"Alexa James - The Cove - San Antonio - REVIEW"

Day two of a recent visit to San Antonio ruled in many special ways for Rose and I. We headed to a neato joint called The Cove to have delicious din-din and we were not disappointed whatsoever. We'd been here before catching our beloved Stone Coyotes a year or so ago and really like this establishment but more on that later. The "dessert" we got (beside's Rose's slice of carrot cake) was thee entertainment.

A lady by the name of Alexa James was passing thru with an unexpected 4 piece set up! AJ grew up in The Woodlands and Albuquerque and has toured 30 countries. After spending too long years in Nashville and tiring of "the sound" there she is now based out of Los Angeles. She recently hauled in the Hot Adult Contemporary Artist of the Year award at the 2010 LA Music Awards.

Girl is on a tour from there to Mobile, Alabama this go round by car. Now that is the kind of stuff HMR likes to support. Her new release, "You Are That To Me", is a nice ‘lil ditty from what we caught.

AJ opened with a sweet cover of "We Can Work It Out" making the lyrics so real and timeless. Decked out in an eye-catching ensemble of a sexy red pop tart skirt over blue jeans was hot and James filled it out quite nicely. The title cut was tender with the message of knowing you are loved at this very moment just the way you are. Being this was our Christmas "Fluff Trip" it fit well. "I Wanna Be the One" expressed the need to feel special and make others feel the same way.

I caught how Alexa liked to just sit in the crowd early on and talk to the people in earnest, asking them where they were from and such. She beams a positive vibe which is cool. The band kicked it for a holiday "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and the overall performance was energetic and authentic in nature. AJ's pop rock with good hooks-and-good looks- is something HMR will keep on the watch list for the future.......... - Eddie Ferranti, Houston Music Review

"World’s Largest Music Awards Announces 2009 Nominations"

Grassroots Music Organization Just Plain Folks (JPF) has announced their nominees for the 2009 edition of their music awards.

Pop Singer-Songwriter Alexa James was nominated in three categories: Pop Album for her album “Something Changed”, Pop Song for “I’m Waiting”, and Top Songwriter. Alexa’s rock/pop style includes fun alternative nuances that speak of life, hope, and freedom. With her fun, honest songwriting, strong, memorable voice, and blazing red hair, Alexa leaves her audience with the wow factor turned up high.

The JPF Music Awards came to acknowledge Alexa through a rigorous process. After receiving a record setting 42,000 albums and over a half million songs from 163 countries around the world, the organization’s staff and team of volunteers filtered the music down to both song and album nominees in 95 genres of music. This year’s nominees come from over 80 different countries around the world.

It all started as a friendly effort to recognize some independent artists who made great music which had been overlooked by the mainstream media. Organization founder Brian Austin Whitney quickly realized there was a big empty gap and need in the world of music to recognize more than just the top commercial sellers. “We were getting amazing albums from unknown musicians and composers that screamed out for attention.” He continues “whereas larger televised awards are well suited to recognize music’s most popular and commercially successful recordings, we felt we could fill the need to recognize the music made by the other 98% of the world.” Whitney added “all the music that is judged is actually listened to in each round. Most awards, including the most famous, simply hand out a list of names and say ‘vote’ so it’s based more on fame and name recognition than it is on their actual music.”

The organization spent 14 months from the initial entry date to screen all the music and narrow down the field. JPF uses a unique mix of judges that come from the music industry, fellow artist and songwriter peers and music fans. “We feel that those groups mixed together make for a balanced and compelling process which identifies a lot of music that any one group might miss.”

Smaller genres are treated with the same respect as their large mainstream counterparts and often new trends in music show up long before the mainstream music industry notices. “We’ve also found some amazing talent years before a wider audience catches on” says the groups Project Director Linda Berger. “It’s really gratifying finding new talent, but we also love it when we can recognize established artists who are still making music that moves us even if they don’t leave the current day commercial marketplace.”

So what is the criterion for judging all this music? “One simple question: Does the music move you?” Whitney explains. “I was an active musician, songwriter and most importantly music lover myself before starting this and when I went to write the instructions for our first awards process back in 1998, it occurred to me that people often use strict and rigid measuring sticks to judge music. That seemed unnatural to me. People listen to and love music that moves them. It doesn’t matter if it was recorded by a world class superstar in a million dollar studio or by an unknown songwriter with a laptop and microphone in their bedroom. There are no actual rules for why music moves people and you can’t build a formula around it though industry always tries. It either moves people or it doesn’t. Our awards process focuses on finding music that moves people collectively from all walks of life. Whitney goes on “What better way to motivate theses great artists and writers to do more great work than to recognize their music not for how many units they sold or who they are dating on the Hollywood hot-list, but for how it can bring a tear, cause a giggle, make someone’s jaw drop open, get them dancing out of their seats or simply make someone feel connected with the universe. We’ve found music from around the world that does all those things. We’re just happy to share it with the world through our awards and give these creators a sincere nudge of support.”

The 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards show will take place in Nashville, TN on August 29, 2009 at the Wildhorse Saloon. Winners will be announced live at the show and then posted on the website the next day. For a complete listing of this year’s nominees and more information, please visit www.justplainfolks.org.

YOU ARE THAT TO ME

Bio

Hope. Many search for it. Love offers it.

Having grown up in Houston and Albuquerque, toured in nearly 30 countries, and now based in the Los Angeles area, Alexa James' music provides an insight into her soul and a welcome escape into her unique guitar-based, hooky sound.

"I find myself constantly looking ahead, dreaming big. You know, like you can see things so far away as if they are happening today? This is a fun place to be in your head. But you step back into the reality of today, and realize you're not anywhere close.

'Even still, I find myself walking in the hope of what will happen and what will become. Where I find myself being challenged lately is simplifying things down to what's really important so that I can live fully in the moments of each day".

Alexa James writes and sings about these hopes and struggles in her new release entitled, YOU ARE THAT TO ME. As a listener, you're invited to embrace the love and the life that's around you and make the most if it, while tapping your toes at the the same time.

For example, in the title track "You Are That To Me," James writes about the sentiment that all of us long to hear "you are perfect in this moment". Knowing you are loved and complete right here, right now. When we come to that realization we are willing to fight to keep it as she sings about in "Better Than Losing You."

YOU ARE THAT TO ME is a self journey that we all must explore. One that will help us to realize what we are looking for is already around us and that we simply need to embrace it.

Upon her arrival on the west coast she won HOT ADULT CONTEMPORARY ARTIST OF THE YEAR at the 2010 Los Angeles Music Awards. "I'm so thrilled to be part of the LA Music Awards! I just moved to LA from Nashville, and have loved the journey so far. This win is like a welcome greeting reaffirming that I'm in the right place."
