Across Mirrors

BandAlternativeMetal

Across Mirrors are a band that strives to fuse it's influences, varying widely from the extremes of progressive music and metal to the more straight ahead rock and pop, into a complex yet accesible form of music.

Biography

ACROSS MIRRORS
Across Mirrors has existed in its current line-up since December 2007 when its members began a period of songwriting in preparation for their first gig at the University of Western Australia Tavern on April 16 2008. The band’s significant fan base can be traced from this performance, helped along by support from UWA’s Distinguished Order Of Metal (DOOM) Club.

Encouraged by their success and their fans’ enthusiasm, Across Mirrors then entered The Castle Hotel’s band competition in June, eventually taking out the first prize: production of 500 copies of a three-track single/EP.

Further experience gained during 2008 includes performances in the National Campus Bands Competition, more shows at The Castle and The Rocket Room, and recording of three original tracks for their EP in November.

Across Mirrors is proud of their first foray into the recording studio – which was a valuable first experience for all five band members. The band recognises it has something great to build on: attention to detail and a greater commitment to rehearsal time will be paramount at their next recording session.

Across Mirrors now rehearses twice a week, using this time to polish an already large catalogue of original songs. Musically, Across Mirrors aims to provide listeners with fresh music, mixing widely varying influences into a homogeneous yet progressive musical experience.

The band is always on the lookout for local gigs to help it hone its live performances and to share its music with an ever-widening fan base.

Across Mirrors attempts to find a nexus for its members’ separate influences, and always strives to do what is right for a particular song, rather than indulge in over-the-top progressive constructions. Influences are wide, and include The Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Karnivool, 65daysofstatic, Meshuggah, Mastodon, Foo Fighters, Unkle, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Mogwai, King Crimson, Thursday, Thrice, and many more.

ACROSS MIRRORS: THE MEMBERS
Lawrence Vincent and David Scaife have been writing songs together since 2003, when both were in Year 10 at high school. The subject matter of their work has matured and broadened over time, capturing times of crisis, times of joy and the many states in between.

Lawrence has been playing guitar for six years, after playing piano, saxophone and clarinet at school. He has since added bass guitar, mandolin, and drums to his repertoire. For Across Mirrors, Lawrence primarily plays mandolin, bass and guitar, often accompanying Dave with backing vocals.

Dave has been singing for Across Mirrors in all its forms since 2003. He has also occasionally played keys. He took vocal lessons in 2008, and both he and Lawrence have seen a speech pathologist with a view to improving their vocal projection.

Tris Mamotte has played guitar for many years in different bands. He joined Across Mirrors in 2006 through a mutual friend and previous bandmate. He started on bass, but his creative style means he can fill a number of guitar-playing roles.

Kevin Kalani is a classical guitarist with a passion for heavy music. With eight years’ training, his technique is well utilised in Across Mirrors. Since joining Across Mirrors in 2007, Kevin has at times shared bass playing duties with Tris, allowing the band to make good use of his fingerstyle chops.

Tim Hodson joined Across Mirrors as drummer in late 2007. Like Lawrence, he is a multi-instrumentalist, playing saxophone and guitar. His energetic style and his John Bonham-esque set up are a feast for fans and a joy for Tim. He has been drumming for five years.

Lyrics

Lizards

Written By: D. Scaife

“The hottest love has the coldest end”
-- Socrates

Passion is a lost art
Driven by a fire
Burning in the pit we choose
Primitive desire

Callous hide and blind ambition
Rapidly concealed
Self-destructive cat and mouse
Nothing is more evil

I can see myself kissing you
Through these reptile eyes
I can see myself in you

Something took you away
Taught you the lure
Cut you up and turned you
Looking for a cure

Jungle spurns compassion
Leaving predator and prey
Inhabited and lying naked
Too afraid to say

I can see myself kissing you
Through these reptile eyes
I can see myself in you

Hunt you down
Draw you in
Claws up and down
Shed the skin
To eat this raw
Jaws interlocked
Hunger subdued
Tail is dropped

Heart of stone wrapped in a pretty piece of flesh
Absorbed in selfish release
Emotionally damaged and perplexed
All the better for the feast
Cold-blooded
Bitter
Broken
Or satisfied

Cold-blooded
Bitter
Broken or satisfied

I can see myself kissing you
Through these reptile eyes
I can see myself in you

I can see myself kissing you
Through these shallow eyes
I can see myself killing you
Unless the lizard dies
Killing you

Celadon

Recognise the kiss goodnight
that kicks you in your sleep
The sand in your hair
memories you’ll throw away but strive to keep
You turn your heart away
eroding external beauty
Careless feet on slippery stones
I fall into the sea

Smoke in my eyes
Blinding me from shaking hands
Cold and thirsty night
Dreaming of the warmer sand
With you I breathe
Light mistaken celadon
But what we’ve lost
Doesn’t change who we’ve become

A single smile returns to me
confirming deeper fears
Only to find the shoulder
doesn’t turn away from tears
A silver bullet
that my brother took for me
What’s inside holds us together
as we fall into the sea

Smoke in my eyes
Blinding me from shaking hands
Cold and thirsty night
Dreaming of the warmer sand
With you I breathe
Light mistaken celadon
But what we’ve lost
Doesn’t change who we’ve become

Mess surrounding everyone
unconsciously we fell
And even if we’ve lost each other
doesn’t mean we lose ourselves
So open the door
and show me all the things you tried to hide
It’s who you are
the light in the darkness
the beauty inside

Tears in my eyes
Blinding me from what remains
See your blue sky
Open hands and broken chains
Now without you
Seemingly a weakened jar
But what we hold
Only strengthens who we are

Void

Written By: L. Vincent

Just when I feel like I’m going where I want to be
You come and crush my paper dreams in a fallacy

Cos what I feel
Has no mass appeal
Your soul to steal
And mine to peel
In the sun

In the black choking gall
In the blood on the wall
In the sigh in the fall
In the voice in my thoughts

And like the roasted carcass from the night before
You burnt me with your ice when you came through the door

It’s not alright
I know it’s spite
You painted night
In the glove of the light
I’m no one

In the scene played for one
In the faults that I’ve done
In what I’ve failed to do
Things I once thought I knew

The broken memories of my mistakes
That fester every time I wake
Reduced to nothing in my eyes
This worthless thing that I despise

As I succumb
To her numbing touch
Like a black choking bile
That wraps around and stifles
A guilt and a shame
Shame that I bear for all time

You make me wish I were dead
Make me wish I could give
Make me wish I could fly
And escape my black bile

And my sigh breaks the silence
And my mind leaves the difference
And I depart from my corporeal self
And I’m gone
