"Download.com Editor's Review"

Heavy guitars, loud drums, strong vocals and powerful choruses is the formula for good power pop and Album knows it. They sound like a band who has been around for years, but they're not. Catch them before everyone else does. - download.com

"Clever-cool or Clever High School"

Album
Demo
Self-Released

Format Reviewed: CD

It's hard to decide if naming a band Album is clever-cool or clever high school, and this five song demo doesn't really provide an answer. It's roughly half emo-rock and half hard-rock, and while the hard rockers are mostly better than the heavy fluff, the whole thing has the feel of a very good high school band.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. Sure, a lot of other bands are covering the same territory, but many of them aren't as good as Album -- and that's the stuff you're hearing on the radio.

Next came Album, which reminded me of Collective Soul … in a good way. How many bands feature three distinctive guitar players? These guys wrote tight, focused and exciting songs. There weren’t any frills; there weren’t any gimmicks. Good songs help you win events like these and Album won the judges’ vote for its spirited and indie-inspired rock. ... my vote was heading to Album and my mind wasn’t changing.

"That's Textbook"

Album
Self-titled, five-track CD (available from albumlovesyou.com).

February 24, 2005

Gimme an E.--Gimme a Mo. Album does manage to avoid the most stomach-turning trait of nouveau-emo, the three-note vocal melody. (Lets give em two points for each added note.) With three guitarists, their sound is both heavier and more intricate than a lot of their peers. (Five points.) Three distinct vocalists help keep things from sounding samey, too. (Another five.) The lyric sheet reveals references to unsettling dreams? Drowning imagery? Two occurrences of the phrase staring at the sun? A song about writing a song about ambivalence? Hmm. Thats textbook.

Listed from underdogs to favorites, here we go

4-1

It was pretty easy to pick the winner of Round 1 and that’s because Album was so head-and-shoulders above the competition. This fivesome, which includes three singers/guitarists, writes catchy and dense indie-rock tunes, some rocking a little harder than you’d expect.

The band’s Web page, www.albumband.com, is actually, at times, funnier than The Onion, the satirical newspaper it’s trying to emulate. So you have five good musicians who write solid songs, don’t take themselves too seriously and make you laugh; that sounds like a good formula.

"Deceptively Nuanced"

Combat Rock
Confessions of a Battle of the Bands judge.

...

Ultimately, the judges selected Album, a loud, melodic, Midwestern-emo-tinged quintet. Three guitarists gave them a deceptively nuanced sound, and by trading off lead vocal duties they avoided sounding monochromatic. Most important of all, they had memorable songs. Were they the most original band Probably not. "In just about every city, there's a band like that," said one of the judges. But we all perceived something special that didn't carry over when thinking about them afterward. That's the magic of live performance, man.
