"Bluesbunny Album Review (5/5)"

I suppose it had to happen. It has been a long search but finally a Glasgow rock band with some imagination has stepped up and been counted. Stepped up, been counted and made themselves ready to be a global contender at that. As I’m found of a metaphor or two I’ll just say that A Joker’s Rage’s self titled album packs quite a punch.

Having caught them live last year, I had been expecting a sort of high speed run along the road popularised by Rage Against the Machine and there is still an element of that directional decision to be found here but there is now so much more to enjoy and respect for that matter. Hell, you even get a bit of Police style faux reggae thrown in (“Chase”) amongst the hard as nails street rock styling of “Neighbourhood Watch” (“…gotta get the hell out of Springburn”) and the pummelling stadium rock of “Elegant War”.

Of course, such things don’t just happen. You can’t just stick a compass on to a band and hope they all go in the right direction as it’s all in the quality of the ingredients. The songs here are as big as they should be for an aspiring rock band and the performances likewise combine pomp, power and precision. Zakk Taylor holds centre stage like he was born for it and the fiery fingers of Gary Johnstone once again mark him as one of the most adventurous and talented guitarists in this genre. Needless to say, you will feel an overwhelming urge to turn the volume right up.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some air guitar to play. - Bluesbunny

"The Beat Surrender Album Review (5/5)"

This may be a Glasgow based band but with a massive (literally) Yorkshire presence in the form of Zakk Taylor the lead singer. Added to that the fact that this debut album was recorded in just two weeks at Soundworks in Leeds in May 2010 with Will Jackson taking the production, previously he has worked with some great Yorkshire bans such as The Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs I think we can give them honorary Yorkshire citizenship.

I have to admit that I was just a little bit excited when Kev asked me if I fancied doing this review since I have been a little quiet on the reviewing front of late. Plus even though over the years I have seen plenty of bands some totally forgettable that didn’t apply to A Joker's Rage, caught them supporting Talk To Angels back in 2009, loved them at the time but wasn’t 100% sure if the massive stage presence would transfer into a studio WRONG!!

Loved the start of the opening track Disc-Over, reminded me of my favourite Leeds band The Music. Lingering guitar and vocals blended with fast rock, just a perfect opening track, really sets the scene nicely.

Chase is fast furious rock and roll just as it should be with weird blend of occasional ska/reggae, a bit odd but strangely captivating. Neighbourhood Watch, great lyrics took me back the rock and roll roots I love. When you hear this you immediately know this is going to a massive number live, especially on home soil of Glasgow, never hurts to mention your home town in the lyrics!!

I also loved the lyrics on When in Rome, they seem very heartfelt and a reflection of the world we live in, a bit slower but equally good. Next up Step Aside, very slow orchestrated intro, very anthemia but this more than the other tracks lost me as it just seems to jump around in styles too much to flow into a track I would want to listen to over and over.

The album gets back on track with Elegant War; I love to hear a drum intro sets you up knowing what’s to come. Epiphany has an amazing guitar intro, here we have a band that make the most of everyone’s talents from drums to guitars to amazing vocals, and this time the guitar lifts this track from ordinary to amazing.

Screaming With The Lights Out was my favourite track when I saw them at The Cockpit, perhaps not my absolute favourite on the album but not far off. Hey Mister was another stand out track which on the album may come across as the token novelty track; very burlesque, absolute success loved it.

Last track Punch or Judy, definitely packs a punch! Loud, fast mental rock combined with very laid back to screaming vocals. So the album ends as it starts on a high note.

It’s easy to spot the likeness and influences of other bands in this offering such as Linkin Park, Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine but this band seem to take all the influences and bring something totally original, fresh and exciting. So many stand out tracks it would be hard to pick out a definite favourite but a couple would be the opening track Disc-Over, even listening in a traffic jam on a miserable January evening made me want to dance around (no wonder I get strange looks), loved Epiphany for the excellent guitars and Hey Mister for its sheer quirkiness.

