"Interview with Dallas Cowan"

All right, what is your full name, and your favorite food? Alexander Thomas Miller, and I could probably eat sushi every day! haha

What is your favorite band of all time and who are you listening to right now? I don’t know if I could say that I have an all time favorite band, but the person that has had the most influence on me would be Tim McGraw. The first CD I ever bought with my own money was “A Place In The Sun” when I was eleven. It had a huge effect on my musical taste, and gave me the desire to pursue country music. Right now I have been listening to a lot of blues and classical music. Being a student, classical is perfect for studying. Claude Debussy is one of my favorite composers for sure.

Who or what inspired you to pursue music? A lot of it has to do with a love to perform. I honestly just love to be on a stage. My parents have a big part in it too. If they didn’t make me audition for plays and choir when I was little, I wouldn’t love it as much as I do. Another inspiration is country music as a whole. I love everything about it. I don’t think there is any other genre in music where the fans and performers have as much fun.

If you could play with anyone who would it be and why? Probably Keith Urban. His music has had a big influence on my writing, and his stage presence is awesome. I think it would be super fun.

What are some of your goals that you have on your music journey? I would love to play music for a living. Whether that be getting signed and touring, or being a songwriter. The best place to be is in the center of God’s will, and if that includes me playing music I would be stoked.

What are some upsides and some downsides in being a young musician? I think a downside would be the pressure of getting signed when you’re young. The money in music now a days is in young talent. Sometimes I feel like I only have a few more years to make this thing happen. I often forget that Alan Jackson didn’t even sign his first record deal till he was in his late 20’s. The upside is you have so much freedom. Your not tied down with a full time job and other responsibilities. A young musician can truly follow his or her dreams and go wherever they take them.

How are you able to balance your schooling, family, God and music in your life? The only way to do that is by setting your priorities. God comes first. No compromise can be made. You have to know where you stand in a certain situation before you get to it. Family no doubt is next, because without my amazing family I probably wouldn’t even be pursuing music. They are so encouraging and supportive. Now I would like to say the music is the next priority but I have to finish school. Haha. My parents both graduated from college and they have always encouraged me to do the same. Music then just falls into place as something I will always do. It has always been apart of my life and its important to me, and you make time for things that are important to you.

Where do you find inspiration for some of your songs? I love to write about the idea of something. I like to write as if I’m writing from the outside looking in. My song “More” didn’t really happen, but when I was working on it, I was definitely thinking how cool it would be if it did. Sometimes, I like to treat song writing like an author of fiction stories. Its fun to create songs that are based in a world that I can control, and anything can happen. I can’t wait for more inspiration as life goes on. It’s going to be awesome to be able to write songs for my future wife and kids. Hopefully it will be a crazy ride.

What life lessons have you learned from pursuing music? Patience. Our generation wants everything fast, and we get uneasy when it doesn’t happen in the time we want it to. Truth of it is, I have to wait on God’s time. That’s a comforting place to be though, cause I don’t have to worry about anything because it will all work itself out.

What does 2010 hold for you and your music? Lord willing I will book more gigs, and prioritize networking with fans. I’m mainly focusing on getting my music out there and into people’s hands. To go back a year when I released my first demo, its amazing to see how far things have come. I’m playing the El Rey Theater in Hollywood next month! It’s just such a cool thing to step back and see how much the Lord has truly blessed me.

What advice do you have for young people that are trying to follow there dreams? Don’t limit yourself to what you can do. Let others do that, and then prove them wrong. - Writing Ground

Bio

Alex Miller was born on May 13, 1988 in Van Nuys, California. Growing up his parents always encouraged him, his brother, and sister to pursue music. His mother Deborah was the choir teacher at the grade school they attended, and his father Adrian is a professional trumpet player. The first instrument Alex played was the violin at the age of 5. From there he moved on to the piano, and by 7th grade he had purchased his very first guitar. Alex had a friend teach him a few chords, and from there the rest is history.

His love for country music was developed after purchasing Tim McGraw's "A Place in the Sun" when he was 11 years old. It is still one of his favorite CD's to this day. Even though his father was a jazz and classical enthusiast from Ohio, Alex's mom always encouraged his love for country music. Being from South Dakota, she loved the fact that her Southern California born and raised son loved the same music that made up so much of her life.

After playing in many bands including serving on worship teams at church, he struggled to find his niche in the world of music. Alex's life was spared from a severe motorcycle accident when he was 20 years old, and this was the direction that he needed. He says, "I had a lot of time to think and write while sitting on the couch for those months, and by the end of my recuperation I came to the conclusion that I wanted to pursue country music with my whole heart. I just felt the Lord left me on this earth for a reason."

His unique and fun sound is spreading rapidly in the Southern California area. Alex is excited to not only continue growing his influence in CA, but to start spreading his music to country fans across the nation! His main goal is to glorify God with all his talents and abilities, and use these gifts for something that is far greater than himself.
