"Affictionados - This Is What It Is (album review)"

How can I have missed Affictionados? For you others out there who made that same mistake, I can let you know that it's a producer by the name Carl Nordström who is based in Skåne (south Sweden; editors remark) and he's been producing for about ten years. So how does the music sound? It's hard to describe, almost impossible. But it's very original and extremely well produced. I had a hard time believing he was swedish because I've never heard anything like this coming out of Sweden before. Sometimes yout get the vibe from RJD2, Dj Shadow and Björk - but in a whole new way. This is Affictionados third full length album and it's very promising for future releases. The album contains eight wonderful tracks and according to me it seems as he has a hard time keeping it to just the one genre, something undefined that's very definable in the songs. He allows himself to roam free across the definitions of genres and even if instrumental hiphop feels like the most natural description it's difficult to define the genre and wether or not it's necessary to do so. I'm hoping for more material soon and if I could make a wish it would be to have good swedish rappers (rapping in english) like Sci-Fi or King Chris. Or why not someone interesting rapper or singer from the US? - Kingsize Magazine

"Affictionados"

Affictionados (SE)
Behind the moniker Affictionados hides Malmö resident Carl Nordstöm, who whip jazz, 1990s trip and hip hop, noughties electronica and alternative pop (‘Pickpockets Vow’ in the player) together in a groovy bowl of vinyl scratching goodness with obvious movie soundtrack qualities. He released his eponymous debut in 2009, ‘MMX’ (an album inspired by the streets and districts of Malmö City between 1998 and 2003) in January, and have an EP coming out pretty soon - All Scandinavian / Peter Krogholm

"Affictionados"

Around 1995 Carl Nordström started to play with music software and synths. After experimenting for a while through techno, house, drum n bass, hip hop, he finally found his own sound expression and the road that awaited for him.
Affictionados, like sub-tunnel beats, swept in city noise and that could have been created from the concrete from the big city.

The songs have a common melancholy that may be compared to The Cure dressed as Elvis Costello. A dark, heavy experimenting electronica vs hip hop brings me to the depth of what is expected from a beat maker. Carl has worked through the album “Affictionados” with the production and the arrangements. But the real spin is guest plays from musicians and artists from all over the world, like Kissey Asplund, Séamus, Crippual, Tessa Saxell and Torin Williams.

I’m really turned on with the opening song, “Baby”, with a delayed drum loop that stands out in the the hip hop sampler arena. The songs shift, change and swap strategies; never far away from the main theme, but all the time innovative and lead to
The door of the lounge bar with the song “Always and Always”, considering a more monotone way of walking, to be in the background, sitting in the sofa and the closing time for the bar. But something happens as Kissey Asplund starts to sing about 2:43 in the song. A fresh warm tone that colours the arrangement mustard yellow. She is good! Really good!

What are you working with now?
“Today Affictionados stands for itself like a project where I have worked with a number of different styles, that I can’t name anything else than “beats”. I sample all kind of music I find and that I feel have that extra special, and I put it together into something that I would like to call my own.
Right now, I’m working with a record that’s hopefully finished by the end of the year. Besides that I’m turning records at CAFÈ RASOIR in Malmö with a DJ-crew called OH NO, NO DECKS.”

In my opinion Carl is a fantastic producer that’s ahead of his time. I’m looking forward to what’s being melded together for the years to come. - Jamin @ meadowmusic.se

Bio

Putting words to how I feel and what I think has always been a problem for me even thou I talk alot. I see music as my ultimate way of expression. Using sounds as my palette and the song to be, my canvas. I've come to realize that I mostly like things that are just brought to light. As punk was in the beginning ,or jazz, or even hiphop and dubstep. When people are still in some sort of chock and awe of what it really is and what will come define it as a whole in the end. The youth of a genre is very inspiring to me. Especially if it carries a message. I write and create my music with an approach more comparable to "letting the music lead me" than trying to "lead music". Basically done that ever since I first started to make music when i was about 10. Didn't have a band until I was 13 thou. Started out as a guitarist in a punkband and later fled to computers and samplebased music when i was about 16, basically when so called punk started to get airplay on TV. It happened during my early days of cratedigging, all the "connect-the-dots" of music ended with alot of vinyl and some friend introducing me to the latest hiphop at the time and sampling. 90s hiphop had the same raw creativity punk used to have in the late 70s and early 80s and I that's what attracted me to it. I try not to let my music be affected by time. I also paint alot on the side when I write music. It's nice to create something you can touch and see to balance out the sounds you created. It completes the creative moment.
