"Aimie's Way"

“We’re only human,” Amie Laws sings in her ballad Only Human, the title track of her debut CD.

“I am only one.”

She’s only one emerging singer/songwriter from Salmon Arm, but tries to make a difference in the world with her music.

“I wanted to help people deal with life,” she said. “That’s what music means to me.”

Laws walks the walk with her Rock 4 MS Tour, which hits Pogue Mahone June 1 with Vancouver indie band Columbia.

“I wanted to do it because my stepfather was diagnosed (with multiple sclerosis) and I wanted to do something to help,” Laws said from Salmon Arm, which she still calls home.

“We’re talking about someone who is supposed to be a tough person but who hates feeling like a burden on anybody. It’s really close to my heart. I hope it can raise funds for a cure, and that is coming close.”

While the tour bears a rock handle, Laws’ style encompasses alternative and roots as well. She often writes and sings of pathos, drawing comparisons to Alanis Morrissette and Sheryl Crow, but remains modest about her output.

“I’m fairly new; I’ve only been promoting my music for the last year and a half,” she said. “I really have no idea what I’m doing. I’m doing it day by day. It’s a challenge. I’m learning everything as I go.”

Laws released her EP, The Beginnings, in 2008, but picked up momentum last August with release of her debut recording. She credits guitarist Cam Crouch with giving her the backing to push on.

“I was working at Panago Pizza for almost a full year, and to my amazement, one of my co-workers was an amazing guitar player,” she explained. “We just kind of hit it off musically, even if we didn’t hit it off at work.”

They did a gig with the Armstrong-based rock band Cold Driven (which plays at Pogue Mahone June 23, promoting their third EP, The Wicked Side of Me), recorded a few songs and released it as Only Human. She also had a chance to play for the crowds at Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, her first time on site.

“The amount of recognition I’ve gotten from music and other media is almost overwhelming in a way. I didn’t think it would be as big a deal as it turned out to be.

“It was really reassuring to have people who had more experience were really liking what I was doing.”

Only Human wasn’t written for the MS Tour, but it could have been. The lyrics rise from a pit of despair to appeal for compassion on the basis of common experience.

“It’s an important song because it says a lot of things a lot of people might not want to talk about,” she said. “Growing up, music was one of the things I could rely on to heal, to help get through things.”

In the case of her stepfather, she thought she could help best by lending her music to the search for a cure. Due to MS, a degenerative disease that affects the central nervous system, her stepfather was unable to work at one point due to loss of vision and motor functioning. His condition has improved, though.

“I honestly think he’s one of the lucky ones. If you didn’t know him, you wouldn’t know he has MS.”

While living in Powell River, Laws posted her fundraising plan on Facebook and was astonish at how much support rallied behind the idea in her hometown. That support built the tour into 11 dates in nine cities across B.C. Her heart remains with rural life.

“I don’t want to be in the city as much as I should be,” she said. “I’m a small-town girl.”

Laws’ tour band includes James Reid (lead guitar), Jesse Bernardin (bass) and Shawn Edwards (drums). She’ll also do some solo shows with some backing by guitarist Ian Hill, her teacher at Bluewater Music in Salmon Arm, and her friend Nicole Comis.

"Aimie Laws completes tour successfully"

I was talking with this singer songwriter at the Princeton Pub after her performance and she was happy and full of energy, “we crashed our van today” she said nervously, “but we are going to keep doing the tour, we just have two more gigs and I have already raised double of what I was expecting so I am very happy”. Laws, a Salmon Arm native, also counted with the support of Vancouver band Columbia, “I asked them to help me with one night and they asked me if they could do the whole tour, I said yeah!”. Nine gigs later the balance is positive. Keep reading the press release.

When a family member was diagnosed with Multiples Sclerosis, Salmon Arm, BC based singer songwriter Aimie Laws knew she had to do something to help. On May 25th she kicked off her Rock for MS Tour to help raise awareness and funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. After a nine city tour of Bristish Columbia, Aimie Laws along with contributing artists Columbia, Versus The Nothing, Further More, Immaculate, Sasha Lewis, Grim Hymn and the Horrors, Shannon Beth Ireland, Ian Hill and Nicole Comis, she raised $3,645.57 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. All funds raised was from sales of Aimie’s ONLY HUMAN album and merchandise, as well as donations collected between May 25th and June 4th.

“I am so proud of the artists that joined me on this journey… They all did it for the cause… And didn’t care about their own money issues. The support we received from the people we met, and the venues we played was remarkable. I know we accomplished a lot on this tour… The fact that we tripled what I had originally hoped to raise is more than I ever could of hoped to achieve. Education, friends, and some one to make the first step is all we really need these days…Rock 4 MS and the people that we touched and made friends with along the way reminded me of that. It was a very inspiring journey.” comments Aimie Laws. - Oswaldo Perez Cabrera - Van Music

"ROCK 4 MS STOPS IN VERNON"

"I attended the Vernon stop on Aimie Laws’ Rock 4 MS Tour to shoot some photos and enjoy some fantastic music. The show was at Sneakers Sports Bar, always a swell spot for some live 19+ shows, and the turn out was fantastic. Ben Stewart from Richard Rachael Promotions helped make the show a success and with the turnout as it was, raised a good chunk of coin for MS research. I managed to get there in time to see Immaculate, a fantastic Okanagan hip-hop artist, Aimie Laws, Salmon Arm rocker, and Versus the Nothing, Vancouver bangers, all put on a fantastic show." - Nathan Cail - Awesome Okanagan

"CD Review: Aimie Laws - Only Human"

From the first strum on the first song, The Easiest Thing, I was hooked on British Columbia’s Aimie Laws. Light, pop feel. Good bouncy guitar. Slower folky sound on Hello Goodbye until the chorus kicks in and picks up to a nice painful lovin’ tune.

Lyrically, Laws give us what we can relate to, what we all need to hear, reassurance that we will go on, we will survive all even though as the title states, we are, "Only Human." The title cut, opens with a nice mellow bent guitar sound reminiscent of some of our favorites from the psychedelic seventies and winds its way to a poetic proclamation that "at the end of the day, we’re all here." Powerful vocals on Runaway Train, very well suited to the lyrics and mood. In The End is outstanding, poppy, fun guitar and wise beyond her years with lines like,
". . . life will make sense in the end." Take It Away is the heavy; more grind with a heavier mood and sound as Laws proves that she can rock as well as she can soothe. Wash Away is more incredibly beautiful guitar perfectly matched with Laws’ amazing vocals, "sometimes rain falls from grace to wash away your pain in the rain".

Strong, sure of herself, Laws is up for the ride. Can we come along? You bet! This is a great CD (and this is her debut!), get the download and come along with Aimie Laws.
