"Indie Week 2017 Independent Women: Supermarket, presented by M88 Entertainment Group"

Alexis Lynn, all the way from Vancouver, BC was our last Indie Week act of the evening. The teenaged singer/songwriter brought her pop/R&B vibe to the stage and showed off what she’s got in a strong way.

Already tabbed as a top 20 under 20 talent in the 2016 CBC Searchlight Contest, the 18 year old showed all of the confidence you’d ever hope to see from a teenager on stage. And while she admitted that she’s most comfortable on the keys, she stripped it down to play her own acoustic guitar and didn’t miss a beat.

Alexis Lynn told the Toronto crowd that she’s working towards an EP release sometime soon, and to be honest, it won’t be soon enough. The power and smoothness in her voice was attention grabbing, and when she announced that she was going to play a cover by one of her favourites, nobody should have been surprised when she started singing Alicia Keys’ Fallin’.

Original songs like Same Girl, That Kiss, Even Friends, and I Love You I Do, all worked to show off what she’s got ready to share with the musical world. And her closing number, Promises, did an excellent job of wrapping things up in style.

Alexis Lynn, along with her guitar/keys/beats player Caesar, brought a groove that people danced and bobbed and rocked to from start to finish.

She’s one to watch. - Joshua Murray

"Let Me Introduce You To Alexis Lynn _ October 19, 2015"

2015 is the third year I have attended Studio Cloud 30's annual Red Carpet Series. The brainchild of Warren Dean Flandez and Katherine Flandez, there are four concerts over the course of one day featuring students, teachers and honoured guests. My husband and I always make the evening show and are never disappointed. We wholeheartedly enjoy the show's mix of professional and amateur performances, as well as seeing artists we have heard before alongside fresh offerings. This evening there was a new voice that caught my attention – Alexis Lynn.

It was hard to put together the maturity I saw in her performance with the fact she is still in high school. She looked very relaxed while performing, as if she did this every day. I played piano for years and am still impressed when someone can play and sing at the same time – she did. Great pitch, unique voice, bang on song selection and good stage presence were all there. For her second number, renown saxophonist Eli Bennett unexpectedly joined her on stage and she didn't miss a beat.

I almost never interview people in high school, yet here is her 8Q. It is well-deserved. I will be following this artist closely and dearly hoping she keeps me in the loop. And when her first full CD comes out I will definitely be the first in line.

8Q Spotlight Alexis Lynn

What is your current career(s) – paid and unpaid ?

Currently I’m enrolled as a full time student at Clayton Heights Secondary. I have a deep passion for music and I am actively pursuing a career in the industry as a singer/song-writer.

Can you share an interesting thing (or two) about your journey to reach this moment?

As I usually accompany myself with piano when I sing, people often find it surprising to learn that I’ve only been playing for about three years. I used to take lessons once every other week. Even I was shocked when my mom tallied it up and told me I had only racked up about 40 hours in lesson time in two years. I think I practice so often that it feels like much more has gone into it than just those lessons alone.

What 3 things would you like people to know about you to give them a sense of who you really are?

Alongside music, my schedule is immensely full. I play soccer in the BC Soccer Premier League, which entails practices three to four times a week, as well as games once a week.
I enjoy learning and manage to maintain a 4.0 GPA in high school.
When time permits, I also like to help the people in the Downtown Eastside by handing out food and clothing.
Highest moment so far?

I think this past summer has really been a milestone for me! I started off by being chosen as a top ten finalist for Ottawa Bluesfest’s competition – “She’s The One” – and was flown to Ottawa to perform. From Ottawa, I flew to L.A. to attend “VocalizeU”, a ten-day artist intensive workshop. I met award-winning industry professionals from all over the world and was honoured to be one of the very few selected out of about 200 people to perform my first original song in the closing show.

When I returned home from my trip, I performed in the finals of “The Star Experience Canada” (EveRIAthing Shaw Cable), a songwriting competition, where I went home with a double-win of “Best Song” and “Audience Favourite”! To end my summer, I was a part of Studio Cloud 30’s Red Carpet Series as an "Emerging Artist" and was stunned when during my performance of “Bennie & The Jets,” acclaimed Jazz Saxophonist Eli Bennett joined me on stage! It was a privilege to share the stage with such an accomplished musician. The summer of 2015 is going to be hard to beat!

What are you working on right now? In the next 6 months?

As a result of my wins in “The Star Experience Canada,” I am in the process of producing my single “Weak”. I just finished recording it at Blue Wave Studios in Vancouver with James Buddy Rogers (who was actually one of the judges from the competition), who had so kindly offered to be in the studio with me every day and produce the single for me! The package also includes a music video production, so we will be working on that in October with Caspar Ryan Films. Both the video and the single will be released sometime in December/January, and hopefully it will be getting some air-play shortly after.

In the next 6 months, I will also be writing new music and in the studio recording.

Who and/or what inspires you?

Personally, I get really inspired when I go to concerts. I love seeing other big performers because it’s exactly where I want to be. It makes me just want to get on stage and do what they’re doing. For my original music, I get inspired to write when I feel like I need to tell someone something that I might not be able to say directly to them. It’s a huge communication tool for me; the things I can’t say, I sing. Some people that I look up to include: Elton John, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Lady Gaga, my parents and Malala Yousafzai.

How do you personally define success?

