"Straight Talk with Comedian A.J. Johnson"

A Chat With The Outrageously Funny Comdian-Actor A.J. Johnson

A.J. Johnson is genuinely funny! Soaring to stardom when he starred as E.Z.E. in House Party 1 & 2, Johnson’s film career has included roles in box office hits like I Got The Hookup, The Player’s Club, How To Be A Player, B.A.P.S, Friday, Menace To Society, The Great White Hype, O, Lethal Weapon, Panthers and Hot Boyz. His television credits include The Twilight Zone, Malcolm & Eddie, The Jamie Foxx Show, Moesha, Martin, South Central and popular shows like BET’s Comic View and HBO’s Def Jam. Johnson has a unique style of humor and is considered by his peers as one of the top comedians in the business. He is delightfully entertaining, projecting social injustices through his acting. Johnson has also made a name for himself in theatre, appearing in popular stage plays such as Momma I’m Sorry and All Men Can’t Be Dogs.

RI: A.J, how are you doing?

A.J: I’m doing well.

RI: Where did you grow up?

A.J: Compton.

RI: What was it like growing up in Compton?

A.J: Scary. [Laughing] People always say bad things about Compton. It’s really crazy because Compton is no different from many other places.

RI: Like the O’ Jays said in the song “the world is a ghetto.”

[Laughing]

RI: How did you get started on the comedy scene?

A.J: What happened, I was invited by the late Robin Harris to crack some jokes at the Ramada Hotel where he was hosting comedy night. I went and got booed right off the stage. [Laughing]

RI: Audiences can be tough on new comics.

A.J: No joke. They booed the hell out of me. I thought it was a dream and that I would go home and wake up. It was real life. They didn’t just boo me off the stage they booed me out of the whole building. [Laugh] From there, I started hosting the talent show. The second year I did Def Comedy Jam. It was my first time on stage telling jokes. The jokes were coming back to back, and it felt good. A month or two later, I did Friday Night Lights at the Apollo. That was during the time when the old lady used to sit on the front row near the stage.

RI: I remember.

A.J: It was crazy. Everybody knew not to talk about the old lady. She sat in the same seat every time. Sinbad hosted the show that night. This one comedian went out and cracked on the old lady. Bad choice. Immediately the audience started booing him. I was backstage laughing my tail off. He was a professional, and I was an amateur. They booed him.

RI: Where you the kid who cracked jokes in school?

A.J: Yes. I was a class clown. I think I was born to be a class clown. It was fun making people laugh.

RI: Somewhere along the line you got into acting. Go ahead and tell us about that.

A.J: My father was a professional stuntman. He used to take my siblings and I to work as extras on the set. I got an agent and started going out to auditions. I connected with Ice Cube and did The Players Club and Friday. Ice Cube wanted to do Next Friday, but I told him to leave the movie alone. I felt it was a classic. He planned the movie anyway. I was supposed be in it but someone else was cast.

RI: Did you two have some sort of fall out?

A.J: Absolutely not. Cube is cool with me. I shot that movie nearly 15 years ago, and kids 13 and 14 years old still recognize me.

RI: What was it like on the set of The Players Club working with beauties like Lisa Raye, Monica Calhoun, Chrystale Wilson and Tracey Cherelle Jones?

A.J: It was cool. Charlie Murphy and I were having a ball. I didn’t know about him until we did the movie together. I made a joke about him looking like Eddie Murphy. He said that he was Eddie’s brother. [Laughing] I didn’t believe him at first. I thought he was joking.

RI: You were in Robert Townsend’s B*A*P*S with Halle Berry, Martin Landau, Natalie Deselle, Bernie Mac and Faizon Love around the same time, weren’t you?

A.J: Yes. I did B*A*P*S and Friday back to back. After that, I went on the road doing stage plays and comedy tours.

RI: Do you love the stage more than doing films?

A.J: I really enjoy doing plays and stand up. There are no double takes or cuts on the stage. It’s straight acting before a live audience. I love stand-up comedy and the stage. I don’t like driving from Corona to Los Angeles for auditions. [Laugh] Most of the movies I was cast in happened on the spot. One time a director stopped me while filming at the airport. He said he would pay me $1,000 to do a couple of jokes on the set. It wasn’t bad for five or six jokes.

[Laughing]

RI: Any new projects in the works?

A.J: I’m supposed begin working on a new Tyler Perry production in January. I’m waiting on the confirmation call now.

RI: Are you married?

A.J: My wife’s name is Lexis. We have 5 kids (Antoinette, La - raw image magazine

"AJ JOHNSON"

A J Johnson

In the recent years, audience is more interested in comedy shows than serious dramas and plays. Comedy, in its real term, arouses laughter and fun. In plays or in film shows, comedy is entertained as one of the most important items. So, it is natural to use comedy in the American shows. A J Johnson is one of such comic actors who gained popularity in course of his acting career. He, though was a comedian, could act according to the situation

He started with some of the films, which made high success in the history of the comedy. Anthony Johnson, who is an Afro- American actor and comedian, started his career in the early 1990s. This was his first film, which is known as the House Party. A J Johnson after this comedian role carried on his career in the urban films. Here he projected the social injustice through his acting. The House Party is a comedy film released by New Line Cinema. First few days the film attracted crowd but with the role becoming type and rigid, people found it difficult to understand.

The film was written and directed by Reginald Hudlin as his Harvard University film school thesis. The thesis was a great success, which portrayed the leading role of his film as a comic character. House Party debuted at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival in January, where it won two awards in the dramatic category. The story revolves a house party, which was thrown by Play who invited Kid. Kid was grounded by his father and has to find a way to sneak out of the house and attend the party. The story itself was a funny one. A J Johnson In tells that he also worked in Dr. Dre's video Dre Day. It is a single music by Dr.Dre, which was released in 1993. It failed to match the popularity of Dre's earlier hit, Nuthin But a G Thang. His creation is a parody of rapper Eazy-E. He also appeared in the classics of 1995 Los Angeles based film Friday as Ezal. Wikipedia
