Bio

Originally from Rochester, New York, Alexander Verstraete received his B.M. in composition from the State University of New York at Fredonia. While composing for a variety of musical media such as chamber groups, theatre, wind ensemble, orchestra, solo trumpet and electronica, his guidance came from Dr. Karl Boelter, Director of the School of Music at Fredonia, and Dr. Donald Bohlen, Composition Chair.

In addition to his composition studies, Verstraete also studied trumpet under Dr. Wade Weast, who is now the current Director of the School of Music at the University of South Florida at Tampa. In addition to Dr. Weast, Verstraete also studied under Alex Jokipii, principal trumpet of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. While at Fredonia, Verstraete competed in the annual Concerto Competition performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto and the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto, in addition to being the sole student member of the SUNY Fredonia Faculty Brass Quintet.

Verstraete's compositions have been performed by numerous student and faculty groups while at Fredonia, along with having the premiere performance of his orchestral work, Dreamland, performed by the SUNY Fredonia College Orchestra. His String Quartet No. 1, considered his signature piece, was composed for his senior thesis and had its world premiere by the SUNY Fredonia String Quartet on March 5th, 2006.

Currently, Verstraete works for The Studios at Linden Oaks with Jay Advertising as an assistant and freelance audio engineer and composer. He also performs on his own and others works.