I think there are many different levels of success and I don’t really think it ever ends. I don’t believe there’s a point where it stops, because for me, once I’ve accomplished something it’s like ok, what’s next? I always want to improve and strive for the next level of success. Right now, getting air-play for my single would be success for me… until the next thing!

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure would have to be movies. I love binge-watching Netflix whenever I can! My all time favourite movies would have to be the Harry Potter series. You could probably say I’m a little obsessed!

The Star Experience Songwriting Competition paved the way for sixteen young talented teens who have the passion for writing music to finally unleash their hidden musical prowess. They were given an opportunity to share their talent on the Columbia Theater stage in New Westminster. The event was hosted by Ria Jade along with some very popular teen actors such as Dakota Daulby, Matreya Scarrwener & Mitchell Kummen.

This is the very first year for The Star Experience Canada which has seen a highly talented array of young songwriters! Simply The Best TV correspondent Zenia Marshall interviewed first place winner Madison Bell on how important it is for young people to develop their musical skills.

“I think it’s a really good way to release what you’re feeling a lot of times. A lot of people tend to bottle in their emotions and opinions on things but I think music kind of helps outlet that,” Bell said.

“Never Fall” by the audience favorite winner Alexis Lynn won the Best Song. When asked what inspired her to write the winning song she said, “It’s about a multitude of experiences with boys and how it would be if I would fall for them but they wouldn’t feel the same way about me. At the end, there would be a lyric shift and it’s where my doubt was proven wrong and they fell for me as well.”

The event started promptly at 6pm and ended at 9:30pm. The stunning Ria Jade was so proud of the successful event, “I guessed I just always wanted to help people since I was a kid, ever since I was just 5 or 6. I knew that my calling was to help in any way I could. And as a musician/songwriter, I know how hard it is to make it in the music industry, it’s always like a struggling battle every day. So I first started meeting talents, and I wanted to help them get their stuff out then I met these humanitarians, I wanted to get their voices out there. I just wanted to help people. People always say that the future is in the hands of the youth and I think that if we can make a better world now we can make a better tomorrow,” Ria Jade explained.

All of the major winners will have the opportunity to perform on the eveRIAthing TV show or any other Ria Jade major events. They will also be performing live during The Star Experience 2016 Finals set for next year.

The Star Experience Canada 2015 winners of the free songwriting competition had a lot more to be happy about than just their placing. The Audience Favourite, along with the First and Second place winners, each received a 12-hour recording and music production package with established music producers. The Audience Favourite, Alexis Lynn, took home a prize package valued at over $5,000, while the First Place winner, Madison Bell, took the grand prize valued at over $6,000!

An added special highlight to the event was the inspirational message by well-known anti-bullying advocate Carol Todd, founder of the Amanda Todd Legacy Society. She also presented the 2015 Inspiring Youth Awards.

All in all, it was a heartfelt and very meaningful event. Congratulations to the Diy family (Jackie & Raffy and their daughters Deanne and Ria Jade). The star is bright for this event which indeed promoted music and inspiration to the youth in its true essence and hopefully after the successful Saturday night, there will be more Star Experience songwriting competition in years to come.

Bio

Recognized as a “Top 100” in the 2019 CBC Searchlight Contest, Canadian urban pop artist, Alexis Lynn, has a lot more to say than the average twenty something. With the release of her current single, “Worst Behavior”, this dynamic young artist displays a maturity beyond her years and owns her power to say what’s on her mind. Her new collection of songs from her debut EP explore everything from relationships to bullying - but in a way that is fresh and unexpected. Her songs tell her story of where it all began and where she is today: strong, confident, self aware, and ready to come into her own.

Alexis’ love of music began as far back as she can remember. Some of her earliest and fondest memories date back to listening to music with her family, singing along to the car radio, and a father who loved to play guitar. So, it wasn’t much of a surprise to her parents when she decided she wanted to be a singer at the age of 9. As she got older, Alexis delved deep into the music of Amy Winehouse, Mariah Carey, and Alicia Keys, influences that can be heard in her modern pop/R&B sound. And now, the Surrey, B.C. native is prepared to embark on a new journey, releasing her EP in the U.S. market for the first time, a move that is both exciting and nerve-wracking for the young artist.

This project is deep and personal, and her writing reflects that. As you immerse yourself in the mature lyrics of Alexis Lynn, you will find this new body of work explores love, lust, vulnerability, overcoming obstacles, self-awareness, and power with a polished, yet personal sound. “Not This Time” was released in March across all platforms along with her first full length music video, and her latest single “Worst Behavior” is out now.

As she relives her life’s moments through song, it’s her hope that her music empowers people as they relate her lyrics to their own life experiences. She recognizes that a catchy chorus or hook can forge an instant bond between her and her listeners, which is one of the reasons she excels at the creative process and continues to develop her sound accordingly.

In addition to writing and creating music, First Nations’ artist Alexis Lynn performs live locally in Canada. She loves the rush of a live audience, and the connection she feels to them is often indescribable. Alexis has her sights set on touring as her popularity increases, exposing a worldwide audience to a side of her not yet seen. Her passion for her artistry has propelled her out of her comfort zone. Tackling the American music scene, learning to navigate a larger market, and gaining radio traction for her singles are all challenges Alexis Lynn welcomes with open arms. Through strong faith and a family that’s encouraged and supported her from the start, she knows this next chapter in her life may very well write itself . . . and she’s taking notes.
