"Ma Ra Malai: Albatross Album Review"

(Alternative Rock band, Albatross has released their 4th studio album Ma Ra Malai on March 29, 2014. The new album, more than meets the expectation set by their previous albums. Being one of the most recognized band in the country, Albatross have delivered with their new album setting a new standard not just for themselves but for all other rock bands in Nepal).

The album starts with the album-titled track, Ma Ra Malai. It truly captures the essence of the album. Through fetching philosophical lyrics and exquisite musical composition, the track should appeal to music fans across the country. One can easy expect the delicate and profound nature of tracks that are impending along the way through this track,

The next track, Gari Khana Deu, is a wonderful rock experience. Live and Let Live.

The third track of this album is a slow rock song which is completely different from rest of the tracks. Bhool, unswervingly appeals to one’s soul. I personally caution you guys not to listen to this track when inebriated. It will sting and leave a blistering effect. The Narayan Gopaesque lyrical composition and perfectly synchronized music gives this track the power to beguile the audiences of all age groups.

Aadhar, epitomizes song writing in this album. If Joe Strummer and Narayan Gopal were to have collaborated then this track should have been the conclusion. It is aggressive and meaningful. I would say it is a ruthless poem by a libertine author. It also has a heavy metal element to it which makes this song, a prodigious experience.

Next track, Manav Nai Danav, depicts the mass masquerade of our society. There is a folk rock element to this track.

The fifth track, Afanai Sansar Mai Kina is very sprightly. One can’t see a reason as to why it cannot be the new anthem for progressive issues pertaining to women. The music just frolics its way into the mind. It just caper cuts and banters us men. Again, the song writing reeks of awesomeness.

Gari Khana Deu II is all about rock. The track has a great start to it. It is one of those pouty track without which a rock album is always incomplete.

“Ma bhanda yaha koi janne chaina, manne chaina……….malai gari khana deu”.

The last track, Sagar, depicts the wonderful musical journey that this album is. What better than to end the album than with a track with a splendid guitar solo. This track is pure rock and more songs like this one needs to be composed. It’s one of those pleasant song that you always end up putting on your device and listen to with your casual flits and nods.

Great musical composition, majestic song-writing and precise drumming is ubiquitous. The album has put up an applaudable effort which targets contemporary Nepalese culture, youth aggression, dejection and masquerades that has been defining our generation for some time now. - Llord Sauron

"Albatross releases it's forth album titled "Ma Ra Malai""

Albatross, the Nepali band that is in the rock scene for more than a decade, has released its fourth album named "Ma ra Malai" with a gig on March 29 at Tangal. During an era in middle of the decade, the band used to have its performance in almost all concerts happening in Kathmandu. They have even performed in many countries: UK, US, India, Australia and more. With the vocal resembling Alternative band Incubus, poetic songs and hard energetic melody, Albatross is an established name in rockmandu from their popular songs like Hell's kitchen, Farki Farki, Timi Bhane, Khaseka Tara, Abhiman and more.
The new album consists of 8 songs: Ma ra Malai, Gari Khana Deu, Bhool, Adhar, Manav nai Danav, Afnai Sansar ma kina, Gari Khana deu part II and sagar. Out of which, title track has been released and is going good in the radio, topping the current chart. They have even released a medley of the songs from the album with which I have found the second song "Gari Khana deu I" as my another favorite, till I listen the whole songs after buying. - RDMAN

"Albatross vents frustration"

HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE KATHMANDU:
The five musicians were on the stage of Moksh ready for the eager crowd with their new songs. Avaya Siddhi Bajracharya grooved behind the bass. Sunny Manandhar held his guitar in style while Kismat D Shrestha sat to rock the drum set. And Shirish Dali with guitar took over the microphone.

“We will be playing the songs as it is in the album chronologically from track one to track eight. We are going to create an experience of listening to a CD at home,” Bajracharya remarked. Then eight songs starting from Ma Ra Malai, Gari Khana Deu, Bhool, Aadhar, Manav Nai Danav, Afnai Sansar Ma Kina, Gari Khana Deu II and Sagar unravelled.

On March 25, the band launched their fourth studio album — Ma Ra Malai while performing the songs from the album back-to-back. The album that took a little over a year to make, is an effort to find a style of music that truly defines the band. And the sound of Ma Ra Malai was progressive alternative rock. Among all the songs Bhool and Afnai Sansar Ma Kina are slow songs while other songs are heavy, loud and rocking.

As per Dali, Ma Ra Malai is “supposed to be very sarcastic”. He added, “Being artistes/musicians, we are expressing creative aggression through our music.” The songs are about contemporary issues of Nepali culture and society which have given birth to songs like Gari Khana Deu. So the album is dedicated to all the “frustrations”. - The Himalayan Times

"Albatross: Atti Bhayo!!!"

