Bio

AJA is a leading exponent of performance poetry in the Caribbean. He fuses poetry with music – from jazz to various Caribbean rhythms, including calypso, soca, reggae and salsa, to create a unique sound. He performs with his own band and has taken the art form to the international stage.

A feature of AJA’s performance is the intensity on stage. The use of Caribbean rhythms that are rooted in the region’s African heritage is captivating. Additionally, his lyrical content with heart-wrenching images is engaging. As a result, his concerts have been described as “edutainment”.

From his emergence as a poet, AJA has been focusing on many of the world’s problems such as war, peace and the abuse of women and children. This persistency was rewarded in October 2003 when he was made a UNDP Spokesperson on Peace and Poverty Eradication for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

Today AJA is not only recognized as one of Barbados and the Caribbean’s prominent performing artistes, but also as a humanitarian. He is a HIV/AIDS Champion for the HIV-AIDS Commission of Barbados; a Goodwill Ambassador for the Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA); and he was recently selected as one of the international celebrity campaigners for the Oxfam’s “Make Trade Fair” Campaign.

In 2003 AJA launched the International Foundation for Peace and Poverty Eradication (ifppe). Through the ifppe, he has embarked upon an international campaign against war and poverty and to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

A feature of this campaign is the AJA Music 4 Life Tour. Through the tour he visits schools to talk about violence, poverty and HIV/AIDS. The tour ends with AJA teaming up with artistes from the respective country to perform in concert.

To date AJA has produced six CDs and his poems have also been internationally published.
