"The 100 best brazilian albums of 2012"

AN AGE OF LOVE - 7th

Duvida? Vai lá.

****

"Dreampop with love". Susana Bragatto and Zé Ruivo gather references from their fertile dreamlike universe on ailaika music. Retrofuturism, books for children, roadtrips, eighties', japanese lullabies, brandy-and-lemon, vintage synths, lazy cats, smooth psychedelias, cadillacs. But it's the couple's love in real life that bounds together all the songs from their second album.
'An age of love' was a collaboration between ailaika and brazilian producer Apollo9, and includes an unusual guest: the unforgettable brazilian romantic singer Odair José on the track 'Tristinha', a mambo-chanson of ladies-that-cry-for-love.
The brazilian artist Mauricio Pierro was responsible for the beautiful album artwork, with ice-cream, high-heels, cowboys and many, many little birds. Play 'Blue Maggot' for a shock on the dancefloor and listen to 'Lick my Body' while on the shower. An amusing and fun record, irresistible. Let it play all day long, without getting tired of it. Don't you believe it? Just go and listen. - embrulhador.com

Bio

*ailaika* is luv.
*ailaika* is synthfantasy. retrofuture. my grandma.

Currently living in London, the brazilian dreampop duo started making music back in 2009, with their first independent EP *leveleve*.

Four years later, Susana Bragatto (voice/samplers) and Zé Ruivo (keyboards/programming) release their passion for synthesizers, 80's pop, surreal imagery and many voice effects with their second album, *an age of love*.

On 2013, *an age of love* was elected the 7th best brazilian album release of 2012 by embrulhador.com, on a top 100 chart that included new and well-known artists such as Céu, Caetano, Bossacucanova and others (http://www.embrulhador.com/2013/01/Os100melhores2012.html). Plus, it was cited as one of the five best national albums of the year by the chief editor of Showlivre, the biggest music site of Brasil (http://msn.showlivre.com.br/home/itemblog/3981/33444?link=54.html).

The album was a co-work with the São Paulo producer Apollo9, who's already assisted artists such as Rita Lee, Otto, Cibelle and N.A.S.A.It was recorded on the S.A. Plant Studio, in São Paulo, run by Apollo9 and the american producer Roy Cicala (Record Plant Studios, NY).

Synthpop, dreampop and strange lyrics on cadillacs, love and squirrels fill in the songs. Vintage mixing and recording equipment are present all over the album, like eighties’ synths, an oberheim drum machine (on “Squirrel Dance”), a harmonium organ (“Blue Maggot”) and a lovely omnichord, an early eighties’ electronic autoharp (on "Lazy Cat" and "Lick my Body").

João Parahyba (Trio Mocotó, Jorge Ben, Suba), Eric Budney (bass and acoustic bass - Jair Oliveira, Luciana Mello) and James Müller (Funk como Le Gusta) are some of the musicians who contributed on this project.

The legendary brazilian singer Odair José is the special guest on the mambo-chanson "Tristinha”.
