Artists To Convene At Los Angeles’ Troubadour for Danny Federici Tribute Show

The anniversary of a musician’s death can be a harrowing experience for bandmates, friends and fans alike. However, it is celebration, not sorrow, that will characterize the vibe during an April 19 tribute show at Los Angeles’ The Troubadour that marks the one-year death anniversary of Danny Federici, the 35-year keyboardist and accordion player for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Federici died at age 58 of complications from melanoma on April 17, 2008.
The upcoming show, organized by Federici’s son Jason and his bandmate Jason Heath, benefits Dannyfund.org, a cure-for-melanoma research charity founded by Danny and Jason Federici. The bill includes appearances from Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls, Joe Purdy, Alexa George, and several other singer-songwriters. The show will also have special guests, but who could they be…?
If you’re thinking that The Boss himself might show up, you might be right. After all, Springsteen helped launch Dannyfund to a worldwide audience in a TV-spot during this year’s Super Bowl. Springsteen also has a few days off after his Los Angeles shows April 15 and 16… But Springsteen might just as likely hang back from the spotlight to keep the focus on Federici.
In any case, $15 seems like a miniscule price to see some prolific songwriters and do your part in easing the suffering of those with melanoma. To get a taste of what you’ll hear, you can download Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls’ “A Fighter’s Lullaby” (which is dedicated to Frederici) from the Dannyfund website. - Beatcrave.com

Will Springsteen turn up at Troubadour tribute to Federici?

federiciIt’s a reasonable question — just like the one that wonders if the Boss might show up at Coachella. After all, there’s a conspicuous gap in his current tour itinerary with the E Street Band, which stops April 15-16 at Los Angeles Sports Arena … and then doesn’t resume until April 21 in Boston.

My sources tell me not to expect a Coachella sighting — but this is Bruce we’re talking about. The guy loves to make unexpected, unannounced cameos. Anything seems possible. Especially an appearance at something as meaningful as The Danny Federici Memorial Fundraiser, a benefit commemorating the first anniversary of the keyboardist’s death, scheduled for April 19 at the Troubadour.

Comedian and cancer survivor Robert Schimmel will host (read more about his personal struggle here). Tom Morello (aka the Nightwatchman) will perform, as will Joe Purdy, Jason Heath & the Greedy Souls, Chris Joyner, Chris Seefried, Alexa George and, as the promo flier promises, “special guests.”

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 the day of the show, assuming you can still get in.

Net proceeds will benefit Dannyfund.org, a melanoma research charity founded by Danny and Jason Federici to help raise awareness and find a cure for melanoma. Springsteen introduced the fund during a Super Bowl ad, and Heath & the Greedy Souls’ tribute track “A Fighter’s Lullaby” is available as a free download on the site.

Bio

Alexa George was born the youngest of three in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. While music and singing were a part of her life since the age of 6, it was not until she inherited a 1971 Gibson Heritage guitar, from her father’s ill and dying friend, that she decided music would be her life. The mint condition vintage guitar inspired her to take guitar playing more seriously and during the summer of her junior year at the University of Michigan she taught herself to play. In a few months time she joined an acoustic band, in which Alexa sang lead vocals and played rhythm guitar. They performed often throughout the next two years at various music venues in Ann Arbor on campus, and around the metropolitan Detroit area. Alexa also spent this time writing her first original songs and thus planting her seed as a songwriter.
Alexa was born first generation to Greek-immigrant parents. Her perseverance and drive to realize her dreams is not only a trait she was born with but was also learned through her parents’ ambition as a tailor and seamstress to open their own business and pave the way for their children to realize their own dreams. With the musical ear and crystal clear voice inherited from her father, she writes and sings about her family and childhood dreams.
A dreamer from the start, Alexa always imagined herself somewhere outside of her hometown Troy, Michigan. After saving up enough money after graduation, in the spring of 2003, she drove cross-country to Los Angeles where she still resides. Although loving the city of Los Angeles, making it ‘home’ was a bit of a struggle for Alexa because of close family ties back home in Michigan. In her songs, such as “Belly Full of Ache” she invokes the feeling of being lost and longing for familiarity such as in the line, “piercing chandelier hangs over her head like her mother’s words.” After writing, performing and collaborating with other musicians for three years, Alexa began recording her first five-song EP ‘Everything Left’ which was released in late 2006. In these five songs she writes of her personal struggles in such a way that everyone who has transitioned into adulthood can relate. With the hopeful title, she proclaims that this is only the beginning -- she still has “everything left”. Since 2006, Alexa has been writing songs on the piano in addition to the guitar, adding more depth and range to her music. She is currently writing new songs and performing throughout the Los Angeles area. She is working in recording studios on her next album, which is scheduled for release at the end of 2009.
Alexa is a singer/songwriter who sings with a passion deep and heartfelt. Her music and lyrics are born from personal reflection, with an almost spiritual reverence for life's trials and journeys of personal discovery and introspection. Her songs are inspired by love and the joy and heartbreak of growing up. Each song speaks for itself and has its own unique style. Alexa writes story-telling, emotional lyrics that ring true through her powerful, soulful voice. Her songs are very intimate and range from upbeat pop, to ballady, to a raw acoustic/folk sound. Her voice is the driving force of each song.
