Bio

Alana Amram hails from upstate New York, Brooklyn and currently Los Angeles. She was a born touring around the country with her musical family. She learned guitar and traditional songs around campfires and the touring musicians crashing on the couch at their family farm. As a teenager, she wrote zones, collected LPs and hid out in clubs and D.I.Y. spaces in New York City. She attended SUNY Purchase College to pursue filmmaking but left to play bass, record and tour with other bands.

She started playing around New York and Brooklyn in 2006. The Fader wrote: "I have a real good feeling that we’ll all be seeing a lot more of this up and coming star. The next time you go see Lucinda or Gillian on tour, you might see Amram filling in an opening slot." She released her first solo recordings on a 7? on the punk label Noiseville. Her demos led to an EP release on Zealous records in 2008. She formed the band The Rough Gems. They headed down to SXSW and started touring regionally.

Amram released PAINTED LADY in 2010. Produced, mixed and engineered by Jesse Lauter, the record featured members of Dungen, Vetiver, Low Anthem, Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger and her father David Amram. She toured throughout America on the release.

As a follow up in 2011, Amram payed tribute to one of her heroes. VINCE MARTIN, often known as FRED NEIL's singing partner, had a rich catalog of songs spanning his 60 plus year career. To coincide with a documentary about Martin's life, Kingswood Records/ Ezzie Films released the Rough Gems collection of classic and previously unrecorded versions of his songs. Producers Mark Sebastian and Jesse Lauter came together to help curate the critically acclaimed SNOW SHADOWS: SONGS OF VINCE MARTIN. It features lush string arrangements by VAN DYKE PARKS. JOHN SEBASTIAN (LOVIN' SPOONFUL) lends his iconic harmonica and baritone guitar.

In early 2013 Amram released a SPLIT 7? with INVISIBLE FAMILIARS a.k.a. JARED SAMUEL (PLASTIC ONO BAND) for the song MOTORBIKE in early 2013.

The 4th record SPRING RIVER will be released in late 2013. It features Alana’s longtime dynamic band, THE ROUGH GEMS – pedal steel virtuoso Philip Sterk, drummer/ percussionist Taylor Floreth, bassist/ singer James Preston and guest guitar player Scott Metzger.

Amram has played along side with Pete Seeger, Peter Rowan, Abigail Washburn, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, and many many others. Her music has been featured in ads for Stetson, the web series the “The Actress”, and in several independent films. Alana is also a filmmaker and most recently directed a short documentary called PORTAL TO POWER. She has played bass in LIGHTS (Drag City), CLIFFIE SWAN, VOLUPTUOUS HORROR OF KAREN BLACK, ANIMAL CANNIBAL TRIBE, SOPHIA KNAPP, THE FAME and BLUE SPARKS.
