As soon as I walked in, my friend/ photographer’s face broke my heart and I knew that I had made the wrong call trying to fit that nap in. His smile stretched from ear to ear as he told me about the opener. He kept on mentioning how they were way too talented for how young they were. That’s when I looked up at the stage and realized that the guys carrying gear off the stage to make way for the next band literally looked like they were 12 (okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic but, remember, I’m delirious at this point). Judging by the glowing review my buddy gave the band and the amount of merch I saw being worn in the good sized audience, it was clear that I had missed something amazing. Agony Reigns is an Upcoming modern Thrash metal band from the Twin Cities area as described by Bill Hansen, The Metal Evangelist on KFAI's Roar of the Underground radio show. Their music can show influences from Death, Groove, and Melodic styles of Metal which is layered over the prevalent thrash roots. The band originated as a hard rock/metal band which evolved into their current thrash metal state as founding members Matt McGee (Bass and vocals) and Dan Sybrant (Guitar) developed a love for popular thrash bands such as Megadeth and Metallica. Finally with the additions of Jake Schultz (Lead guitar) and Ben Moen (drums) the lineup the band needed was complete.
In November 2016 with the help of Lydia Stark the band's first single "Asphyxiate" was recorded at The Garage in Burnsville. The band's first show was on June 10th, 2017 opening for Sons of Vengeance and from that point on Agony Reigns' kept pushing hard to make a lasting impression in the MN metal scene. Persevering through a harsh name change situation the band re-branded themselves as the currently named Agony Reigns in the process. The well received "Powerhouse Demo" was re-released under the name "II" and has been made available at every live show since. After the band's start as a live act they have been fortunate to open for National level acts Malice and Cage, have been featured on David Ellefson's EMP Underground Artist sampler, as well as performed their first headlining show in February 2018.
With the start of 2018 showing promise for Agony Reigns, they plan to not stop the momentum present. In July they opened for Havok, Jungle Rot, and Extinction A.D. on Havoks Last 2018 headlining tour. They will also be opening for Cane Hill and Doyle in October of 2018. Finally the band is actively recording their debut Death From Within EP which is due for release in the fourth quarter of the year!
