A.J. Jamal Doesn’t Curse When He Finds Bacon In His Soup

Anyone remember watching In Living Color? If so, you remember A.J. Jamal, who got his big break after replacing Keenen Ivory Wayans. Jamal now rests his funny bones at Comedy Central.
Removing potty mouths from the stage, A.J. says he likes to keep his show clean and doesn’t curse at all when he’s not performing. He also keeps his body clean and is a vegan.
“I could have been a hippie,” said Jamal. “I’m one of those spiritual walking beings. I’ve never cursed offstage. I’ve never cursed, never tasted alcohol and been a vegan almost all my life. Never tried drugs. It’s just part of my nature. Now my mama, she cussed up a storm.”
Never cursed offstage? C’mon, A.J. Not even when you order the potato soup and find out the menu leaves off the key ingredient of BACON in it? You just politely tell the staff to bring you something else?
A stronger man than most will be.

Cleveland's `King of Clean' A.J. Jamal set for Improv: Laugh Track

Homecoming:Cleveland native A.J. Jamal, the self proclaimed "King of Clean," returns home to headline at the Improv. "I finally get to come back and it's not a death I'm coming back for," said Jamal. "I've got about a thousand people to call."
Physical and funny, the former cast member of Fox's groundbreaking "In Living Color" grew up in Glenville and attended Collinwood High School and Kent State University, playing football there. He left grad school at Cleveland State to work as an engineer for IBM, then bagged that for the stage so long ago he lists an appearance on "The Arsenio Hall Show" among his credits.
He's better at this job than he was at his first, delivering The Plain Dealer.
"I had 110 customers when I started, when I got done I had 33," he said. "They'd tell me, 'You know your not supposed to be delivering your paper after The Press, that's an afternoon paper.' "
Jamal arrived in Cleveland from his home in L.A. late Monday night and by Tuesday morning was chauffeuring his mom, who lives in Warrensville Heights, to the doctor's office.
"I forgot how moms are. She said she had to run back in the house and use the bathroom. That took about four hours," he said, laughing heartily. "I went in four times to check if she was OK, but that's just how old people move."
Jamal performs at 8 p.m. Thursday ($16), 8 and 10:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday ($18) and 7 p.m. Sunday ($16) at the Improv inside the Powerhouse, 2000 Sycamore St., in Cleveland's Flats. Call 216-696-4677.

A.J. JAMAL
Being funny comes easy for A.J. Jamal. A product of the Cleveland, Ohio comic scene, A.J. knew he was destined for this particular aspect of show business. Growing up he was always armed with a technique for making people laugh at the drop of a dime. There is no mistake that there was already a master plan created for him to use his talents for this one special purpose.
A.J. Jamals success to date is the proven results of many years of hard work. Having served as an engineer for IBM for many years, he learned to take a unique and analytical approach to comedy. A.J. was born to make people laugh and he is a natural at doing so. Being the self proclaimed King Of Clean , A.J. is best known for his various television appearances on: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, HBOs Comic Relief , Show Time at the Apollo and the Ace Award winning television series, Comic Justice on Comedy Central. In fact, most people would remember his earlier longtime stint on the critically acclaimed hit show In Living Color in which he was famous for his funny parodies alongside the likes of Jamie Fox and Jim Carrey.
