Bio

Afrotumbao is an Afro-Colombian urban music band which smoothly combines the traditional music of the Colombian Pacific Coast with elements from jazz, urban music, Cuban percussion sounds ("timba cubana"), dancel and electronic sounds. Playing with the traditional and ancient instruments from the Pacific Coast, such as the " Marimba de Chonta" ("the piano of the rainforest" which comes from the African Balafon), the "bombo" (traditional bass drum) and the "cununo" (tambour drums), these young musicians, originally from the village of Guapi (Cauca, Colombia) located on the Colombian Pacific coast, seek to spice up their show with all the flavor of the Pacific and tell the story of their ancestors, showing at the same time a new and modern Afro-Colombian music.
Compounded of ten musicians, Afrotumbao was born in 2006 in Bogotá, Colombia and is currently managed by the musician and composer Ferney Segura who took part from the beginning of the Colombian musical movement which has defined since 2000 a new Afro-Colombian sound on the national and international scene with emblematic bands such as La Mojarra Eléctrica, Grupo Bahía o Grupo Saboreo. The Marimba is the main instrument of this band and its songs originate from daily life stories from the Pacific region of Colombia, telling authentic stories about key traditional aspects of their culture, such as "arrullos" (hymns of praise), culinary, traditional fishing and agriculture, myths and legends but also how youth live in this region nowadays.
Currently, Afrotumbao has released its first record and it is now working on the production of the second.
