Sourena Sefati (composer/santour), Deborah Leah Ungar (clarinet), Gregory Gutin (percussion) have combined their talents to share the music of Iran with audiences.  Their repertoire highlights the special qualities of the Iranian Santour, Bb and G clarinets, and various percussion accompaniments through new arrangements of folk music as well as contemporary compositions using the dastgãh tradition.  The dastgãh in Persian music is similar to the western musical scales (major and minor) and also Maqams in Turkish and Arabic music. Their programs explore dastgah-e Homayun, Nava and Shur among others through arrangements and improvisations, including Kuch (Migration) and Gazaal, Dokhtar-e Boyerahmadi, Omid (Hope), Farah Afza, Khalseh and Kabooki.

Sourena Sefati was born in Ramsar, Iran in 1977. He began learning Santour at age eleven with Masters Esfandyar Shiroodi and Eskandar Hassas.  He learned from “Radif Mirza Abdollah” as the Radif of Persian Classical Music with Masters Majid Kiani and Amir Okhovvat . Also, he learned the modern technics of playing Santour with Master Ardavan Kamkar (1997-2000). Sefati composed Iranian music for different ensembles. “Az Roozegare Rang Amiz (From Deceitful Ages)” is one of his albums recorded by Sepido Siah ensemble in 2012.  He has performed on more than 50 albums in Iran with ensembles such as Sepido Siah, Bidel, Hazar Avaz, Rastak, Parnian, and Molana, and in Asia, Europe, and Africa. He was soloist at Iran Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (2009 to 2014), Iranian Chamber Orchestra (2009), and Mehrnavazan National Orchestra (2011). Sourena moved to the United States in 2014 and teaches Iranian music in Albuquerque. He joined Rahim AlHaj’s ensemble in 2016.   www.sourenasefati.com
