"Music Review"

Politics and music have always bedded together with varying degrees of success. The better the band and their music, the further the message gets. U2 is a perfect example of this. Socially aware, they have been able to blend great music with meaningful lyrics that question, taunt, and challenge the listener while anchoring the messages with memorable hooks and melodies. Politics aren’t always the focal point. There are philosophical, spiritual, and social ills viewpoints as well.

Agency, an Asbury Park, NJ area band, who has been entrenched in the club circuits for several years, and who deliver the same impassioned themes and challenges as their forerunners have (U2), have finally been recorded and the results are quite good.

The first track of the album, “Liberate,” an appropriately titled song for the slightly disguised content, is a politically charged commentary that questions actions and intents. There are songs of human contact (“Regardless”), misplaced priorities (“Speed of Light,” “Trainwreck,” “In The Static”), and political/social mess (“Outside”).

Now I’ve mentioned U2 earlier. For all of their expressive lyrical output, their music remained uncompromisingly notable. Agency’s music is as expressive and urgent as their lyrical messages. The music is anthemic and has more than a snatch of U2 buried in its influences. That’s a very good thing. Without emulating the uniqueness of U2, Agency chooses to create their own decisive and forceful barrage of guitar, drums, and bass with late‘70s styled rock ‘n’ roll as the framework.

If you loved U2 during their Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree era, you’ll feel right at home with Agency’s powerhouse of a debut record. But don’t let me pin this U2 label too tightly on your shirt as Agency uses other influences as well (Cure, Simple Minds) however with a sound that belongs to the band. With a jump out of the gate as well produced as this, there’s no telling what Agency may become in the future. - Matt Rowe