The words spread like a wildfire way earlier which had their fans excitedly anticipating for their latest offering. “Atti Bhayo”, the new album by Albatross had certainly created buzz among the music lovers across the country and abroad before it actually materialized. For the past few months, the band have been giving a sneak peek of their album by performing few of its tracks live, gigs after gigs. And now the listeners can finally have their own piece of the record. “Atti Bhayo” got released on 26th Jan.

Patan Museum on Wednesday evening was probably the most happening place in the city. The venue was jam-packed with spectators as Albatross made their new work public amidst friends, family, media personnel and some of their fans.
The album was officially launched by founder of SheshHeera Foundation, Chief Guest Shesh Raj Dali who also happens to be the grandfather of vocalist Shirish Dali.

A collaborative effort of Musicology, Kgarira.com and eleven11, the event saw the foursome amaze the audience with their electrifying performance. They started with folk infused renditions of few of the songs from their previous record “Jo Jas Sanga Sambandhit Chha”, featuring folk ensemble Kutumba and then concluded the show singing all the tracks from the fresh set which eventually led to a standing ovation from the crowd.

Currently made up of Shirish on vocals, Sunny Manandhar on guitar, Avaya Bajracharya on Bass and Niraj Bajracharya on drums, Albatross have had several recordings in the past, some released some not. However, “Atti Bhayo” will mark as their second album to go commercial. It has line up of eight tracks specializing in alternative rock music and expressing different emotions that a person goes through. The album title and cover basically revolve around the expression “When Emotion Turns Into Frustration”. The group themselves have taken care of the songwriting and composing job except for the singles “Chaina” and “Janata Ko Appeal” which have been penned by Eugene Shrestha and Bhim Nidhi Tiwari respectively. Although “Janata Ko Appeal”, which features the vocals of band manager Nitesh Linkha Rai, is a politically inclined song among others expressing social/political awareness, the rockers do not prefer to categorize themselves as a political band.

Albatross claim they have matured since their previous material with “Atti Bhayo”. They say it is a result of a year full of hard work and hope it reaches out to all the listeners of different musical tastes delivering the message the band has tried to convey through it. - Cyber Sansar

"Albatross's Atti Bhayo launched"

KATHMANDU, Jan 27: Amidst fans and music lovers, Albatross launched their much-awaited third album, Atti Bhayo, at Patan Museum on Wednesday, January 26.

The release of the album by Shesh Raj Dali, grandfather of lead vocalist Shirish Raj Dali, was followed by a performance by the band. In addition to the eight numbers of the album, the band also jammed with popular instrumental band Kutumba in three songs from Albatross’s previous album. All songs, lyrics, music and compositions have been done by Albatross, except for the lyrics of two songs.

“Janata Ma Appeal is a poem by Bhimnidhi Tiwari,” announced band manager Nitesh Linkha Rai, who performed the song at the event. Rai is a former vocalist of Albatross.

Albatross, although formed in 1999, have had many changes in its line-up over the years. The current line-up consists of Shirish (vocals/guitars), Sunny Manandhar (guitars), Avaya Siddhi Bajracharya (bass) and Niraj Bajracharya (drums).

Released after a break of five years and nine months of hard work, the alternative rock band describes Atti Bhayo as ‘when emotions turn into frustrations’. However, they do point out that ‘it is not a political album but some of the songs do express social awareness.’

The original Albatross sound is not missing from the album, although it is different from their previous albums, says the band. That, however, is up to the listeners to decide.

Band Profile

Albatross was born in the year 1998 and has made a landmark in the current Nepali music scene. It all began when a couple of guys joined hands came together with their rusted guitars and other old instruments to transcend the sound of Nepali Alternative music, each of which has significantly influenced the music which the band creates.

Evolved from a three-man school band and now currently consisting of four members, Albatross has made their presence known nationally and internationally. With a huge influence amongst the current generation, Albatross is also popular amongst anyone who likes Nepali Contemporary Music.

Between the four of the members they have influences ranging from thrash metal to grunge to R&B and Hip-Hop. It would be safe to say that all the members love Pantera, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Megadeth, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and a whole bunch of local nepali artists too.

It is extremely difficult for bands to sustain here in Nepal. We have had many talented musicians having to take on other options to sustain themselves. As a band we are back in the scene trying to beat the odds in hopes of being inspiration to other bands to keep on doing what they're doing. We believe that Nepali musicians have a lot to offer not just to the music industry in Nepal but to the world.
