Alfonso Espriella was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1978. The son of two musicians, he engaged in music from a very early age; singing at 5, playing the piano at 9, the guitar and drums at 13 and writing original songs at the same age. Throughout his early and late adolescence in Colombia, he lead different bands and projects, in which he played the roles of composer, arranger, singer, instrumentalist and even manager. One of his bands performed at the famous “Rock al Parque” festival in Colombia, in front of 15,000 people.
After finishing high-school Alfonso moved to New York were he spent a year playing shows and recording with a band in which he sang, furthering his studies of piano, drums and voice, and attending Columbia University for general ed. classes. He moved to Boston in 1997 and enrolled at the BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC, place from which he graduated with a degree in Music Therapy.
After Berklee, Alfonso decided to try the west coast of the US, and moved to San Diego, CA. He worked providing therapeutic services with music, at different hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, special ed. schools and recovery centers. At the same time he continued to be very active with his music writing, performing and recording. He has played many shows in different parts of southern California, both as a solo act, and with his full band. In 2006 Alfonso WON SECOND PLACE at the Sprint Battle of the Bands held in LA, and got to perform for packed audiences at The House of Blues and The Avalon (previously “The Palace”) opening for famous Latin-American acts such as Los Amigos Invisibles and El Gran Silencio.
As 2006 comes to an end, Alfonso is completing the production of his first full-length album “Trazos de Ser”, which will be ready sometime in December. The album, which features 12 original compositions, has been produced by Alfonso and recorded/mixed by Alan Sanderson (Rolling Stones, Elton John, Fiona Apple, Weezer, Elvis Costello..) at Strate Sound studios in San Diego.