Overall a brilliant debut album which really does deserve some national air play. A Joker's Rage brilliant live and with this album they proof they have it all, fantastic. - The Beat Surrender

"La Grosse Radio's A Joker's Rage Album Review"

A JOKER'S RAGE - A MUSICAL CRUSH

There are annoying bands, and others that we like. I know that and was a little bit afraid when I put the CD on…

We met the Scottish band A Joker’s Rage when they came to Paris for the TIME Event, the Fair for the Indie Music. We kept in touch, and since that day, the awesome Chase is one of the biggest hit on La Grosse Radio.

They are back with their first 10-tracks album, available only for just £5.

Rock is to A Joker’s Rage what alcohol is to Whisky: obligatory but made with love.

A Joker’s Rage is 45% of pure rock music, both the music and the attitude. But Zakk and his friends are more than what they want us to believe behind their drunk and crazy image. Their minds and personalities are on every track of the album: unpredictable, funny, tender and smart.

You decide what the 55 other percent are …

When we listen to one song, we think that we know the band, that we know what kind of music they do, and … NO: break, new tempo, a little bit of ska, some funk notes, groovy music, back to punk and noisy music, and a soft ballade …

And what about Zakk’s voice? He’s able to sing with a sweet voice, but can also add, without a problem, some hip-hop tunes, chant or rapping.

We are pretty sure that those 4 guys hate labels so much that they do their best to be un-labeled. Sorry but, we are so formatted by the medias that it’s hard for us to understand a thing like that.

Frankly, I think that A Joker’s Rage is an honest band in what they do. The boys are music & beer friends, but when they start a song, what we hear is the perfect addition of their talent and contagious madness.

In conclusion, A Joker’s Rage first album is a record that blows on the dead leafs, that bring a malt taste to the autumn wind, and so, warms us up.

"A JOKER'S RAGE ROCK GLASGOW"

Now, if there is one thing that a real rock band needs, it is a good front man. A Joker's Rage had just that and the theatrical Zakky Boy T soon dragged the audience back to life. Their hewn from solid steel rock meets rap sound followed in the footsteps of Rage Against The Machine - in fact their encore was a Rage Against The Machine song - but what made them really special was the fiery guitar of Gary Johnstone. There are times when you hear a guitarist and all you want is to learn to play just like him. Tonight was such an occasion. A Joker's Rage is a band that I'd like to see again. - The Blues Bunny

"THE JOKER STORMS LEEDS!"

Next up were A Jokers Rage, I’d read up on them before the gig but nothing could have prepared me for the band. Loved how they came on, very anthemic lots of lights and mist and wow the lead singer just knocks you for six. The band may be Glasgow based but the singer is a Yorkshire lad, Zak’s presence just fills the stage, a big lad but boy he can move. A real rock band just how they used to be.

For me highlights were Hey Mister and the second track which I thought he called Illegal Watch (doubt this is right but it’s what I thought I heard). Also liked Screaming With The Lights Out out but the band apparently preferred Chase.

The sound is along the lines of Linkin Park, rock with rap but with a great touch of dancability, for me a bit like the Leeds band The Music. I am happy to say I am now a convert to this band can’t wait to see them again and from the noise and reaction of the crowd tonight I’m not the only one in Leeds. - The Beat Surrender

Bio

One of the fastest growing bands in the north of England with fans now travelling from far and wide, A Joker's Rage, fronted by clown-in-chief Zakk Taylor, have a winning mix of powerhouse rock, hugely memorable tunes and a delivery not unlike being trampled by a herd of dinosaurs with their haemorrhoids on fire.
One minute the crowd's moshing, the next they're headbanging. Give it five minutes and they're bouncing up and down. Take your eye off 'em for a second and next you know the whole heaving mass is waving their arms and singing along. Ah yes . it's called having a bloody good time.
It's a party, it's celebration of great music, IT'S A PROPER ROCK SHOW and, let's be honest, when did you last see one of those when you weren't a mile from the stage and paying fifty quid for the privilege. You might have caught them blowing bigger and 'better' bands off stage, or storming a 2000 crowd stealing the show from The Darkness. Whatever, you're either a convert or about to be.
