"SQ Soundcloud Showcase: February – Part #1"

Alex The Great – The Saint Pt. 1

Taking influences from bands and artists like Bob Dylan and Modest Mouse, “The Saint Pt. 1” takes us into the hearts and minds of Steven Voges, Hamid Mashali, Vlad Matveikov, and Juan Johansson to show us a sound that Bright Eyes and The Shins would be envious of. As catchy as it is eloquent and delicate, the track takes a few listens to really make the most of. Born to be heard while basking in the English Sun at a summer festival, “The Saint Part One” makes you want to dig through your record collection, just to find something else like it. - SQ Magazine

"Canadian Music Fest gears up for weekend"

Singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist Steven Voges didn’t have much of an accent, and the three musicians accompanying him cranked up the energy as the set went on. One song had dark lyrics but a nifty shuffle rhythm and another was quite Dylan-esque. - MSN Canada Entertainemnt

Bio

Alex the Great is an independent Alternative-Folk-Rock act based in Brighton, UK, with a story that goes far beyond the reach of an average musician, and a sound that has you wondering if there is anything else in your record collection like it.

Alex the Great brings together a far-reaching scale of musical styles – from catchy, guitar-driven tunes to their slowed down, Dylanesque folk songs, it is hard to ignore the cohesive-yet-varied set lists and true dedication that are obvious in each of the band’s performances. While the crowd dances along, each musician brings a sense of individuality to every song, creating a sound that is truly unique.
Their music is for everyone, from anywhere.

The band was formed by Steven Voges, Vlad Matveikov, Juan Johansson and Hamid Mashali. They came together in East London in 2010, but their history doesn’t begin there. Though the guys have such diverse citizenships as Dutch-Caribbean, Czech-Argentine, Danish-Brazillian and Columbian-Persian, they all met and became friends while attending high school in Madrid. Needless to say they have an international reach.

Now based in Brighton, Alex the Great released their EP entitled ´The Saint´ in January 2012. The EP was recorded and mixed by Alex the Great at Strongroom Studios, as well as in the band’s home studio, and later mastered at the great Abbey Road Studios.
Featuring several guest musicians on instruments ranging from cello to flute to piano to slide guitars, the EP allowed the band to go in a new direction and fully round out their sound.

Having played at venues such as Cargo, the Barfly and the Enterprise in London, as well as De Roots in The Hague and The Painted Lady during Toronto’s Canadian Music Fest 2011, Alex the Great is ready to bring their sound to a wider audience.
