nick Sinclair's mother, has added vocals on "Sweet Child o' Mine."

These father- and mother-son collaborations have taken place at several Newport area clubs and bars. According to Michael, Acid Reign has played the Newport Blues Cafe, H20, where the band will play Saturday, May 12 at 9 p.m., and numerous other venues. Michael added that the band plays about 20 to 25 shows a year, including both paid gigs and benefit shows.

When asked why the teens chose classic rock over modern rock or any other genre, Michael said he has been wondering about that himself. "I think [it's] because [of] the parents and what they listened to," he said. "When Zack was little, he listened to what I listened to."

Zack, who is the only non-founding member, joined Acid Reign after trying out for the band when they need a drummer. Before that, he played in the band No Clue with Sinclair's younger brother.

Michael said that the other members of the band met while playing sports and befriended one another. Then, he said, the teens played together in the school jazz band and realized they shared similar musical interests.

Bio

Acid Reign is a tight cover band from Portsmouth, RI. The band was started in the late summer of 2002. The current line-up is Nick Sinclair on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Jesse Paiva on Back-up Vocals and Guitar, Ian Haas on Back-up Vocals and Bass, and Zack Rego on the Drums. They are all current students at Portsmouth High School.

Each band member is highly skilled and well-educated on their instrument. AR covers a wide range of "Classic Rock" artists, as well as some modern acts. AR also has written 3 original songs.

They will continue to write more after they dish out some more covers due to requests for songs by Van Halen, Motley Crue, RHCP, Pink Floyd, and many more to count. AR has ties with many local bars and nightclubs and has even played at the well-established and famed Newport Blues Cafe.

Although they are still in their teens, they always leave a club stunned with a combination of "Classic" song selection and musicianship and are always booked for another show. Look for Acid Reign coming to your favorite club soon! Even better, book them at your club!
