"Holiday Park country rocker ready to ring in the new year"

By Rex Rutkoski
The most important thing that Joe Patrick has learned as a performer, he says, "is to love the music that you play."

If you don't, he adds, "it shows."

Make no mistake about it, this Holiday Park resident loves his energetic country-rock music, and he and his band, Four on the Floor, plan to show it beginning at 9 o'clock tonight, ushering in 2010 at the Elks in Tarentum.

"The guys and I like to play and sing songs that we can relate to," Patrick says, "which means a lot of country music."

The vocalist-musician likes a story when he hears a song. "Most of the songs that we play I can, in some way, relate to, or have done exactly what the song is saying," he says. "I think that's why so many people can relate to country music: a song that touches their life in some way so there is a connection and truth about it."

The artist says there also is a heavy rock influence to his shows. The group also offers some original material.

Patrick says lead guitarist Matt Ross of Apollo has been writing a lot of new country-rock tunes for Four on the Floor. Other members are Todd Brandt, acoustic guitar, of Etna; Adam Quinn, bass, and Mark Anderson, drums, both of Elderton.

"The way I like to explain us is that you are in for an exciting ride with this rocking country band," Patrick says. From the start, he says, it is a high-energy ride through classic country, contemporary country, rock 'n' roll and original material.

"I think we definitely can win over rock fans and all other genres of music lovers, because we have such a diverse background," he says, "and I think that good music is good music, no matter what label you put on it."

Music always has been a big part of Patrick's life. "I was blessed to have been given this gift of voice. I hope that when people come out to a show that they can lose themselves in the music, even if it's only for a couple of hours," he says.

Patrick says that music has brought him many welcome opportunities, including one of his songs, "I'll know When I Get There," winning 10 nights in a row on radio station Y108's New Country Challenge.

After graduating from Plum High School in 1995, he started the Morgan Patrick duo with singer Kevin Morgan of Apollo. Patrick recorded an album in 2002 in Nashville.

"There are a lot of great memories I have from over the years. I've been lucky enough to be an opening act for a lot of headliners," he says. They include: Lonestar, Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels, Clay Walker, Mark Chesnutt, Joe Diffie, Tracy Lawrence, Tracy Byrd, Diamond Rio and Blake Shelton, among others.

"One of the most exciting and memorable shows I've been a part of was when my band opened the bill on the main stage at the Post-Gazette Pavilion. Gretchen Wilson was the headliner," Patrick says. "This is the biggest venue I have ever played, probably the highlight of my career so far."

He and his band hope to make tonight a highlight of the year.

"The best thing about performing on New Year's Eve is that you get to close out the year and ring in a new year with the audience, and that brings a special bond between both us and the people," he says.

It's always an exciting night, he says. "Everyone is out for the party, you tend to get loose because of the excitement involved," Patrick says. "There's always something special going on New Year's Eve. Hopefully, we can be that special something tonight and really make this year over the top."
