"Age of Daze is about as straight forward as you can get, and it's working really well for them. So far, 2006 has given us nothing but a genre that is going to burn itself out faster than 1977, and just when you think you've reached the end your rope, you come across Age Of Daze. Not afraid to be labeled a straight up rock 'n' roll band, AOD end up with a musical result that comes across natural, genuine and fun to listen to.
When you end up at the root of any genre you run the risk of falling into a high cheese/lame factor - but AOD successfully manages to stay on the high road and return a cheese rating of 0. They do however return songs that are angry where it counts and as catchy as brushfire.
With a lineup of pros and members of bands that have real road mileage under them, AOD is a "survival of the fittest" band. This usually means you'll end up with four or five guys who are musically on the same page, have an insanely high drive, and a relatively ego free band.
With their most recent recording endeavour having production credits penned by Our Lady Peace guitarist Mike Turner, AOD is on full throttle with no signs of gearing down. New Brunswick rock act Age of Daze searched far and wide to find the right people for their latest recording project- literally. The band's sophomore album was conceived and recorded from one end of the country, to the other.
"We're a genuine east coast band. We all grew up in New Brunswick and we all live here, but I don't think we fit the east coast music model per se," surmises bassist Matt McLaughlin. "Not that there's anything wrong with that, its just that we are not what people expect in an east coast band ." One listen to AOD's latest CD "Hollywood Ending" will affirm that statement. Leaning more towards the polished hard rock sounds of Three Days Grace and Hinder than the roots-oriented sound that defines the regional music scene, the band has no problem admitting their desire for success outside the region.
"We've always had bigger goals for the band," explains vocalist Tim Morrison. "You have to aim high and work towards those goals. We've decided that this is what we want to do, and we are going to do it, no matter what." This determination led the band to Toronto's Pocket Studios and Our Lady Peace founder Mike Turner in the fall of 2005. Turner produced the band's first self-titled EP, a recording that yielded three national radio singles, including the band's Top 75 song "Fuel". "I think the success of the first record, convinced us that we were on the right track," continues Morrison. "It also forced us to learn more about the music business, where we were completely self-managed and financed." The success of the EP also earned the band opening spots for Collective Soul and Juno-nominated rockers Hedley.
Taking what they learned from their first recording experience, the band headed back to Toronto to record at the Pocket this past June, to work with Turner for the second time. "Mike (Turner) has been such a mentor to us, in every aspect of our music career," says McLaughlin. "He's done everything that you can really do in the music business, and been very successful. His advice has been invaluable to us. He's a really good friend of the band."
Always looking to up their game, the band looked to the west coast for the final stages of the recording process. "We knew the songs were there and that they were recorded as best as they could be, so we wanted to make sure that we got the best person available to mix the record", continues Morrison. "We did a gig with Hedley back in the winter and we got to know Tommy Mac (bassist) as a result of that show. He really liked our live show and our tunes, and offered to do whatever he could to help us out." Upon Mac's recommendation the band hooked up with mixer/engineer Dean Maher. "Dean's a younger guy, but he's worked with a lot of big bands… Nickelback, Rise Against, 3 Doors Down and Hedley. We feel fortunate to have him involved." Maher mixed the CD at Hipposonic Studios in Vancouver in August, and the result is an album that can hold its own against any major label release.
"We feel that this time around, we were able to capture the essence of the band. I guess the fans will be the final judge of the music, but we are proud of it, "states McLaughlin. "Now we are ready to get it out there."
