"Here's the video for The Boatmen's song 'Blessed'"

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Alex Boatman turned a bad time in his life into a great song.

The graduate of Liverpool High School and SUNY Fredonia wrote "Blessed" "about overcoming a bad thing," Boatman explained while visiting The Post-Standard studio to perform the song for the Music Notes Performance series with his longtime friend, drummer Brandon Morse.

Boatman wrote "Blessed" about beating a gambling problem, he says. He's recorded the song at SubCat Music Studios in Armory Square,. and the single, available on iTunes. It also will be on the second CD he's planning for the band that includes he and Morse, The Boatmen.

Boatman works for ARC of Onondaga County. He studied business at Fredonia, but discovered he found more satisfaction in a career founded on helping people.

Morse, who also plays in The Mike McKay band, produces the morning show at Syracuse country radio station WOLF. He says he compares Boatman's earthy voice and songwriting style to Darius Rucker, the country singer who got his initial burst of fame while fronting Hootie and the Blowfish.

Boatman says Hootie indeed was one of his favorites, along with the Dave Matthews Band.

Morse thinks his friend has enough talent to take The Boatmen "to the top." They often write songs together, and Morse helped record and engineer the eight songs on first CD "The Boatmen," at SubCat in 2010, when it was located in Skaneateles.

Boatman says the drummer, meanwhile, "gets the emotion and dynamics of what I'm doing."

The Boatmen play at 9 p.m. today at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse, mixing classic rock and originals. The band also will kick Halloween weekend with a 10 p.m. show on Octy. 28, at Coleman's on Tipp Hill.

He says a fan at the recent Ski Caz Jam asked him to label his band's style.

"I said pop-folk-rock," Boatman says. "I don't like that. I'm just going to call it singer-songwriter." - Mark Bialczak/The Post-Standard
