"Bloging about Alfaress"

Surfing YouTube a few weeks ago I came across Alfaress. He's a Moroccan-born rapper now based in the States. Check out a more complete bio here on his site. Because he raps in Moroccan darija, his songs sound nothing like the hip hop music coming out of Palestine, Lebanon, or Egypt. Even for most native speakers of Arabic, the Moroccan dialect is difficult to understand, therefore making some of his texts inaccessible. At the same time, however, you can appreciate his flow and the sound patterns and rhymes unique to darija. My favorite elements are the strings of consonants that you don't find in other dialects of Arabic, let alone English, like mzen and bzef.

Alfaress is currently working on his debut album, Ana Ntouma Hia ("You, Me and Her") but has a few tracks out now, including two videos on youtube. His myspace page has three mp3s up, including a recent song made in response to Israel's attacks on Gaza, "Koulna Ma3k Ghazza." ("We're all with you Gaza")

Here are the two videos up on the internet. "Ana Almaghribi" is by far the most listened to on his myspace page. "Gharib" is the other single. Both videos were shot in the States. Like many other independent rappers producing Arabic-language tracks, Alfaress has been able to use the internet to get his music out there to anyone looking to listen.

Abderrahim Dahr aka Alfaress was born in Rabat, Morocco on August 28, 1979. He entered the world of hip-hop at the young age of 12 years old. He speaks fluent french, Arabic and English and has created a unique style of rap that cannot be imitated.

..Alfaress came to the US to connect the entire world to the Arab and African world through his music. His rapping and singing

Arabic make the world understand another point of view. Living in the US and realizing the reality of both worlds gives me insight

into how both worlds can coincide with one another. My music is diverse and universal. My message is clear to all my listeners.

I was inspired to write Me, You and her because of my experiences. My insight into many subjects provided me the inspiration to

write lyrics that expressed my most inner feelings and I needed to share those experiences through this album. This album

represents my life in both worlds. Youth in my country have benefited from my music and the Muslim community here in the states

can benefit as well.

I have received international recognition from TV, media and radio. My songs have topped the charts at number 1 for 8 consecutive

weeks in Morocco and my interviews and videos have been viewed more than 1000,000 times on MySpace, YouTube, Facebook and many

other websites.
